On the effectiveness of writing strategies in promoting 13-15 years old Chinese ESL learners' writing ability

Peng, Gao January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of writing strategies in promoting 13-15 years old Chinese ESL learners’ writing ability. Two writing strategies I selected in this study are Julia's (in James 2000) 8-step writing strategy and Englert's (1991) POWER strategy. Both writing strategies are designed based on Hayes and Flower's (1989) theory of writing process but with different steps in guiding writing. According to their different functions, these two strategies can stand for two main kinds of writing strategies at present. The study included two questionnaires and two writing tests designed for fifteen Chinese students who were chosen randomly in grade 3 of a middle school. Through the analysis of these questionnaires, the students’ attitude to writing and the functions of writing strategies were collected in order to keep the two tests reliable and authentic. And then, the pre-test was used to evaluate these students' primary level of English writing; in the post-test, these students were divided into three groups: the first two groups received two writing strategies and the last one was no strategy group. The comparison of their writing results between the two tests were analysed. Both writing strategies groups in the post-test showed the effectiveness of the given writing strategies .   Two writing strategies were chosen for this study according to the research objects' English level and cognitive capability. And the fifteen research objects chosen in Chinese middle school represent the average level of Chinese ESL learners in writing. The analysis of their results in both tests focused on the content of their writings and writing elements, such as, vocabulary, grammar, organization. In the qualitative research of the study, the 8-step writing strategy is shown to be the more effective one for 13-15 years old Chinese ESL learners.

WikiLeaks Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy : A Translation Study of Metaphors and Metonomy in Two Newspaper Articles from the Guardian

Herrloff, Kerstin January 2011 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this essay was to examine what methods might be used in translation from English to Swedish of two informative newspaper articles about current events, which took place in 2010 and 2011, viz. the publishing of secret documents on the Internet by JulianAssange and WikiLeaks. The study is based on Lakoff and Johnson’s theories on metaphorical concepts, presented in their work Metaphors We Live By (1980/2003), and the focus of the translation study is on metaphors and metonomy. The texts contain a large number of metaphors. Almost 100 of those have been listed in an Appendix, attached to this paper, and a great many of these metaphors were analysed. The special metaphor types of metonomy and personification were studied separately, as well as together with the rest of the metaphors. The theoretical model used was Vinay and Darbelnet’s theories of direct and oblique translation, comprising the following seven strategies: literal translation, borrowing, calque, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. Other theorists, whose professional expertise and experience proved useful in this work, were Munday, Newmark and Ingo. Parallel texts, monolingual dictionaries and the Internet were also most valuable in the translation process. Choosing the appropriate and correct vocabulary and expression in the target language was not always an easy task, and certain words and passages translated were revised on several occasions. As for the translation strategies used, equivalence was the most interesting one, and transposition should perhaps have been used to a larger extent. Literal translation was probably used most of them all.

Thermal Models and Energy Saving Strategies for Rotational Molding Operations

Ghosh, Kalyanjit 09 July 2004 (has links)
Transient heat transfer phenomena in the rotational molding of plastic parts are modeled in this study. Natural convection and radiation from the furnace and flue gases to the mold housing are analyzed. Other models include transient heat transfer through the mold, single-phase conduction through the particulate plastic material prior to phase change, melting of the plastic and heating of the liquid pool. Subsequent staged cooling of the mold and solidification of the plastic using a combination of free and forced convection and radiation, are also modeled. The mold wall, melt, and solidified plastic regions are divided into a number of finite segments to track the temperature variation with time during the molding process. The corresponding variations in masses and thicknesses of the melt and solidified plastic regions are estimated. This information is used to estimate the energy consumption rates for various phases of the process. The model is applied to a specific molding process in a commercial rotational molding plant. Parametric studies of the effect of heating and cooling durations on the plastic temperatures and the energy consumption rates are conducted. These analyses provide insights about opportunities for optimization of the heating and cooling schedules to reduce overall energy consumption and improve throughput. The overall energy and gas consumption for the rotational molding process, taking into consideration the thermal mass of the auxiliary housing (steel) required to hold the molds, is estimated on a per-batch basis. In addition, a preliminary design for an alternative system for heating and cooling the molds using a high temperature heat transfer fluid (HTF) flowing through jackets integral to the molds is proposed.

Research on Distribution Channel Strategies of Certification Body

Chou, Ching-Wen 23 August 2011 (has links)
Following to the industrial competition which is getting along intense day by day, it is a deeply concerned subject to the manufacturer from spread global world, how to prove their product into the international market successfully. Facing in the culture and language of different country, as well as various countries¡¦ tedious product laws, regulations and multiple limits in the procedure, the manufacturer confront the enormous challenge with the product development into the global market. Increasing by the demands of the global certification system gradually, in order to win the initiative, it is essential to let their product obtain various countries¡¦ approval positively and rapidly. The main purpose for this research contains the discussion in different circuit¡¦s characteristic of certification body, different circuit¡¦s shortcomings and advantages, and the choices¡¦ estimation of consideration factor in certification systems. This pattern of research adopts personal methodology in processing empirical analysis which belongs to the personal design and analysis issue. We discover that different circuit strategy causes the influence on the manufacturer and certification body. While the certification body draws up the circuit strategy to comply with the manufacturer¡¦s demands, they must expect the effect to different circuit¡¦s variation meanwhile. Speaking of the manufacturer or certification body, it causes different kinds of advantages and shortcomings no matter for the zeroth order circuit or the first-order circuit. Although the zeroth order circuit is a pipeline that lets the coordination and communication between manufacturer and the certification body directly, however, the latent shortcoming still exists. The different circuit system applies to different suitable situation in Taiwan. Keywords: Distribution Channel Strategies, Certification Body

