A Study for Remediation of MTBE and Diesel Contaminated Soils by Soil Heating/Air Stripping and Steam Injection/Vacuum Extraction- One Dimensional Mass Transfer Analysis and Verification

This research reports on an experimental and theoretical study of soil heating/air stripping and steam injection/vacuum extraction for remediation of MTBE and Diesel Contaminated Soils. Two one-dimensional mass transfer models were using to simulate the process of remediaction. Contaminant kinds(MTBE and Diesel)¡A contaminant concentration (152~13,912 mg/kg soil)¡Asoil temperature(38~120¢J)¡Asteam injection pressure(0.5~1.0 atm)¡A and the mass of steam used(0.379~0.730 kg/h)were employed as the experimental factors in this study. In soil heating/air stripping study, rising soil temperature will enhance the MTBE removed efficiency¡A it was shown in the concentration of effluent gas. Further, the flow rate at outlet of column was higher than that at inlet of column, it revealed MTBE transfers from liquid phase to gas phase and was removed by gas flow. The concentration of effluent gas curve in low initial MTBE concentration test was similar with high concentration test, but the mechanisms was quiet different¡Ait need advanced adsorption test to find the reasons. In medium initial MTBE concentration test¡Athe concentration of effluent gas curve showed linear shape. When using steam injection/vacuum extraction treating MTBE contaminated soil, it showed 90¢Mefficiency can be reached in one hour. In steam injection/vacuum extraction study, it showed higher initial diesel contaminant concentration¡Ahigher initial concentration of effluent gas. Further, in high initial diesel concentration test (13.912 g diesel/kg soil test and about 5g/ kg soil tests)¡Athe concentration of effluent gas curves had a dominant drop at early time in remediation, it revealed the injection steam flow was quiet large, so diesel didn¡¦t has enough time to transfer to gas phase, that the gas couldn¡¦t been saturation at outlet of column. But in low initial diesel concentration test (about 1 g diesel/kg soil tests), the concentration of effluent gas curves showed the typical NAPL remediation curve. The different with in high and low initial concentrations might from the complex composition of diesel. Because at the early time in remediaction of high initial diesel concentration, the low carbon numbers diesel could abundantly evaporate, it caused the high concentration of effluent gas. With the remediation time go by, the low carbon numbers diesel exhaust. So the main composition of effluent gas transfer to high carbon numbers diesel, that the concentration of effluent gas curve showed the slowly decline. For high initial diesel concentration test (13.912 g diesel/kg soil)¡A the efficiency was the highest (73.7¢M). For low initial diesel concentration test (about 1 g diesel/kg soil), the efficiency was the lost (about 20¢M). Further, the remediation of diesel contaminated soil exited a rapid removed period. Under the conditions of this study, the rapid removed period could remove more than 95¢Mcontaminant of diesel removed at hold remediation time. The experiment results also showed that larger the mass of steam injection, shorter the rapid removed period, and larger the steam injection pressure, longer the rapid removed period. When using soil heating/air stripping treating diesel contaminated soil, the removed efficiency was worse 10-20¢Mthan the same initial diesel contaminated concentration. In simulating remediation process, the prediction with the MTBE measured concentration yielded good agreement in NAPL model. But to get the better fit of diesel in NAPL model, it might set the ¡§could removed mass¡¨ to initial condition of model. In non-NAPL model, MTBE also showed good agreement with model, and the model enabled the prediction of the initial contaminant level in the soil.

