Spin waves in curved magnetic shells

Körber, Lukas 29 August 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to theoretically explore the geometrical effects on spin waves, the fundamental low-energy excitations of ferromagnets, propagating in curved magnetic shells. Supported by an efficient numerical technique developed for this thesis, several aspects of curvilinear spin-wave dynamics involving magnetic pseudo-charges, the topology of curved magnets, symmetry-breaking effects, and dynamics of spin textures are studied. In recent years, geometrical and curvature effects on mesoscale ferromagnets have attracted the attention of fundamental and applied research. Exciting curvature-induced phenomena include chiral symmetry breaking, the stabilization of magnetic skyrmions on Gaussian bumps, or topologically induced domain walls in Möbius ribbons. Spin waves in vortex-state magnetic nanotubes exhibit a curvature-induced dispersion asymmetry due to geometric contributions to the magnetic volume pseudo-charges. However, previous theoretical studies were limited to simple and thin curved shells due to the complexity of analytical models and the time-consuming nature of existing numerical techniques. For a systematic study of spin-wave propagation in curved shells, the first of five thematic parts of this thesis deals with developing a numerical method to calculate spin-wave spectra in waveguides with arbitrarily shaped cross-sections efficiently. For this, a finite-element/boundary-element method to calculate dynamic dipolar fields, the Fredkin-Koehler method, was extended for propagating waves. The technique is implemented in the micromagnetic modeling package TetraX developed and made available as open source to the scientific community. Equipped with this method, the second part of the thesis studies the influence of geometric contributions to the magnetic charges leading to nonlocal chiral symmetry breaking. Introducing the toroidal moment to spin-wave dynamics allows us to predict whether this symmetry breaking is present even in complicated systems with spatially inhomogeneous equilibria or shells with gradient curvatures. The theoretical study of curvilinear magnetism is extended to thick shells, uncovering a curvature-induced nonreciprocity in the spatial mode profiles of the spin waves. Consequently, nonreciprocal dipole-dipole hybridization between different modes leads to asymmetric level gaps enabling spin-wave diode behavior. Besides unidirectional transport, curvature modifies the weakly nonlinear spin-wave interactions. The third part of this thesis focuses on topological effects. A topological Berry phase of spin waves in helical-state nanotubes is studied and connected to a local curvature-induced chiral interaction of exchange origin. The topology of more complicated systems, such as magnetic Möbius ribbons, is shown to impose selection rules on the spectrum of possible spin waves and split it into modes with half and full-integer indices. To understand the effects of achiral symmetry breaking, the fourth part of this thesis focuses on the deformation of symmetric shells, here, cylindrical nanotubes, to polygonal and elliptical shapes. Lowering rotational symmetry leads to splitting spin-wave dispersions into singlet and doublets branches, which is explained using a simple group theory approach and is analogous to the electron band structure in crystals. Apart from mode splitting, this symmetry breaking allows hybridization between different spin-wave modes and modifies their microwave absorption. While this hybridization appears discretely in polygonal tubes, tuning the eccentricity of elliptical tubes allows controlling the level gaps appearing from hybridization. Finally, the last part focuses on the dynamics of spin waves in the vicinity of spin textures in curvilinear systems. The dynamics of topological meron strings are shown to exhibit dipole-induced chiral symmetry breaking like spin waves in curved shells. Moreover, modulational instability is predicted from the softening of their gyrotropic modes, similar to the formation of stripe domains in flat systems. This stripe domain formation can also be observed in curved shells but leads to tilted or helix domains. Overall, this thesis contributes to the fundamental understanding of spin-wave dynamics on the mesoscale but also advertises these for possible magnonic applications.:Abstract Acknowledgements Contents 1 Introduction Theoretical Foundations 2 Micromagnetic continuum theory 3 Spin waves Numerical methods in micromagnetism 4 Overview 5 Finite-element dynamic-matrix method for propagating spin waves 6 Numerical reverse-engineering of spin-wave dispersions 7 TetraX: A micromagnetic modeling package Aspects of curvilinear magnetization dynamics 8 Magnetic charges 9 Topology 10 Achiral symmetry breaking 11 Spin textures Closing remarks 12 Summary and outlook 13 Publications and conference contributions Appendix A Extended derivations and proofs B Supplementary data and discussion List of Figures List of Tables Bibliography Alphabetical Index / Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die geometrischen Effekte auf Spinwellen (Magnonen), die fundamentalen niederenergetischen Anregungen von Ferromagneten, die sich in gekrümmten magnetischen Schalen ausbreiten, theoretisch zu untersuchen. Insgesamt trägt diese Arbeit zum grundlegenden Verständnis der Spinnwellen-Dynamik auf der Mesoskala bei, aber diskutiert auch mögliche magnonische Anwendungen.:Abstract Acknowledgements Contents 1 Introduction Theoretical Foundations 2 Micromagnetic continuum theory 3 Spin waves Numerical methods in micromagnetism 4 Overview 5 Finite-element dynamic-matrix method for propagating spin waves 6 Numerical reverse-engineering of spin-wave dispersions 7 TetraX: A micromagnetic modeling package Aspects of curvilinear magnetization dynamics 8 Magnetic charges 9 Topology 10 Achiral symmetry breaking 11 Spin textures Closing remarks 12 Summary and outlook 13 Publications and conference contributions Appendix A Extended derivations and proofs B Supplementary data and discussion List of Figures List of Tables Bibliography Alphabetical Index

