Tais noções são relidas a partir de alguns pontos da elaboração de Jacques Lacan sobre a linguagem e da noção de estrutura em Edmund Leach / Abstract: The aim of this work is to discuss the hypothesis put forward by Claude Lévi-Strauss that language could be taken as a condition for culture. Our initial assumption is that Lévi-Strauss works allow a double interpretation relatively to such hypothesis. A first interpretation is built upon the examination of that hypothesis under the light of the theoretical principIes set up by Structural Linguistics, as well as by relating them to Lévi-Strauss's intention of giving a strict scientific status to Anthropology. The second interpretation is built upon the examination of the notions of language and culture presented by Lévi-Strauss in some of the works published after L' Anthropologie Structurale, such as La Potiere Jalouse and La Pensée Sauvage. Such notions are revised on the basis of some of the points concerning language as developed by Jacques Lacan as well as of the notion of structure present in Edmund Leach's work / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Harmony and Structure in Richard Strauss's Macbeth

Bills, Danny C. 08 1900 (has links)
This study begins with a discussion of step theory. Included in this discussion is the basis of chord succession, the idea of fundamental representation, and the uses of reinterpretation technique. These concepts are then used to demonstrate the continuity and logic of the harmonic language found in Strauss's Macbeth.

This dissertation aims, first of all, to show how in the view of the Teutonic American political philosopher Leo Strauss religion exerts a major political function in the maintenance of the social establishment and of the civil order. It is, thus, to see how for this philosopher religion, as the holder of a moral horizon legitimized by the idea of the revelation, is an indispensable element to political life, since, in the straussian view, in order to ensure the functionality of any political regime, is necessary, largely, that the individuals respect the rules and the values which make it possible life in society, believing in their absolute or unconditional character, something that only is possible through religious discourse. From the observation of these elements, we’ll try also to analyze the strong critics that Strauss strikes against the western modern political project, since this project, in the name of reason, sought to reduce religion to the condition of superstition, putting all human moral development at risk. In this sense, we’ll try to observe how, for Strauss, in opposition to the enlightenment project of rationalization of society, religion would be one of more important instruments to keep a protect atmosphere of the man and society, as a kind of cocoon that keep them protected from the evils brought by the devastating character of the philosophy, therefore, we believe to have access to important aspects of the thought of Strauss, which would allow us to understand how this author rethinks the place and the usefulness of religion in politics in the contemporary societies.

Interpreting Richard Strauss's Der Krämerspiegel from the perspectives of the performers and the audience.

Hurst, Michael Shane 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this document is to examine Richard Strauss's 1918 song cycle Der Krämerspiegel in order to discern compositional intent and to address problems performers may face in communicating the work to a contemporary audience. Examining the existing literature, it is never clearly stated why Strauss composed such an anomalous song cycle that defied aesthetic and generic norms of the day. The premise taken in this study is that Strauss, who was litigiously forced to write the work in order to fulfill a contract with the publisher Bote & Bock, composed certain difficulties into the cycle to make it less marketable and thus less profitable for the firm. Furthermore, he commissioned a text that lampooned the publishing industry in general and certain firms and individuals in particular. Following a brief history of Strauss's involvement with the publishing industry, general considerations for interpretation are examined. The individual songs are then explored, keeping in mind the text's word play and parody, Strauss's use of self-quotation, and the challenges performers and audiences face when confronting Krämerspiegel. Finally, the individual songs are explored, and suggestions for preparation and performance of Krämerspiegel are given suggesting a more operatic understanding of the piece, especially given the cycle's relationship to Strauss's opera Der Rosenkavalier.
