Automatic Pose and Position Estimation by Using Spiral Codes

Albayrak, Aras January 2014 (has links)
This master thesis is about providing the implementation of synthesis, detection of spiral symbols and estimating the pan/tilt angle and position by using camera calibration. The focus is however on the latter, the estimation of parameters of localization. Spiral symbols are used to be able to give an object an identity as well as to locate it. Due to the spiral symbol´s characteristic shape, we can use the generalized structure tensor (GST) algorithm which is particularly efficient to detect different members of the spiral family. Once we detect spirals, we know the position and identity parameters of the spirals within an apriori known geometric configuration (on a sheet of paper). In turn, this information can be used to estimate the 3D-position and orientation of the object on which spirals are attached using a camera calibration method. This thesis provides an insight into how automatic detection of spirals attached on a sheet of paper, and from this, automatic deduction of position and pose parameters of the sheet, can be achieved by using a network camera. GST algorithm has an advantage of running the processes of detection of spirals efficiently w.r.t detection performance and computational resources because it uses a spiral image model well adapted to spiral spatial frequency characteristic. We report results on how detection is affected by zoom parameters of the network camera, as well as by the GST parameters; such as filter size. After all spirals centers are located and identified w.r.t. their twist/bending parameter, a flexible technique for camera calibration, proposed by Zhengyou Zhang implemented in Matlab within the present study, is performed. The performance of the position and pose estimation in 3D is reported. The main conclusion is, we have reasonable surface angle estimations for images which were taken by a WLAN network camera in different conditions such as different illumination and different distances.

THE USE OF FACEBOOK IN THE EGYPTIAN JANUARY 25TH REVOLUTION: THE SPIRAL OF VOICE PROCESS

Al-Emad, Mohammed Abdulrahman 01 August 2015 (has links)
This dissertation was conducted to determine whether Egyptians’ use of Facebook between December 17, 2010 and February 11, 2011 affected their perceptions of majority and minority opinions about President Hosni Mubarak’s government and thus influenced their willingness to express their opinions about that regime, in turn forming a new online public opinion that called for the January 25 revolution. For the purpose of this study, the theoretical framework was the spiral of silence theory. To answer the research questions in this dissertation the researcher used the qualitative approach, combining in-depth interviews with Egyptian Facebook users and qualitative content analysis of their Facebook pages. The results show that as Egyptians used Facebook, they came to believe that others held beliefs about the Mubarak regime similar to their own, they became more hopeful and confident that they could make a difference, and they became more likely to speak out about their opinions. As more voices began to be heard, more voices joined in the chorus of condemnation. These data suggested that the use of Facebook, as a means both of perception and expression, helped facilitate the formation of what can be called a “spiral of voice” among growing numbers of Egyptians. It was concluded that Noelle-Neumann’s spiral of silence may well have been an accurate description of public opinion formation in an age of government-controlled media, but that spiral of voice may be a better descriptor of public opinion formation and action in the age of social media.

The formation of molecular clouds in spiral galaxies

Dobbs, Clare L. January 2007 (has links)
Molecular clouds are imperative to astronomy as the sites of all known star formation. The problem of how molecular clouds are formed in spiral galaxies is approached numerically, by modelling the response of a gas disk to a spiral potential. The importance of spiral shocks is highlighted as a dominant formation mechanism for molecular clouds in grand design galaxies, where a strong density wave is present. The spiral shock both increases the density of the interstellar gas significantly, and produces structure in the spiral arms. The gas evolves into discrete clumps, which are shown to contain substantial densities of molecular hydrogen, and are therefore identified as molecular clouds. The formation of these clouds requires that the interstellar medium (ISM) is cold and inhomogeneous. The passage of an inhomogeneous gas distribution through a spiral potential further shows that supersonic velocities are induced as the gas shocks. This can explain the velocity dispersion relation observed in molecular clouds. Finally, the shearing of clumps of gas in the spiral arms leads to the formation of inter-arm structures, which are commonly observed in spiral galaxies.

Age Dependence of Spiral Grain in White Oaks (Quercus Alba L.) in Southwestern Illinois

Rauchfuss, Julia, Speer, James H. January 2006 (has links)
Dendrochronologists have used the presence of spiral grain as an indicator of old trees for most of the history of the field, although this relationship has been little studied. We examined cross-sections from dead trees and used a 12-mm Haglof Swedish Increment borer to collect cores from living white oak (Quercus alba L.) trees in an Eastern Deciduous Forest stand in southwestern Illinois. Spiral grain is the alignment of wood fibers to the longitudinal axis of trees and is driven by patterns of initial cambial cell division. In this study, we examine environmental factors that may affect spiral grain severity, the usefulness of non-destructive sampling methods (using the 12-mm increment borer), and the relationship between tree age and spiral grain. We tested Brazier’s method (1965) of averaging the spiral grain angle from two radii taken 180 degrees apart (i.e. one diameter in the tree) to get representative grain angles for the whole circumference of a tree at a certain height. The 12-mm increment borer did not produce consistent results in this study; therefore, the collection of cross-sections is advised for the study of spiral grain in white oaks. Brazier’s method should not be used in white oaks and should not be applied universally to all tree species. The severity of spiral grain is expressed in the xylem and may not be expressed in the bark of the tree. Left spiral grain does generally increase in white oaks with age, although this relationship is not always consistent, so a tree without severe spiral grain is not necessarily young.