Microwave Frequency Stability and Spin Wave Mode Structure in Nano-Contact Spin Torque Oscillators

Eklund, Anders January 2016 (has links)
The nano-contact spin torque oscillator (NC-STO) is an emerging device for highly tunable microwave frequency generation in the range from 0.1 GHz to above 65 GHz with an on-chip footprint on the scale of a few μm. The frequency is inherent to the magnetic material of the NC-STO and is excited by an electrical DC current by means of the spin torque transfer effect. Although the general operation is well understood, more detailed aspects such as a generally nonlinear frequency versus current relationship, mode-jumping and high device-to-device variability represent open questions. Further application-oriented questions are related to increasing the electrical output power through synchronization of multiple NC-STOs and integration with CMOS integrated circuits. This thesis consists of an experimental part and a simulation part. Experimentally, for the frequency stability it is found that the slow but strong 1/f-type frequency fluctuations are related to the degree of nonlinearity and the presence of perturbing, unexcited modes. It is also found that the NC-STO can exhibit up to three propagating spin wave oscillation modes with different frequencies and can randomly jump between them. These findings were made possible through the development of a specialized microwave time-domain measurement circuit. Another instrumental achievement was made with synchrotron X-rays, where we image dynamically the magnetic internals of an operating NC-STO device and reveal a spin wave mode structure with a complexity significantly higher than the one predicted by the present theory. In the simulations, we are able to reproduce the nonlinear current dependence by including spin wave-reflecting barriers in the nm-thick metallic, magnetic free layer. A physical model for the barriers is introduced in the form of metal grain boundaries with reduced magnetic exchange coupling. Using the experimentally measured average grain size of 30 nm, the spin wave mode structure resulting from the grain model is able to reproduce the experimentally found device nonlinearity and high device-to-device variability. In conclusion, the results point out microscopic material grains in the metallic free layer as the reason behind the nonlinear frequency versus current behavior and multiple propagating spin wave modes and thereby as a source of device-to-device variability and frequency instability. / <p>QC 20160620</p>

Vortex statics and dynamics in anisotropic and/or magnetic superconductors.

