Channel and Noise Variance Estimation for Future 5G Cellular Networks

Iscar Vergara, Jorge 10 November 2016 (has links)
Future fifth generation (5G) cellular networks have to cope with the expected ten-fold increase in mobile data traffic between 2015 and 2021. To achieve this goal, new technologies are being considered, including massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications. Massive MIMO involves the use of large antenna array sizes at the base station, while mmWave communications employ frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz. In this thesis we study the impact of these technologies on the performance of channel estimators. Our results show that the characteristics of the propagation channel at mmWave frequencies improve the channel estimation performance in comparison with current, low frequency-based, cellular networks. Furthermore, we demonstrate the existence of an optimal angular spread of the multipath clusters, which can be used to maximize the capacity of mmWave networks. We also propose efficient noise variance estimators, which can be employed as an input to existing channel estimators.

Optimization of point spread function of a high numerical aperture objective lens : application to high resolution optical imaging and fabrication / Optimisation du spot de focalisation d'un objectif de microscope de grande ouverture numérique : applications à l'imagerie optique à super-résolue et à la nanofabrication

Li, Qinggele 15 December 2014 (has links)
Nowadays, far field optical microscopy is widely used in many fields, for fundamental research and applications. The low cost, simple operation, high flexibility are its main advantages. The key parameter of an optical microscope is the objective lens. This thesis's work focuses mainly on the characterization and optimization of the point spread function (PSF) of a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens (OL) for applications of high resolution imaging and nano-fabrication.In the first part of the thesis, we have systematically investigated the dependency of polarization and intensity distributions of the focusing spot on numerous parameters, such as the phase, the polarization, and the beam mode of incident beam, as well as the refractive index mismatch. Then, we demonstrated theoretically different methods for manipulation of the polarization and intensity distributions of the focusing spot, which can have desired shapes and are useful for different applications. By using a home-made confocal microscope, we have experimentally verified some of the theoretical predictions, for example, vector properties of light beam under a tight focusing condition. In the second part of dissertation work, a new, simple and inexpensive method based on the one-photon absorption mechanism has been demonstrated theoretically and experimentally for 3D sub-micrometer imaging and fabrication applications. The theoretical calculation based on vectorial Debye approximation and taken into account the absorption effect of material shows that it is possible to focus the light tightly and deeply inside the material if the material presents a very low one-photon absorption (LOPA) at the excitation wavelength. We have then demonstrated experimentally that the LOPA microscopy allows to achieve 3D imaging and 3D fabrication with submicrometer resolution, similar to those obtained by two-photon absorption microscopy.

Rotational Strength and Stiffness of Shallowly Embedded Base Connections in Steel Moment Frames

Hanks, Kevin N. 01 October 2016 (has links)
Shallowly embedded column base connections with unreinforced block out concrete are a common method of connecting steel columns to their foundation. There has been little research done to accurately quantify the effects of this block out concrete on the connection strength and rigidity, and therefore there is nothing to aid the practicing engineer in accounting for this in structural analysis. Due to this lack of understanding, engineers have typically ignored the effects of shallow block out concrete in their analysis, presumably leading to a conservative design. Recent research has attempted to fill this gap in understanding. Several methods have been proposed that seek to quantify the effects of shallow block out concrete on a column base connection. Barnwell proposed a model that predicts the strength of a connection. Both Jones and Tryon used numerical modeling to predict the rotational stiffness of the connection. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the validity of these proposed models. A total of 8 test specimens were created at 2/3 scale with varying column sizes, connection details, and embedment depths. The columns were loaded laterally and cyclically at increasing displacements until the connection failed. The results show that the strength model proposed by Barnwell is reasonable and appropriate, and when applied to this series of physical tests produce predictions that have an observed/predicted ratio of between 0.95 to 1.39. The results also show that methods for estimating the rotational stiffness of the connection at the top of the block out concrete, as proposed by Jones and Tryon also produce reasonable values that had observed/predicted ratios of between 0.93 to 1.47. An alternative model for determining a design value for the rotational stiffness of a shallowly embedded column base plate is also proposed. When the embedment depth to column depth ratio is greater than 1.22, the connection is sufficiently rigid and at small deflections (less than 1% story drift) may be accurately modelled with infinite rotational stiffness (a "fixed" connection) at the base of the column.

Model systému UMTS / Model of UMTS System

Srdínko, Milan January 2008 (has links)
Spread Spectrum Communication techniques have been widely used in mobile and wireless communications. They have very beneficial features like antijam and security (noise-like character, pseudorandom codes usage). At first, the features of Spread Spectrum systems are described with emphasis on the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DS-SS) scheme. Main specifications of UMTS system are also introduced. The goal of this thesis was to create the model of a physical layer UMTS suitable for investigation of disturbing signals influences in Matlab Simulink. This model was used to measure how the Bit error rate (BER) is affected by the Processing gain and the Signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, two important charts which describe the relation of Bit error rate versus the Processing gain and the Signal-to-noise ratio have been plotted.

Využití psychoakustického modelu a tranformace typu wavelet packet pro vodoznačení audio signálů / Utilizing psychoacoustic model and Wavelet Packet Transform for purposes of audio signal watermarking

Heitel, Tomáš January 2010 (has links)
This Thesis deals with a method to enforce the intellectual property rights and protect digital media from tampering – Digital Audio Watermarking. The main aim of this work is implement an audio watermarking algorithm. The theoretical part defined basic terms, methods and processes, which are used in this area. The practical part shows a process of embedding the digital signature into a host signal and her backward extraction. The embedding rule used spread spectrum technique and a psychoacoustic model. The implemented psychoacoustic model involves two properties of the human auditory system which are frequency masking and representation the frequency scale on limited bands called critical bands. The model is relatively new and based on the DWPT. In terms of above model is then the digital watermark embedded in the wavelet domain. This algorithm is implemented in technical software MATLAB. One part of this work focuses on robustness tests of the algorithm. Common signal processing modifications are applied to the watermarked audio as follows: Cutting of the audio, re-sampling, lossy compression, filtering, equalization, modulation effects, noise addition. The last part of the thesis presents subjective and objective methods usable in order to judge the influence of watermarking embedding on the quality of audio tracks called transparency.
