Developing professional judgment and decision making expertise in applied sport psychologyMartindale, Amanda Beverley January 2011 (has links)
Establishing and enhancing standards of practice is important in any profession, and particularly so in a new and emerging domain such as sport psychology. Accordingly, this thesis draws on literature from teaching, medicine, and parallel disciplines such as clinical and counselling psychology to propose a Professional Judgment and Decision Making (PJDM) approach to the evaluation, reflective practice, and training of applied sport psychologists. Methods and mechanisms already utilised in these more established professions are considered alongside empirical data, generated from long-term programmes of sport psychology consultancy, as potential means to further enhance the performance of professionals in this developing field. As such, the thesis highlights gaps in current process, proposes an original conceptualisation of practice, and illustrates the possible outcomes and implications of this PJDM approach. In addition, the emergent PJDM principles are illustrated in practice through a reflection-in-action case study, and trained and evaluated in novice applied sport psychology practitioners as a basis for the effective development of PJDM expertise.

An Approach for Standardization of Datalink SystemsBolino, John V., Lenz, Russell W. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / The paper explores the concept of standardization of datalink systems and makes a call for industry involvement in the process of defining an approach to standardization. The objectives are to reduce the Department of Defense (DoD) cost of Major Range and Test Facility Base (MRTFB) operations, to improve interoperability, to have the flexibility to meet unique user needs, to have compatibility with existing systems and standards, and to have the ability to evolve to a next generation of datalink systems. The paper describes several current DoD Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program (CTEIP) projects and shows how dependent and interdependent they are on datalink systems. A new Joint Service CTEIP project, Standard Interoperable Datalink System (SIDS), will become the facilitator in the process of defining a standard datalink, including weapon system/platform telemetry, time-space-position information, target command and control, voice communications, time correlation data, and possibly video.

Prototype system for detecting and processing of IEEE 802.11G signalsKypriotis, Georgios 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / On the modern battlefield, successful and fast communications is a critical issue. So the need for transmitting information in larger amounts through a military high-speed network increases. Thus the military is seeking viable and effective solutions that may fulfill these requirements in an operational environment. This thesis develops a prototype system based on appropriate low-cost software and hardware solutions. This system is able to detect, analyze and process wireless 802.11g signals. The evaluation of the newly designed system proved that it is effective up to distances of about 400 m with a low packet error rate and could be a useful tool for detecting wireless 802.11g networks. After evaluating the system, it was used for capturing wireless signals so that we would determine the effective transmission range and the data throughput of an 802.11g network. We determined that such a wireless network could be used in military operations because it offers high data rates up to 200 m, while it maintains a connection of the wireless clients for distances up to 400 m. In addition, the performance data collected can be used as guidelines for estimating the expected performance in an operational situation and can provide useful information for successful planning. / Lieutenant, Hellenic Navy

Standards for Evaluating Paintings by Children in the Primary GradesJenkins, Frances M. 01 1900 (has links)
Since most adults generally evaluate children's creative expression by adult standards, view it as meaningless, and frequently present children with hackneyed forms of visual "art"--such as stencil patterns, or color books in which the children are encouraged to copy adult drawings--the purpose of this study is to develop legitimate standards which the adult observer may use in judging children's paintings and to explain these standards through analyses of children's paintings selected from Grades I through III.

Principals Give Voice to the ISLLC Standards--An Investigation of Leadership Job PrioritiesMuse, Marcia 01 January 2008 (has links)
Due to the increasing demands on educational administrators it has become essential that leadership priorities be established. This study investigated elementary school principals' job responsibilities and how the school administrator prioritized the many facets of the job. The literature supported the continued escalation of job demands on the school principal. Thus with growing accountability, it is essential that school leaders learn to balance the responsibilities of being the instructional leader and the school manager. A purposeful sample of 25 elementary school principals in central Virginia was used in a qualitative study. Principals from small (0-350), medium (351-750), and large (751-1200) sized schools participated in the research. The data did not support any trends or patterns related to school size and the work of the elementary principal. In addition, the research regarding the fulfillment of the ISLLC Standards (Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium) suggested that localities should correlate their local professional responsibilities and qualities with the national standards in order to help with the use of a common language when discussing principal job qualities and responsibilities. The study also suggested that although instructional leadership was a principalship priority, it was often overshadowed by the school managerial demands. Each participant maintained one-day logs of activities and the results supported the interview responses in the area of instructional leadership. The principals' day included a variety of situations that interrupted the scheduling of classroom observations. Principals shared that they wanted to be more of an instructional leader yet management demands often prevented them from being actively involved in the classroom. Elementary leaders described the frustrations of time management and the desire to have more "human resources" available to assist them with the very demanding job. In addition, school administrators explained various methods used to prioritize the job responsibilities in order to "run the school". This research study explored how principals described their jobs and their leadership with hopes of discovering what might be done to encourage more qualified applicants.

Evaluation of secure 802.1X port-based network access authentication over 802.11 wireless local area networksOzturk, Huseyin Selcuk 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution unlimited / Since wireless technology has been used in Local Area Networks (LAN), our networks are easier to build and are more scalable and mobile than legacy structures. While providing these functionalities, Wireless LAN (WLAN)'s have some security vulnerabilities that should be addressed. Failing to examine the security risks of WLAN technology and take the necessary countermeasures may result in unauthorized entry into the legacy local area networks and other attacks. A secure connection to an intranet, which holds critical data and applications, must be the utmost consideration in the effort to protect critical resources. This thesis builds an open-source test-bed for evaluating WLAN security protocols. Moreover, it investigates the suitability of the IEEE 802.1X standard to provide the required security framework to WLANs. This research determines that the IEEE 802.1X could enhance the security level in authentication and privacy by the enabling rekeying process, but would not prevent Denial of Service attacks via unauthenticated management frames. / Turkish Navy author.