Bespalov, Anton 29 September 2014 (has links)
Recently, the studies of the properties of Abrikosov vortices in strongly anisotropicand magnetic media have been stimulated by the discovery of the iron-based andferromagnetic superconductors. In this thesis an analysis of vortex statics anddynamics in such systems has been carried out. Firstly, the problem of vortex pinningon a small defect has been considered. Within the Ginzburg-Landau theory thepinning potential for a cavity in the form of an elliptical cylinder has been derived.Secondly, the flux-flow conductivity of an anisotropic superconductor has beenanalyzed in detail within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory.A significant part of the thesis is devoted to the study of interplay between spinwaves (magnons) and vortices in ferromagnetic superconductors. We havedemonstrated that the magnon spectrum acquires a Bloch-like band structure in thepresence of an ideal vortex lattice. Using the phenomenological London and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations, we studied the ac and dc responses of vortices inferromagnetic superconductors. Finally, we investigated the vortex state insuperconductor-ferromagnet (FS) hybrid structures (e. g., FS superlattices) withstrong spatial dispersion of the magnetic susceptibility. In such systems thesuperconducting electrodynamics may be strongly nonlocal, which leads to theattraction of vortices and to a first order phase transition at the lower critical field.

Bailleul, Matthieu 28 October 2002 (has links) (PDF)

Magnetization Dynamics in Nano-Contact Spin Torque Oscillators : Solitonic bullets and propagating spin waves

Bonetti, Stefano January 2010 (has links)
Magnetization dynamics in nano-contact spin torque oscillators (STOs) is investigated from an experimental and theoretical point of view. The fundamentals of magnetization dynamics due to spin transfer torque are given. A custom-made high frequency (up to 46 GHz) in large magnetic fields (up to 2.2 T) microwave characterization setup has been built for the purpose and described in this thesis. A unique feature of this setup is the capability of applying magnetic fields at any direction θe out of the sample plane, and with high precision. This is particularly important, because the (average) out-of-plane angle of the STO free magnetic layer has fundamental impact on spin wave generation and STO operation. By observing the spin wave spectral emission as a function of θe, we find that at angles θe below a certain critical angle θcr, two distinct spin wave modes can be excited: a propagating mode, and a localized mode of solitonic character (so called spin wave bullet). The experimental frequency, current threshold and frequency tuneability with current of the two modes can be described qualitatively by analytical models and quantitatively by numerical simulations. We are also able to understand the importance, so far underestimated, of the Oersted field in the dynamics of nano-contact STOs. In particular, we show that the Oersted field strongly affects the current tuneability of the propagating mode at subcritical angles, and it is also the fundamental cause of the mode hopping observed in the time-domain. This mode hopping has been observed both experimentally using a state-of-the-art real-time oscilloscope and corroborated by micromagnetic simulations. Micromagnetic simulations also reveal details of the spatial distribution of the spin wave excitations. By investigating the emitted power as a function of θe, we observed two characteristic behaviors for the two spin wave modes: a monotonic increase of the power for increasing out-of-plane angles in the case of the propagating mode; an increase towards a maximum power followed by a drop of it at the critical angle for the localized mode. Both behaviors are reproduced by micromagnetic simulations. The agreement with the simulations offers also a way to better understand the precession dynamics, since the emitted power is strongly connected to the angular variation of the giant magnetoresistance signal. We also find that the injection locking of spin wave modes with a microwave source has a strong dependence on θe, and reaches a maximum locking strength at perpendicular angles. We are able to describe these results in the theoretical framework of non-linear spin wave dynamics. / QC 20101130

Magnetic vortex dynamics nanostructures

Pigeau, Benjamin 17 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is aimed at studying experimentally the magnetisationdynamics of discs in the sub-micron range made of low dampingferromagnetic materials. For this purpose, an extremely sensitivetechnique has been used: the ferromagnetic resonance force microscopy. A firstpart is devoted to the measurement of the eigenmodes of NiMnSb discstaken in their remanent state: a vortex. The influence of aperpendicular magnetic field on the spin wave modes in the vortex state willbe detailled. Then, the coupling mechanism between the vortex core andthese spin wave, eventually leading to its dynamical reversal, ishighlighted. A theoretical framework of the vortex state is presented, allowing to model the experimental observations. In a second part, the problem of the collective magnetisation dynamics in several FeVdiscs is addressed. Measurements of the collective modes coupled bythe dynamical dipolar interaction are presented, associated with atheoretical modelisation which explain quantitatively the experimentalresults.

