Measuring group differences using a model of test anxiety, fluid intelligence and attentional resources

Bosch, Anelle, 1982- 06 1900 (has links)
Literature reports that test anxiety may have an influence on aptitude test performance for some racial groups and therefore serves as a source of bias (Zeidner, 1998). Testing organisations have also found that individuals from African groups perform poorly on measures of fluid intelligence, putting them at a disadvantage when these scores are used for selection and training purposes. The current study examines a model defining the relationship between test anxiety, attentional resources and fluid intelligence in the following manner: an increase in test anxiety will result in a decrease of attentional resources as well as a decrease in fluid intelligence. With a decrease in attentional resources we will see a negative influence on fluid intelligence and test performance for different racial groups. Twenty-five African individuals and twenty-five individuals from Caucasian racial groups have set the stage to answer the question if certain groups experience higher test anxiety and thus perform poorly on fluid intelligence measures. Significant relationships were found, within and between groups, for attentional resources and fluid intelligence. Meanwhile, other factors, such as test anxiety, were not strongly associated with fluid intelligence performance. Future research into reasons why certain racial groups display lower overall attention in testing situations is suggested in order to ensure that tests for selection and training and aptitude tests are fair to all racial groups. / Psychology / M.A. Soc. / The Brazil is the largest producer of sugarcane, due to expansion of cultivated areas, mechanized fertilizer becomes very important for the increase in operating performance in this culture, but this fertilization may show some problems in the distribution of fertilizers, so that when not performing the characterization of fertilizers through the angle of repose, particle size and density of nutrients, among other. Thus, it becomes necessary to develop new technologies that enable an improvement in the application of fertilizers in the cultivation of sugarcane. In view of this, a new concept of fertilizer in development considered as a prototype because this performs individualized application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, providing greater efficiency in the distribution of these over other fertilizer machine. With this work the objective was to evaluate the mechanical application of NPK individualized culture of sugarcane. The experiment was conducted in the Matão municipality in the area of sugarcane belonging to the Fazenda Cascavel, possessing approximately 1.66 ha experimental area. The experimental design was completely randomized (DIC), with three treatments and thirty replications for treatment. This design was established according to the criteria of quality control, and monitoring of variables held during fertilization operation. At the end of the evaluation period were collected 90 sample points in total, with 30 points per treatment. The treatments were: 1- mechanized fertilized, without herbicide; 2- Operation combined (simultaneous application of herbicide and fertilizer); and 3- Two operations (separate application of herbicide and fertilizer). It was concluded that the best operational quality through control charts was the third treatment, two operations (separate application of herbicide and fertilizer) for presenting less variability. / Brazil is the world leader in sugarcane production, and the largest sugar exporter. Developing new varieties is one of the main factors that contribute to yield increase, and the interpretation of genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) at the final selection stage is an important consideration in yield estimation. In order to select the best genotypes, varieties are tested in different environments (locations and years), and breeders need to estimate the phenotypic performance for principle traits such as tons of cane yield per hectare (TCH). Since GEI affects breeder selection of superior genotypes it is necessary to use mathematical or statistical models that account for GEI and are able to efficiently identify such genotypes. Geneticists and biometricians have used different methods and there is no clear consensus of the best method. In this paper we present a comparison of three methods, viz. (i) Eberhart-Russel; (ii) AMMI; (iii) and mixed model (REML / BLUP), in a simulation study performed in the R computing environment to verify the effectiveness of each method in detecting GEI, and assess the particularities of each method from a statistical standpoint. In total, 63 cases representing different conditions were simulated, generating more than 34 million data points for analysis by each of the three methods. The results illustrated that each method detects GEI in a different way, and each has some limitations. All three methods detected GEI effectively, but the mixed model showed higher sensitivity. When applying GEI analysis in practice it is important to first verify the assumptions inherent in each model, and respect these limitations in choosing the method to be used

The sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is the most applied crop in the sugar yielding as much as internal consumption as exportation, besides its application in yielding alcohol and biomass production. The crop area has been increased expressively leading breeders to search more yielding genotypes to the different planted areas. Multi-environment trials are commonly conducted in plant breeding programs to evaluate potential genotypes mainly to yield. This study included 16 sugarcane genotypes at 14 locations evaluated in four years, that is, four harvests (sugarcane plant, first, second and third ratoon). The objective was to investigate the sugarcane's genotype adaptability and stability to Ton of Pol per Hectare (TPH) attribute in multi-environments trials from three statistical methodologies: Joint phenotypic linear regression (E-R), Reaction norm (NR) and Harmonic average performance relative breeding values (MHPRVG). The estimated genotypic average heritabilities values via MHPRVG showed themselves as high, what lead to high accuracy in the genotypic selection ( higher than 90%). The genotypes IACSP963076, IACSP963048 and IACSP985024, first harvest, IACSP963048, IACSP963076, IACSP962073 and IACSP985024, second harvest, IACSP962073, IACSP962008 and IACSP963076, third harvest and IACSP963076, IACSP985024, IACSP962073 and IACSP962008, fourth harvest, were the selected when one considers simultaneously the stability, adaptability and productivity (TPH) attributes and thereby them are the recommended genotypes to be planted in this studied macro region when analyzed via MHPRVG. In a mean expression, the recommended genotypes by simultaneous selection based in MHPRVG are the IACSP963076, IACSP962073, IACSP985024 and IACSP962008 genotypes, reaching a average value of 2.8% higher than the four harvests overall mean. The purpose of this dissertation is to analize the implentation of the SPC (Statistical Process Control) for the management of operations in a food company. Statistical and Graphical Methods to Determine Importance and Interaction of Building Design Parameters to Inform and Support Design Decisions