Submillimeter Array 12CO (2-1) Imaging of the NGC 6946 Giant Molecular Clouds

Wu, Ya-Lin, Sakamoto, Kazushi, Pan, Hsi-An 07 April 2017 (has links)
We present a (CO)-C-12 (2-1) mosaic map of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 by combining data from the Submillimeter Array and the IRAM 30m telescope. We identify 390 giant molecular clouds (GMCs) from the nucleus to 4.5 kpc in the disk. GMCs in the inner 1 kpc are generally more luminous and turbulent, some of which have luminosities > 10(6)K. km. s(-1) pc(2) and velocity dispersions > 10. km s(-1). Large-scale bar-driven dynamics likely regulate GMC properties in the nuclear region. Similar to the MilkyWay and other disk galaxies, GMC mass function of NGC 6946 has a shallower slope (index > -2) in the inner region, and a steeper slope (index < -2) in the outer region. This difference in mass spectra may be indicative of different cloud formation pathways: gravitational instabilities might play a major role in the nuclear region, while cloud coalescence might be dominant in the outer disk. Finally, the NGC 6946 clouds are similar to those inM33 in terms of statistical properties, but they are generally less luminous and turbulent than the M51 clouds.

Experimental Evaluation and Computer Analysis of Multi-Spiral Confinement in Reinforced Concrete Columns

Brubaker, Briana January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Civil Engineering / Asadollah Esmaeily / Bridge and building construction in areas that sustain frequent seismic activity require the use of heavy lateral steel reinforcement within concrete columns to handle the lateral loads. Multi-spiral lateral reinforcement has been recently introduced to the construction field to offer an alternative to the traditional hoop and tie reinforcement. This report evaluates the experimental data observed in multiple experimental studies done on different concrete specimens. These specimens include multiple rectilinear reinforcement and several multi-spiral configurations in both rectangular and oblong columns. Due to multi-spiral reinforcement being a relatively new design, traditional computer programs have yet to include design analysis for this type of reinforcement in computer programs. Dr. Asad Esmaeily developed the program KSU RC 2.0 that can implement multiple analytical models to evaluate different multi-spiral configurations, as well as traditional hoop and tie confinement, that may be compared with experimental data. This report illustrates the comparative data from several different reinforced concrete column models. The data clearly indicates that multi-spiral reinforced columns exhibit higher compressive strength in the axial direction as well as higher ductility capabilities when compared to traditional rectilinear reinforcement of similar lateral steel reinforcement ratios. The use of multi-spiral reinforcement is also shown to lower costs for both the work time needed to install the structures as well as lowering the required steel ratio; all while maintaining the structural integrity of the columns.

Vergleich verschiedener Kontrastmittelkonzentrationen für die Computertomographie des Abdomens / Comparison of different iodine concentrations for multidetector row CT of the upper abdomen

Werner, Alexander January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The effect of different iodine concentrations at either constant injection or iodine administration rates but constant total iodine load on contrast enhancement of liver, pancreas and spleen by multidetector row CT was investigated. 120 consecutive patients (70±6 years) underwent triphasic liver CT at a 4-channel multidetector row CT using the non-ionic contrast medium iopromide. Patients were divided into six equal groups: I:150ml, 240mg/ml@4ml/s; II:120ml, 300mg/ml@4ml/s; III:97.3ml, 370mg/ml@4ml/s; IV:150ml, 240mg/ml@5ml/s; V:120ml, 300mg/ml, 60ml@6ml/s, 60ml@3ml/s; VI:97.3ml, 370mg/ml@3.3ml/s. ROIs were measured in the liver, the pancreas, and the spleen in unenhanced, arterial, portal venous, and equilibrium phase. At a constant injection rate of 4ml/s, pancreatic enhancement over baseline only in the arterial phase was significantly higher at 370mg/ml (58±15HU vs. 59±18HU vs. 74±20HU for group I-III, respectively (p<0.02)). Comparison of different iodine concentrations at constant iodine administration rate (group II, IV, VI) and of all six protocols revealed no significant differences at either phase. At a constant iodine load and constant injection rates, the high-iodinated contrast agent iopromide at 370 mg/ml improves pancreatic enhancement in the arterial phase. At constant iodine load and constant iodine administration rates, there is no significant effect of different iodine concentrations.
