Arthur Stringer (1874-1950) was one of Canada's first professional authors. A prolific writer, he published fifty-nine books, including thirty-eight novels and fifteen volumes of poetry. His work is now out of print and unduly ignored. The dissertation comprises an annotated selection of Stringer's correspondence and a discussion of him as man of letters. The Introduction draws on Stringer's personal papers--including unpublished manuscripts, notebooks, and correspondence--to illustrate his working methods, his relationship with editors and publishers, and the role he played in the literary community. The letters selected show Stringer handling the daily problems of authorship, giving support to other Canadian writers, and (in the letters written for publication) discussing literature and literary criticism. The dissertation includes a chronology, a check-list of Stringer's books, notes on his correspondents, and a list of the repositories of his letters.

Notched stringer segments spliced with metal connector plates (MCPs) and pallets with spliced stringer(s) were tested in static bending in order to determine the relative effectiveness of different stringer splicing methods and under what conditions the process is or is not effective. The species tested were oak, southern yellow pine, yellow-poplar, and two combined species - oak and yellow-poplar, and oak and southern yellow pine. The metal connector plates used were 3 x 4-inch, 3 x 6-inch truss plates, and a 3 x 4-inch plug plate. The splice methods tested were a vertical splice (VS), a 45° angle splice (AS), and a vertical splice with -inch gap between segments (VSG). The results of bending tests of these specimens were compared to non-spliced whole stringers and pallets containing whole stringers. Multiple comparison, statistical methods were used to analyze all test data. An analysis of the failure locations and types of specimens was also used to analyze test results. Vertical spliced stringers with 3 x 4 and 3 x 6 inch truss plates were the best designs of those tested. Spliced stringers were an average of 112% and 74% bending strength and stiffness of new non-spliced stringer. These plates were an average of 26% stronger and 13% stiffer than the 3 x 4 inch plug plate splice stringer. There was no difference between the performance stringers spliced with 3 x 6 and 3 x 4 inch truss plate. An angle splice design and the addition of 1.25 x 6 inch truss plate on the tension side of spliced stringer did not appear to improve the strength and stiffness. A gap between segments significantly reduces splice strength and stiffness by an average of 35% and 16% respectively. When mixing stringer segment species, the performance is determined by the weaker segment. The average strength and stiffness of pallets containing spliced stringers were similar to that of pallets with whole stringers, however the variation in performance was greater when notched stringer pallets contain splices. / Master of Science

I dagens globaliserade samhälle där nationella gränser spelar allt mindre roll är utrikeskorrespondenternas rapportering en viktig del för vår förståelse av omvärlden. Man kan säga att de fungerar som publikens fönster ut mot världen. Syftet med undersökningen är att belysa kvinnliga korrespondenter som rapporterar för svenska medier. I uppsatsen står kvinnornas berättelser och reflektioner i fokus för att ge en inblick i och förståelse för deras vardag. Genom kvalitativa intervjuer med tolv kvinnliga utrikeskorrespondenter undersöks hur de resonerar kring val av nyheter, vinklar och källor samt hur kvinnliga korrespondenter upplever sitt yrke och sin yrkesroll. Med ett genusperspektiv på dagordningsteorin undersöks även hur korrespondenterna tror att publiken kan påverkas av deras rapportering. Resultatet av de kvalitativa intervjuerna visar att de kvinnliga korrespondenterna gör många aktiva val i sin rapportering. Dessa val handlar många gånger om att lyfta kvinnofrågor, berätta kvinnors historier samt ge dem en röst i den dagliga nyhetsrapporteringen. Något de anser är viktigt för att ge en mer mångfacetterad bild av världen. De lyfter de ämnen som traditionellt ses som kvinnliga enligt teorin om mjuka och hårda frågor, men ifrågasätter uppdelningen och värderingen av mjukt och hårt. De vi intervjuat upplever både fördelar och nackdelar med att vara kvinna och korrespondent. Den största fördelen är att de som kvinnor har tillgång till miljöer och personer som inte deras manliga kollegor har tillgång till. De nackdelar som kvinnorna beskriver är alla knutna till sexism. De upplever att de ibland blir nedvärderade och klappade på huvudet eller utsätts för sexuella trakasserier och anspelningar på grund av sin könstillhörighet.

<p>Det här är en studie om svenska utrikeskorrespondenter. Utrikeskorrespondenter ger kanske ofta den bästa rapporteringen men blir allt färre i takt med att medieföretagen sparar. Samtidigt borde behovet av utrikesnyheter öka i en globaliserad värld. Uppsatsens syfte är att få bättre kännedom kring hur de svenska reportrar som arbetar utomlands själva ser på sitt arbete och genom en skissartad undersökning se hur utrikesnyheterna förändrats under en novembervecka 1975, 1985, 1995 och 2005. Jag har gjort kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra svenska utrikeskorrespondenter och en kvantitativ skissundersökning av utrikesnyheterna i Aftonbladet, Expressen, Svenska Dagbladet och Dagens Nyheter.</p><p>Resultatet av de kvalitativa intervjuerna visar att de utrikeskorrespondenter som deltog i studien tycker att det finns mycket att vinna med deras arbete; större självständighet i nyhetsvärdering, högre textmässig kvalitet och personligt berättande är några exempel. Samtidigt visar det kvantitativa stickprovet att de egna utrikesnyheterna och korrespondenterna blir färre. I kvällspressen består utrikesnyheterna i dag nästan bara av omskrivna och översatta utländska artiklar och i dagspressen har antalet utrikesnyheter minskat till följd av omläggningen till tabloid-format. En av slutsatserna i arbetet är att begreppet utrikeskorrespondent kan vidgas och innefatta många olika källor som ger upphov till utrikesnyheter.</p>

During the past few years, in comparison to traditional riveted structures, integral metallic skin stringer structures have played more and more important roles in aircraft design due to the fact they are economical and also have the ability to reduce weight. Their wide application in aircraft, especially large integral structures is limited because of the fact that they have shortcomings in damage tolerance performance. Hence, calculating the crack growth lives and improving the damage tolerance performance of integral structures by selecting appropriate materials or choosing rational structures is a critical work. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is to find effective analysis methods of integral metallic skin-stringer panels for the use in engineering. Cont/d.
