Land Surface Phenology of North American Mountain Environments Using the Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging SpectroradiometerHudson Dunn, Allisyn 31 August 2009 (has links)
Monitoring and understanding plant phenology is becoming an increasingly important way to identify and model global changes in vegetation life cycle events. Although numerous studies have used synoptically sensed data to study phenological patterns at the continental and global scale, relatively few have focused on characterizing the land surface phenology of specific ecosystems. Mountain environments provide excellent examples of how variations in topography, elevation, solar radiation, temperature, and spatial location affect vegetation phenology. High elevation biomes cover twenty percent of the Earth's land surface and provide essential resources to both the human and non-human population. These areas experience limited resource availability for plant growth, development, and reproduction, and are one of the first ecosystems to reflect the harmful impact of climate change. Despite this, the phenology of mountain ecosystems has historically been understudied due to the rough and variable terrain and inaccessibility of the area. Here, we use two MODIS/Terra satellite 16-day products, Vegetation Index and Nadir BRDF Adjusted Reflectance, to assess start of season (SOS) for the 2007 calendar year. Independent data for elevation, slope, aspect, solar radiation, and temperature as well as longitude and latitude were then related to the SOS output. Based on the results of these analyses, we found that SOS can be predicted with a significant R² (0.55-0.64) for each individual zone as well as the entire western mountain range. While both elevation and latitude have significant influences on the timing of SOS for all six study areas. When examined at the regional scale and accounting for aspect, SOS follows closely with Hopkins' findings in regard to both elevation and latitude. / Master of Science

Mathematical modeling of pathways involved in cell cycle regulation and differentiationRavi, Janani 12 January 2012 (has links)
Cellular processes critical to sustaining physiology, including growth, division and differentiation, are carefully governed by intricate control systems. Deregulations in these systems often result in complex diseases such as cancer. Hence, it is crucial to understand the interactions between molecular players of these control systems, their emergent network dynamics, and, ultimately, the overall contribution to cellular physiology. In this dissertation, we have developed a mathematical framework to understand two such cellular systems: an early checkpoint (START) in the budding yeast cell cycle (Chapter 1), and the canonical Wnt signaling pathway involved in cell proliferation and differentiation (Chapter 2). START transition is an important decision point where the cell commits to one round DNA replication followed by cell division. Several years of experimental research have gone into uncovering molecular details of this process, but a unified understanding is yet to emerge. In chapter one, we have developed a comprehensive mathematical model of START transition that incorporates several findings including information about the phosphorylation state of key START proteins and their subcellular localization. In the second chapter, we focus on modeling the canonical Wnt signaling pathway, a cellular circuit that plays a key role in cell proliferation and differentiation. The Wnt pathway is often deregulated in colon cancers. Based on some evidence of bistability in the Wnt signaling pathway, we proposed the existence of a positive feedback loop underlying the activation and inactivation of the core protein complex of the pathway. Bistability is a common feature of biological systems that toggle between ON and OFF states because it ensures robust switching back and forth between the two states. To study and explain the behavior of this dynamical system, we developed a mathematical model. Based on experimentally determined interactions, our simple model recapitulates the observed phenomena of bimodality (bistability) and hysteresis under the effects of the physiological signal (Wnt), a Wnt-mimic (LiCl), and a stabilizer of one of the key members of core complex (IWR-1). Overall, we believe that cell biologists and molecular geneticists can benefit from our work by using our model to make novel quantitative predictions for experimental verification. / Ph. D.

Examination of Head Start students' and teachers' attitudes and behaviors toward trying new foods as part of a social marketing campaignStratton, Jessica Nicole 13 May 2008 (has links)
Objective: To determine the impact of preschool teacher food-related attitudes and behaviors on child food behaviors.
Design: A twelve-week intervention and observational study with teachers completing questionnaires before and after the intervention.
Setting: Head Start classrooms throughout Virginia.
Participants: 177 preschool Head Start teachers and 1534 children.
Intervention(s): Food Friends, a twelve-week social marketing campaign, was conducted by Head Start teachers during the Spring 2007, introducing children to novel foods with food puppets, nutrition-related activities and novel food tasting opportunities. Hypotheses related to the impact of preschool teachers' food-related attitudes and behaviors on children's food behaviors were tested, and changes in teacher and child food behaviors were measured.
Main Outcome Measures: Teacher food-related attitudes and behaviors were measured/quantified. Child food behaviors were measured and compared to teacher attitudes and behaviors.
Analysis: Descriptive, correlational and t-test statistics were conducted.
Results: Teachers' and children's acceptance of novel foods improved after the Food Friends program, however, no direct correlations were found between teacher food-related attitudes and behaviors and child food behaviors.
Conclusions and Implications: Preschool teacher attitudes and behaviors may not significantly impact child food-related behaviors. More research is needed to determine effective ways of encouraging positive child food behaviors. / Master of Science

Rheology of waxy crude oils in relation to restart of gelled pipelinesFakroun, A., Benkreira, Hadj 18 September 2019 (has links)
Yes / Waxy crude oils are pumped hot but upon power cut, pumping stops, the oil cools leading below the wax appearance temperature to precipitation of the wax and the formation of a gel throughout the pipe. In such a situation, what is the minimum pressure required to restart flow, not to merely deform the gel or break it? This paper provides a solution to this problem using microscopic observations under controlled cooling conditions and rheological data conducted in constant stress mode under controlled temperature and cooling conditions and restart experiments in laboratory pipelines replicating the rheometric conditions and deviations from them to inform large diameter operation in the field. Three important findings derive from the experimental data collected: (i) A fragmentation stress , rather than the static stress that precedes it, is found to be the more accurate predictor of flow re-start pressures; (ii) Waxy crude oils gels exhibit true yield stress and yielding process but also show flow on application of the slightest stress below yielding; (iii) This flow, in the elastic region, is jagged rather than continuous suggesting a consolidation process of the crystals and their agglomerates forming the gel. In the broader context of the existence of a yield stress, the data presented here show that there is such a thing as a yield stress and the concepts of a yield stress and that everything flows are not mutually exclusive.
