Simulated Shrub Encroachment Impacts Function of Arctic Spider Communities

The projected increase of shrubs across the Arctic is expected to alter patterns of snow cover, which may affect the phenology and survival of arthropods such as spiders. In this study, we simulated shrub encroachment on a series of tundra plots and examined the effects on the spider assemblages during the following growing season. Our simulated shrub treatment did not affect the abundance or composition of spider communities over the season; however, adults from the dominant genus Pardosa (Lycosidae) had significantly higher body mass on treatment plots. This difference in mass was observed following snow melt and persisted until halfway through the growing season. Given the importance of spiders as arthropod predators and as food sources for breeding birds, such a change in summer body mass could represent a shift in spiders’ functional contributions to Arctic ecosystems.

Factors Influencing Web Tenure in a Tropical Spider and Comparison between Forest and Non-forest Habitats

Webs are fundamental to the ecology of Nephila clavipes, the golden orb-weaver spider, because they serve as sites for prey capture, reproduction, competition, predation, and parasitism. In addition to the presence of the female N. clavipes, males and kleptoparasites reside on the web in varying numbers. Webs are also found in clusters with conspecific females. Web site selection and length of web tenure is a behavioral decision vital to the spider’s fitness and the ecology of her species. I conducted a field census to quantify these factors and analyze their influence on web tenure, compare web ecology between a forest and non-forest habitat, as well as explain the significance of N. clavipes’ web as central to many interactions. Web tenure, as well, was influenced differently by the factors between both environments. In the forest habitat, increase in prey capture rate decreased web tenure and inclusion in cluster increased web tenure. In the non-forest habitat, only increase in spider size was related to increased web tenure. There were significant differences between the two habitats in the sizes of the female spider and quantity of males and kleptoparasites. Results also showed that spider size influenced quantity of males and web diameter influenced quantity of kleptoparasites. Explanation of these results can be attributed to the complex relationships among the variables and the consequences of living in habitats impacted by human occupation.

Studies involving potential chemical attractants from Rudbeckia hirta inflorescences

Our research involves the isolation and identification of the possible chemical compounds in black-eyed Susans that may be responsible for the olfactory attraction of the crab spider Misumenoides formosipes to the inflorescences of these plants. In olfactometric bioassays, 80% of 30 male spiders moved towards olfactory-only cues from R. hirta inflorescences over a water control (P = 0.0014). The bulk extract was separated using flash column chromatography (silica column) with a series of solvents. Spiders in olfactometer bioassays showed a significant preference for the fractions collected using 100% dichloromethane over the solvent-only control (P=0.039). The 100% dichloromethane pooled fractions were separated using solid phase extraction (SPE). Three compounds were isolated and identified using TLC, infrared and NMR spectroscopy. Two compounds were identified as contaminants, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and erucamide, found in the flash column chromatography apparatus and SPE apparatus, respectively. A long-chain crystalline hydrocarbon wax was extracted from R. hirta inflorescences. Research shows that several insects use the lipids of the wax layer, specifically various long-chain alkanes and alcohols, as cues in host plant selection or as kairomones, chemical cues used in communication from one organism to another [3]. It also shows that the waxes can act as absorbents or release agents for biologically active material. Spider (Araneae) assemblages in the Carmanah Valley on Vancouver Island : composition, habitat preferences, and phenology.

Spiders of the Carmanah Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia were examined to determine differences in species assemblages in a regenerating clearcut and an ancient forest, and characterize life histories of the different species. Twenty-three families (113 species, 76 genera) were collected using Malaise traps. Diversity was greater in the regenerating clear-cut than in the ancient forest. The latter was dominated by the web-building guild. Assemblages in the two habitats were significantly different and species that preferred the regenerating forest tended toward spring/summer stenochronous life histories compared to fall stenochronous in the ancient forest. Eight species showed non-random distribution patterns relative to the riparian corridor formed by Carmanah Creek. Species that used both habitats did not show a shift in timing of reproduction despite differences in abiotic conditions. More adults were collected in the ancient forest habitat than in the regenerating clear-cut, while more immatures were found in the regenerating clear-cut.