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This research is aimed at studying the impact of building design parameters in terms of their importance and mutual interaction, and how these aspects vary across climates and HVAC system types. A methodology is proposed for such a study, by examining the feasibility and use of two different statistical methods to derive all realistic ‘near-optimum’ solutions which might be lost using a simple optimization technique. DOE prototype medium office building compliant with ASHRAE 90.1-2010 was selected for the analysis and four different HVAC systems in three US climates were simulated. The interaction between building design parameters related to envelope characteristics and geometry (total of seven variables) has been studied using two different statistical methods, namely the ‘Morris method’ and ‘Predictive Learning via Rule Ensembles’. Subsequently, a simple graphical tool based on sensitivity analysis has been developed and demonstrated to present the results from parametric simulations. This tool would be useful to better inform design decisions since it allows imposition of constraints on various parameters and visualize their interaction with other parameters. It was observed that the Radiant system performed best in all three climates, followed by displacement ventilation system. However, it should be noted that this study did not deal with performance optimization of HVAC systems while there have been several studies which concluded that a VAV system with better controls can perform better than some of the newer HVAC technologies. In terms of building design parameters, it was observed that ‘Ceiling Height’, ‘Window-Wall Ratio’ and ‘Window Properties’ showed highest importance as well as interaction as compared to other parameters considered in this study, for all HVAC systems and climates. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested to extend such analysis using statistical methods such as the ‘Morris method’, which require much fewer simulations to categorize parameters based on their importance and interaction strength. Usage of statistical methods like ‘Rule Ensembles’ or other simple visual tools to analyze simulation results for all combinations of parameters that show interaction would allow designers to make informed and superior design decisions while benefiting from large reduction in computational time. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Built Environment 2015

Factors to determine standardised human resource metrics for strategic business management : a case of selected organisations from the hospitality industry in Cape Town

Kapondoro, Lloyd January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology. / The paradigm shift from administrative to strategic Human Resource Management (HRM) has, arguably, necessitated the need for a more objective and quantitative HRM that shows how HRM interlinks with strategic organisational outcomes. Consequently, HR metrics, measurements and analytics can be tools, which can give HRM a status and position that is similar to other functional departments in organisations that provide numerical data. The purpose of this study was to explore HRM factors that are critical to determine strategic HR metrics. The purpose arose owing to documented scholarship, which argues that the current regime of HR metrics has no appeal to top management; is composed of too many metrics that are confusing; is suitable for traditional HRM; and does not give HRM a strategic status. The objective of the study was, therefore, to provide HR factors that link with strategic or organisational level outcomes and based on these factors, determine a metric that HR practitioners and top management can adopt as standard. The literature review had to be merged in a systems theory framework to develop the conceptual framework to start a grounded theory methodology. Within this methodology both secondary and primary data was collected and analysed. As part of its summary, the literature review included a meta study of prominent research on the HRM-firm performance relationship. The mini meta-analysis involved 27 studies whose mean coefficient of determination was calculated to show the strength of the variability in firm performance for which HRM accounted. This analysis revealed that HRM, on average, accounted for 31% of the variability in firm performance in the models that were used to investigate the relationship. An analysis was conducted of documents as part of a content analysis to collect secondary data, while questionnaires were used to collect primary data. The key finding was that the strategic HR factors are the HRM outcomes, namely employee engagement, commitment, satisfaction and embeddedness, while the HR metric that connects the HR factors and strategic outcomes is given as p=kH+c, where p is organisational performance, H are the HR factors, k is a constant of proportionality, and c is basic employee performance. It was also found that employee engagement had the most impact on organisational performance, relative to the other HR factors. As a result, the key recommendation made in this study is that organisations should use employee commitment, engagement, satisfaction and embeddedness to boost performance with special attention on employee engagement. The metric p=kH+c can be used to measure the level at which HR factors boost performance.

January 2016 (has links)
The objective of this study is characterize the spatial distribution of gold grades in the Pilar de Goiás mine (GO) by the Ordinary Kriging and Simulation Sequential Gaussian methods. The study started with the database validation of boreholes and the regularization of samples for the length of one meter. Based on the descriptions of the boreholes, it was obtained the attitude of the layers of rock types and, therefore, the geological model, developed in the Leapfrog Geo® program. The checked samples were then used for the statistical and geostatistical analyses. In both methods, the variograms were modeled and the search ellipsoid was defined. For Ordinary Kriging, the data filter restricted to the range 0 to 4.38 ppm and the outliers were replaced by the maximum content value. The results of kriging are valid because the frequency distribution is consistent with the original data. The analysis of the surface containing the higher levels implied that there is no preferential direction of growth of gold content, but this surface follows the regional foliation of the host rocks. The estimation by Simulation Sequential Gaussian were effective to model the layer of interest, which are the highest gold grades / Mestre
