Transitar El Parpadeo: Seis Poetas EspañolesCanteli Vigón, Marcos 21 April 2008 (has links)
To traverse the blinking, Transitar el parpadeo, is to consider six poetries that seem invisible or at least blurred in current Spanish poetic contexts: José-Miguel Ullán, Carlos Piera, Pedro Provencio, Ildefonso Rodríguez, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado. All of these poets start writing in a period strongly marked by the endings of francoism, and the beginnings of the democracy. The blinking refers to their apparitions and disappearances in general panoramas of Spanish poetry, but it also refers to something that bothers the eyes of most Spanish critics: their criticism is only able to see generations, replacements, and poetic hegemonies. To traverse the blinking is, thus, a question about the reason that their vision is so obstructed, and, at the same time, an attempt to really see these poets, which implies finding a new way of reading them. Since these poetics resist any form of closure, and, at the same time, they offer themselves as an invitation to mobility; we need to find theoretical approaches to reading that do not betray those resistances and preserve the trace of that traversing. This is why I have chosen to organize my dissertation in six chapters, each of them dealing with a poet, and I have concluded without properly or formally closing, but formulating some premises on how to keep crossing through those poetic visions. My conclusion is that categories such as strangeness, the foreign, exodus, and the border, would necessarily need to be acknowledged in order to start to make visible the foundations of these writings. I maintain that they reveal a tradition, long repressed during francoism and also during the first stages of a democratic transition based in a pact of forgetting, a tradition that these poets claim as theirs and which considers the avant-garde as a lineage that, not only cannot be waived, but should be reconsidered. Traversing them, thus, offers new insights on theoretical issues such as subjectivity, poetry's relation to thought, its formal limits, and the question about reality, while believing that language, by retaining its restlessness, continues to offer itself as a powerful tool of resistance and memory. / Dissertation

Instrucci ᵴica (1587) by Diego Garc?de Palacio: an early nautical handbook from MexicoLaanela, Erika Elizabeth 15 May 2009 (has links)
In 1587, an ambitious colonial bureaucrat in Mexico City published a handbook
titled Instrucción náutica. Although navigational books were common throughout the
16th century, the Instrucción náutica was the first printed volume that included an
extensive discussion of ship construction and design, and its publication was thus a
significant event in the history of early modern nautical technology. While the work is
frequently cited in discussions of 16th-century Spanish ship construction and seafaring,
little in-depth analysis of the text has been undertaken to verify its accuracy. In order to
understand the significance of the book, a critical evaluation was undertaken of its
context and content and of the motivations and background of its author.
Analysis of documents written by, about, and to Diego García de Palacio reveals
that he held positions of academic, religious, and political power in New Spain, that his
motives for publishing the book were complex, and that he consulted a range of
disparate sources. Significantly, archival correspondence suggests that García de
Palacio was an observer and administrator of navigation and ship construction, rather
than an expert practitioner. Nonetheless, comparison of the technical content of the book with other sources
of information for 16th-century ships and seafaring, including contemporary treatises,
iconography, and archaeological materials confirms the overall accuracy of the text. The
navigational materials included in the Instrucción náutica reflect information adapted
from existing texts, providing a solid overview of the most common techniques of
navigation in use at the time. While useful, García de Palacio’s discussion of ship
design was clearly intended for a non-specialist audience. Perhaps the most original
technical contributions are his descriptions of the rigging of Spanish ships. The brief
discussion of naval strategy is historically significant due to its juxtaposition between the
last of the great naval battles fought primarily with boarding tactics, and the movement
toward increasing reliance on the broadside.
By comparing García de Palacio’s text to other sources of information, this study
has confirmed the reputation of the Instrucción náutica as one of the most
comprehensive and accurate written descriptions of 16th-century Spanish seafaring
practices.

The Influence of Weight Concerns and Weight Control Expectancies in the Smoking Behavior of Spanish AdolescentsBerrios-Hernandez, Mayra 2011 May 1900 (has links)
The main goal of this study is to examine the relationship between weight control expectancies, weight concerns, smoking rate and perceived likelihood of smoking in the future among Spanish adolescents. Specifically, I intend to explore the potential moderator role of weight concerns on the relationship between weight control expectancies and smoking rate, as well as between weight concern and perceived likelihood of smoking in the future. Additionally, I want to investigate the possible meditational role of weight control expectancies on the relationship between weight concerns and smoking rate and likelihood of smoking in the future, respectively.
The participants were 311 Spanish adolescents (M = 15.20; SD = 1.63; 174 female and 137 male) from schools in Alicante, Spain. The students completed questionnaires regarding smoking history and status. They also responded to questions regarding smoking expectancies and weigh concerns. Results suggested differences between smokers and nonsmokers in weight control expectancies and fear of fatness regardless of gender. The moderator model of weight concerns was not supported by findings.
The results prove the meditational role of weight control expectancies on the relationship between fear of fatness and smoking rate, as well as between fear of fatness and perceived likelihood of smoking in the future. Implications, directions for future research and limitations of the study are discussed.

From sword to seal : the ascent of the Carvajal family in Spain (1391-1516)Martínez, Roger Louis 24 September 2012 (has links)
This dissertation examines the Carvajal family’s century-long transformation from less prestigious knights (caballeros) into influential church leaders and royal advisors to the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabel. During the 15th century, the Carvajal family successfully utilized the tools of family confederations, occupational patronage, religious endowments, and wealth generation in their pursuit of enhanced status in Castile. Additionally, this work documents a family confederation formed by the Carvajals and the Santa Marías, an influential clan of Jewish converts to Christianity (conversos). The geographic focus of this study is the city and diocese of Plasencia, Spain, and the timeframe is from 1391 to 1516. The key Plasencia families examined in this project are the allied Carvajals and Santa Marías, as well as their rivals, the Estúñigas. Research for this dissertation explored fourteen city, cathedral, provincial, royal, and national archives and libraries across Spain. This pioneering archival history breaks new ground in its exploration of the familial, economic, occupational, and social processes that facilitated the rise of the Carvajals of Plasencia. / text

Marriage, gender, and the politics of "unity" in Visigothic SpainDickenson, Elizabeth Gayle 23 April 2013 (has links)
This dissertation’s thesis is that the marital rhetoric and gendered imagery of late classical, Christian political discourse appear in narrative, conciliar, and legal texts produced in Visigothic Spain between 579 and 654 A.D. for the purpose of expressing conflict, rather than “unity.” This thesis opposes views of the Visigothic kingdom as a model of successful Christian unification by showing how the male-authored, Spanish sources - far from being silent on religio-political conflicts - use marriage, women, and wealth as metaphors in disputes over orthodoxy and status. These early medieval texts suggest a new paradigm of Christian “unity” in which Jews function as the “enemy,” and in so doing, establish a political model decidedly different from that of late antiquity. Examples of this political model appear in the Third and Fourth Councils of Toledo (589 and 633 A.D.), which are published here for the first time in Latin-English translation. Despite the historical significance of the Visigothic sources in the Spanish and broader contexts, little attention has been paid to late classical marital rhetoric and gendered imagery in them as evidence of conflicts. Understanding the purpose of these rhetorical strategies helps us to perceive how the paradigm of Christian “unity” masked deep conflicts over status, orthodoxy, and wealth - conflicts that persisted until a new invading force appeared to challenge Visigothic power in 711 A.D. / text