New Insights into the Evolutionary Mantenance of Male Mate Choice Behaviour using the Western Black Widow Spider, Latrodectus hesperus

Mate choice among males is relatively understudied, despite recent evidence supporting its ubiquity. Theory predicts male mate choice in response to variation in female quality, and male mating strategies that limit polygyny. However empirical research investigating these connections, particularly under natural conditions, is generally lacking. Using the Western black widow spider, Latrodectus hesperus, I investigated male mate choice, male investment, and the advantage of mating with females that differ in their potential to deliver fitness benefits to males via higher fecundity and/or reduced risk of sperm competition. Males were found to be preferentially attracted to larger, high-diet virgin females over females that were smaller due to a lower diet, or having been previously mated, or both. Through a three-year field study on females I found that males likely benefit from selectivity, as smaller, low-diet females often failed to deposit any egg sacs throughout the breeding season, likely due to their shortened web-site tenure and/or lack of bodily resources. I investigated the costs and benefits to male genital breakage in L. hesperus, a strategy typically assumed to result in male sterility while providing paternity protection. I found that genital mutilation in L. hesperus did not cause sterility and that males were capable of inseminating multiple females, likely because of the comparatively low amount of genital damage and the likelihood of the efficient placement of genital fragments. Evidence from double mating trials supported the efficacy of broken genital fragments as plugs, but first male sperm precedence was often maintained in cases where male genital breakage failed or fragments were positioned incorrectly, which occurred frequently. Together, these laboratory and field experiments contribute to a more complete view of mate choice.

The effects of stream productivity on aquatic-terrestrial linkages

The potential relationship between riparian arachnids and aquatic insect productivity was assessed in forest streams throughout the central South Island of New Zealand. Initially, a survey was conducted of thirty seven, first-third order forest streams. Streams were selected to represent a range of benthic invertebrate standing crops (as a surrogate measure of "productivity") from Banks Peninsula streams with relatively high benthic invertebrate densities to acid mine drainage streams near Reefton that were almost devoid of aquatic life. At each site benthic invertebrate densities and biomass were measured in riffle habitats and adjacent gravel bars were sampled for terrestrial invertebrates. At a sub-set of 16 sites, a 20 metre longitudinal web-building spider survey was conducted along each bank of the stream. As an additional component, a 20 metre transect starting at the stream margin and running perpendicularly into the forest was used to survey the density of web-building spiders with increasing distance from the stream. Results from the survey of in-situ stream insect biomass and gravel bar invertebrates showed a strong relationship between aquatic insect biomass and the biomass of riparian arachnids (R2 = 0.42, P < 0.001) having accounted for potentially confounding factors such as stream size, elevation, substrate and disturbance. The 20 metre longitudinal survey showed that streams with the highest in-situ insect biomass had significantly higher densities of web-building spiders along their banks (R2 = 0.28, P < 0.05), having accounted for potential confounding variables of elevation, habitat architecture and stream and channel width. The stream to forest survey showed a strong exponential decay in web-building spider densities with increasing distance from the stream (R2 = 0.96, P < 0.0001). Regardless of stream productivity web-building spiders were most abundant at the stream margins and rapidly declined to very low densities 20 metres from the stream. In order to further test the relationship between riparian web-building spider densities and stream insect productivity, a stream fertilization experiment was conducted on six first-second order streams in the Maimai experimental catchment, Reefton. Three streams were enriched by the addition of a fertiliser solution mainly consisting of sodium nitrate for seven months, and the other three streams were used as controls. Water chemistry, benthic invertebrate communities, emerging aquatic adults, and the densities of web-building spiders along the stream corridor and in the forest were monitored in three seasons (spring, summer and autumn) over the course of the nutrient-addition. By the end of the experiment, conductivity was significantly higher in nutrient-addition streams than in the control streams (F = 80.5, P < 0.001), but chlorophyll concentrations showed no significant differences between treatments. Both benthic mayfly densities (F = 6.15, P < 0.05) and the biomass of adult aquatic dipterans (Chironomidae, Simuliidae) (F = 9.25, P < 0.01) were significantly higher in nutrient-addition streams in the last sampling round. Spiders recorded from intercept traps indicated that by the end of the experiment spider activity was significantly higher within 2.5 metres of the nutrient-addition streams (F = 5.70, P < 0.01). However, seasonal densities of web-building spiders along the stream margin and in the forest decreased with no significant differences observed between nutrient-addition and control streams. The results from these studies indicate that adult insects emerging from streams represent an important source of prey that could influence the biomass and abundance of riparian arachnids. Additionally, the results imply that stream productivity and size could mediate the strength of the interaction between riparian and stream habitats. Moreover, feedback mechanisms present in both systems could have implications for such interactions. The elevated densities of web-building spiders observed at the stream margin led to the proposal of the "Highway Robber" hypothesis. This hypothesis suggests that such higher densities of spiders are the result of increased insect activity along the stream corridor: the emergence of adult aquatic insects was predicted to vary less over temporal and spatial scales than that of terrestrial insects due to the poorly synchronized life histories in many New Zealand stream insects. I conclude by suggesting that there are numerous anthropocentric perturbations such as loss of heterogeneity, introduced species, pollution and habitat degradation that could undermine and decouple the intimate linkages between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