A Study of Strategies for Oil and Gas Auctions

Nordt, David Paul 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Oil and gas auctions help transact billions of dollars in property sales in the US each year. Value is lost by participants with ineffective strategies. Federal lease auctions have been investigated from public data, but research in this narrow area peaked in the 1980s. Private property auctions did not emerge as a transaction force until nearly a decade later; however, today they dwarf federal lease sales in volume and value. This is the first study to publish research on private auctions and the first to consolidate historical lease research findings with private auction strategies. This dissertation reviews past research, interviews industry professionals, analyzes case histories, conducts game experiments, and synthesizes these views for strategic application. Findings from these efforts include the following: Reducing uncertainty increases bid values; Federal lease bid values tend to be log normal; Aggressive bidding results in a poor portfolio performance; Increasing competition increases bid values; Inexperience increases aggressive bidding; A significant group of companies do not follow consistent auction strategies; Top winning bid drivers are aggressive 3P reserves and commodity prices; Top value risks are commodity prices, capital, and operating expenses; Properties with upside value receive higher bids using sealed-bid auctions; Auction players can bid significantly less and sustain a high win probability; More money is left on the table in federal lease sales than private auctions; Poor data is primary reason auctions fail to complete the transaction; Profit taking is primary reason for selling properties though an auction; Market metrics are useful in valuation analysis; Producing properties receiver higher bids than undeveloped properties with same common knowledge including total proved reserves; Oral auctions receive higher bids than sealed-bid auctions with same common knowledge; Competition increases bid values in sealed-bid auctions; Reserve size does not increase relative value in sealed-bids with same common knowledge other than a magnitude of volume.

Considering representational choices of fourth graders when solving division problems

Gilbert, Mary Chiles 17 September 2007 (has links)
Students need to build on their own understanding when problem solving. Mathematics reform is moving away from skill and drill types of activities and encouraging students to develop their own approaches to problem solving. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics emphasizes the importance of representation by including it as a process standard in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000) as a means for students to develop mathematically powerful conceptualization. Students use representation to make sense of and communicate mathematical concepts. This study considers the way fourth grade students view and solve division problems and whether problem type affected the choice of strategy. This study also looked at factors that affect students' score performance. Students in extant classrooms were observed in their regular mathematics instructional settings. Data were collected and quantified from pretests and posttests using questions formatted like students see on the state assessment. The results indicate that students moved from pre-algorithmic strategies to algorithmic strategies between pretest and posttest administration. The results also indicate that problem type did not predict students' choice of strategy and did not have an affect on the students' ability to arrive at a correct solution to the problem. This study found that the students' choice of strategy did play a significant role in their quest for correct solutions. The implication is that when students are able to make sense of the problem and choose an appropriate strategy, they are able to successfully solve division problems.

A Study in Developing Knowledge Management Strategies in a Medical Laboratory¡Va model from a military hospital in southern Taiwan

Lin, Su-shun 16 June 2009 (has links)
Knowledge is a strategically important resource to improve competition superiority of an organization. It plays a vital role in healthcare enterprises where knowledge is widely used as the major part of their basic resource. The rapid growing in medical laboratory technology has also enabled this field to be highly professional and knowledge¡Vintensive. To maintain the accuracy and credibility of the documentation and to improve the quality of the service, the personnel in a medical laboratory have to preserve and share their knowledge through the invisible process of creation and dissemination in a highly efficient way. It is considered of great benefit to improve the efficiency of knowledge management in a medical laboratory. We conduct a study to focus on improving the efficiency of knowledge management in the operation of a medical laboratory. We studied the application of knowledge management in a medical laboratory in a military hospital in southern Taiwan. The actuator elements of knowledge management from Arthur Anderson¡¦s model, consisting of leadership, enterprise¡¦s culture, information technology and performance appraisal, were used to construct a questionnaire. The questionnaires were mailed to chiefs of medical laboratories in medical centers. The opinion of personnel in the medical laboratory of a military hospital was surveyed with the questionnaires. We tried to find out the obstacles of promotion, key success factors and case strategy in knowledge management and build up strategy of promotion and performance measurement. Result: I. The current promotion obstacles in the medical laboratory A. The leading three ones are lack of incentive and objective evaluation in performance measurement dimension, lack of community in organizational culture and lack of integration in information technology dimension. B. The least three ones are lack of dedicated team in information technology dimension, unwilling to share in organizational culture dimension and lack of insight in leadership dimension. II. The key success factors in the promotion of knowledge management in the medical laboratory: The priority is the cognition and endorsement of executives, the willingness to communicate and share, and education and training. Finally, a strategic map was constructed according to balanced score card theory in the hope of creation of a reference in knowledge management in the medical laboratory.