Modelling business processes with links to ISO 9001Gingele, Joachim January 2001 (has links)
This work in the domain of quality management and business process design looks at how the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems are designed and implemented in business. It is the aim of the research reported in this thesis to support manufacturing companies when modelling a Fulfil Order Process by identifying the links to the ISO 9001 quality standard and highlighting potential impact from any changes in the process or the standard during a redesign project. It does so by presenting a modelling technique, named IDEF9ooow, hich will enablec ompaniest o take a systemic perspectiveo f a Fulfil Order Process identifying all relevant links to ISO 9001. A research strategy based around the experiences of companies when designing business processes with links to ISO 9001 was adopted. In-depth case studies carried out by the author showed that simply documenting what an organisation does to satisfy the various elements of ISO 9001 is still one of the most common approaches adopted. This results in a process-oriented character only at the documentation stage. It is the result of limited guidance on how to integrate the requirements of ISO 9001 in business processes. The work proceeded by exploring the domains of business processes, the use of systems thinking to explain business processes and the relevance of ISO 9001 requirements from a processbased viewpoint. A set of criteria was developed to identify activities, information and other flows controlled by ISO 9001 to design a Fulfil Order Process in a manufacturing company. This provided the context for the development of the modelling technique IDEF90oow, hich is an enhanced version of IDEFo, and its validation by review and by use in two manufacturing companies. The originality of this work lies in the identification and emphasis by the author of the need to take a systemic view of business processes when designing or redesigning a processbased ISO 9001 quality management system. Also, criteria for a technique to address the modelling of a Fulfil Order Process were identified. Furthermore this contribution to knowledge includes the identification of links between ISO 9001 requirements and a holistic Fulfil Order Process. This led to the development of further criteria for modelling such a business process showing the links to ISO 9001. IDEFooo represents an improved modelling approach that fulfils the identified criteria and permits the systemic design or redesign of a Fulfil Order Process while establishing the links controlled by the ISO 9001 quality standard

IAS 39: impact on integrated treasury systems.06 December 2007 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how a move towards an integrated Internet-based treasury function could have a significant impact on the systems that have to support compliance with the requirements of the international accounting standard IAS 39. The objectives of the dissertation are: to identify the measurement, recognition and disclosure requirements as set out in (or implied by) IAS 39 in order to select those requirements for which the possibility of compliance would most probably be affected by the suggested move from a traditional treasury to an integrated Internet-based treasury; and further, to identify the required changes that take place within a treasury environment when changing from a traditional treasury to an integrated Internet-based treasury function and then to match the identified probable system changes implied by the treasury environment change referred to above with the possible requirements from IAS 39 that could be affected by such a system change. / Prof. D Coetsee

Scholz, H. E. 11 September 2015 (has links)
A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Engineering
University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
Johannesburg 1981 / This thesis describes the development of an alternative
aooroximate technicue for the elasto—plastic analysis c^
unbraced and partially-braced rigid rrames.
The proposed technigue, which allows for the treatment o_
simple portal frames as well as for multi-storey and multibay
structures, is not confined to steel to which it has been
applied in this research but could also be developed for
other materials such as reinforced concrete.
In essence, the method represents a refinement and extension
of the Merchant-Rankine interaction formula. The proposed
concept makes use of a multi-curve interaction principle
placing the failure load of the actual frame oetween its
plastic collapse load on the one hand and a load related
to the elastic buckling load on the other hand. The failure
curves in the inelastic range are empirical. The plastic
collapse load is obtained using the standard first-order
approach. The required elastic parameters are evaluated
from an elastic buckling analysis and a second-order elastic
load analysis, both performed on suitable subassemblages
for the general frame. The mathematical derivations are
based on the slope-deflection equations including stability
functions.
For the elastic analyses a purpose-made computer program
has been developed. This program makes allowance for
transverse column loads, patterned beam loadings and the
special case of sway buckling including bending, termed
"Symmetry-Buckling".
In this thesis the proposed method has been applied to
the structure as a whole. In this case the plastic
collapse load of the entire frame is determined, whereas
the corresponding elastic parameters are evaluated from
as many subassemblages as are contained in the structure.
The combination of plastic collapse load and elastic
parameters which gives the lowest failure load is significant
.
It is also possible to calculate failure loads for individual
sections of a framework. The plastic collapse load
and the salient elastic parameters would then both be
examined on matching subassemblages.
Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that a graphical
presentation of the elastic results is possible, thus
allowing a "manual" evaluation of the failure load,
i.e. without the need of a computer, once the plastic
collapse load is known. The derivation of the plastic
collapse load is not included in the scope of this thesis.
In addition, an approximate analytical procedure, using
established computer methods, has been formulated for
the calculation of the elastic values.
A number of frames have been evaluated by the proposed
method and the results have been compared both, to the
Merchant-Rankine solutions and to mathematical solutions
obtained using an elasto-plastic, computer analysis.
The accuracy of the new method has also been tested
against published laboratory results of other researchers.
In addition, ten small-scale model frames were analysed
and tested for this research to confirm the validity ot
the empirically evolved interaction curves.
It has been concluded that the proposed method is in
good agreement with test results anc discrete mathematical
solutions, and thus represents a satisfactory substitute
for the more complex approaches, without the loss in
accuracy and the restriction in usage which applies to the
Merchant-Rankine formula.
Some other related aspects such as the application of
the proposed method to other materials and structures,
deflections at the working load level, in-plane member
instability, lateral torsional buckling and additional
P - A effects have been identified as areas recommended
for future research.