Spin Waves: The Transition from a Thin Film to a Full Magnonic Crystal

Langer, Manuel 23 October 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The present work addresses in-depth magnetic films with magnonic surface patterning of variable size. Two different kinds of such structures referred to as surface-modulated magnonic crystals were investigated: Ion-irradiated magnonic crystals and structurally etched magnonic crystals. To achieve that, two different experimental approaches were pursued. On the one hand, the magnetic moment at the surface of lithographically patterned permalloy (Ni80Fe20) films was periodically reduced by means of ion irradiation. On the other hand, structural trenches were introduced at the surface of a pre-patterned thin film by sequential ion milling. The goal is the acquisition of a fundamental understanding of the behavior of spin-wave modes in the transition from a continuous magnetic thin film to a full magnonic crystal, i.e. separated periodic magnetic structures. In the framework of this thesis, the spin-wave eigen-modes of such magnonic crystals were mainly investigated spectroscopically by means of ferromagnetic resonance. Thereby, the “Two-magnon scattering perturbation theory” and the “plane-wave method” were employed as the theoretical methodologies to understand the complex dynamics of such systems. The first is a reliable method to calculate the dynamic response of surface-modulated magnonic crystals where the modulation is of a perturbation character, i.e. small compared to the film thickness. The latter is a quasi-analytical approach to calculate the dynamic eigen-modes of magnonic crystals consisting of different components with significantly varying properties. Moreover, numerical methods were employed to get further insight into the spin dynamics of these structures. In such systems, the spin-wave behavior follows the well-known dispersion relation of flat magnetic thin films as long as the surface-modulation is small compared to the film thickness. In this work, it was shown that this circumstance can be exploited for a parameter-free determination of the exchange constant A, which is not experimentally accessible for magnetic thin films in a straightforward manner. However, once the modulation height is of significant magnitude, the dynamics of surface-modulated magnonic crystals become substantially more complex. A straightforward understanding of such kind of system is hampered by the complex interplay of different effects. On the one hand, the internal demagnetizing field reveals an alternating character and depends itself on the modulation height and the field angle. On the other hand, the dynamic eigen-modes are hybridized, i.e., they reveal different characteristics in different regions of the magnonic crystal and, in addition, they couple to each other. Here, the approach is particularly favorable to investigate the spin dynamics of surface-modulated magnonic crystals by systematically altering the modulation height of the same sample. This is mainly due to two reasons. First, the two edge cases, namely the thin film and the full magnonic crystal, are already well understood and, second, other magnetic and structural parameters remain constant. With the help of the measurement results and the simulations, the quasi-analytical theory was validated. Subsequently, the mode profiles were calculated by theory and simulation in order to analyze the mode character in the transition from a thin film to a full magnonic crystal. Two kinds of dynamic eigen-modes were identified, namely hybridized modes and localized modes. For both types, simple formulae were derived describing their characteristic dynamic behavior. Besides, transition rules were found connecting the mode number n of film modes with the mode number m of modes in the full magnonic crystal. In order to correlate the symmetry and magnitude of the demagnetizing field with the spin-wave eigen-modes, the internal fields of a strongly surface-modulated magnonic crystal were reconstructed by electron holography measurements. By reemploying the measurement results for micromagnetic simulations, the dynamics of the whole system could be reproduced. This strategy allowed for a better understanding of the link between the demagnetizing field and the spin-wave mode characteristics. Based on these results, a simplified model for the analytical description of the inplane angular dependence was found. The acquired understanding of such systems led to the elaboration of specific applications, such as the spin-wave channelization. It should be noted that the coupling of uniform to non-uniform spin-wave phenomena, which is an intrinsic property of these structures, holds out the prospect of several applications in the future.