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE INTRACLUSTER MEDIUM AND THE CLUSTER STELLAR CONTENT

We study specific aspects of the relationship between the stellar content and the intracluster media (ICM) of galaxy clusters. First, we attempt to solve the long-standing difficulty in explaining the highly enriched ICM by including a previously unaccounted for stellar component: the intracluster stars. To determine the relative contributions of galactic and intracluster stars to the enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM), we present X-ray surface brightness, temperature, and Fe abundance profiles for a set of twelve galaxy clusters for which we have extensive optical photometry. Assuming a standard IMF and simple chemical evolution model scaled to match the present-day cluster early-type SN Ia rate, the stars in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) plus the intracluster stars (ICS) generate 31⁺¹¹₋₉%, on average, of the observed ICM Fe within r₅₀₀(∼ 0.6 times r₂₀₀, the virial radius). Because the ICS typically contribute 80% of the BCG+ICS Fe, we conclude that the ICS are significant, yet often neglected, contributors to the ICM Fe within r₅₀₀. However, the BCG+ICS fall short of producing all the Fe, so metal loss from stars in other cluster galaxies must also contribute. By combining the enrichment from intracluster and galactic stars, we can account for all the observed Fe. These models require a galactic metal loss fraction (0.84(−0.14)^(+0.11)) that, while large, is consistent with theoretical models of Fe mass not retained by galactic stars. The SN Ia rates, especially as a function of galaxy environment and redshift, remain a significant source of uncertainty in further constraining the metal loss fraction. Second, we study the effects of ram-pressure stripping on infalling galaxies using a warm molecular hydrogen (H₂) as a tracer by carrying out a Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS) survey of four galaxies with signatures of ram-pressure stripping. We have discovered two galaxies, ESO 137-001 and NGC 4522, with warm H₂ tails stretching 20 kpc and 4 kpc in length, respectively. In the case of ESO 137-001 where we measure a warm H₂ mass loss rate of ∼ 2 − 3 M⊙ yr⁻¹, we estimate that the galaxy will lose all of its gas in a single pass through the cluster core. Strong warm H₂ emission is detected in one other galaxy, CGCG 97-073, which a region within its tail that is mainly dominated by H₂ emission. The warm H₂ observed in these three galaxies share similar temperature and column density properties with warm H₂ masses ranging from 10⁶ − 10⁸ M⊙. From a comparison with the SINGS warm H₂ sample, our results indicate that these galaxies experiencing significant ram-pressure stripping show anomalously high warm H₂ emission that cannot be explained purely from star formation. This adds credence to the hypothesis that H₂ within these galaxies is being shock-heated from the interaction with the ICM. We also discover that stripping of warm and hot dust, as measured at 8 μm and 24 μm, is a common feature of the galaxies observed in our sample. In the case of NGC 4522, we capture the turbulent nature of the stripping process. We measure the star formation rates using published Hα and measured 24 μm luminosities for all of our galaxies and find that some of them have suppressed star formation rates compared to similar mass counterparts in the field. We find a possible association between Hα and warm H₂ emission in three of the four galaxies observed. We conclude that the variation of H₂ properties observed in our sample is likely due to the galaxies being in different stages of ram-pressure stripping. Finally, we report on our efforts to improve the performance of the Lochkeed Arizona Infrared Spectrometer (LAIRS), a near-IR, tunable filter imager. We have made significant progress in identifying the sources of key issues such as the a highly asymmetric line profile and the unstable performance of the servo controller at the MMT. Solutions have been implemented for these issues, such as a revised mounting strategy for the tunable filter plates and a completely new controller with higher bandwidth. Significant progress has been made towards resolving these issues, but a few issues remain before LAIRS meets all of its requirements.

Measuring the Environmental Dependence of Galaxy Haloes with Weak Lensing

We investigate the uses of gravitational lensing for analysing the dark matter haloes around galaxies, comparing galaxies within groups and clusters to those in the field. We consider two cases: when only photometric redshift data is available, and when spectroscopic redshift data is available for a sufficiently large sample of galaxies. For the case of data with photometric redshifts, we analyse the CFHTLenS dataset. This dataset is derived from the CFHTLS-Wide survey, and encompasses 154 deg^2 of high-quality shape data. Using the photometric redshifts to estimate local density, we divide the sample of lens galaxies with stellar masses in the range 10^9 Msun to 10^10.5 Msun into those likely to lie in high-density environments (HDE) and those likely to lie in low-density environments (LDE). Through comparison with galaxy catalogues extracted from the Millennium Simulation, we show that the sample of HDE galaxies should primarily (~61%) consist of satellite galaxies in groups, while the sample of LDE galaxies should consist of mostly (~87%) non-satellite (field and central) galaxies. Comparing the lensing signals around samples of HDE and LDE galaxies matched in stellar mass, we show that the subhaloes of HDE galaxies are less massive than those around LDE galaxies by a factor 0.65+/-0.12, significant at the 2.9 sigma level. A natural explanation is that the haloes of satellite galaxies are stripped through tidal effects in the group environment. Our results are consistent with a typical tidal truncation radius of ~40 kpc. For the case of data with spectroscopic redshifts, we analyse the GAMA-I and the ongoing GAMA-II surveys. We demonstrate the possibility of detecting tidal stripping of dark matter subhaloes within galaxy groups using weak gravitational lensing. We have run ray-tracing simulations on galaxy catalogues from the Millennium Simulation to generate mock shape catalogues. The ray-tracing catalogues assume a halo model for galaxies and groups, using various models with different distributions of mass between galaxy and group haloes to simulate different stages of group evolution. Using these mock catalogues, we forecast the lensing signals that will be detected around galaxy groups and satellite galaxies, as well as test two different methods for isolating the satellites' lensing signals. A key challenge is to determine the accuracy to which group centres can be identified. We show that with current and ongoing surveys, it will possible to detect stripping in groups of mass 10^12 Msun to 10^15 Msun.

DEVELOPMENT OF A SEMI-AUTOMATED TOBACCO STRIPPING MACHINE UTILIZING STRING TRIMMERS

Conventional stripping of burley tobacco is labor intensive and typically requires 50 to 75 worker hours per acre (wkr•hr/ac). The goal of the project was to reduce labor by optimizing leaf removal by string trimmer heads using combinations of strings lengths and motor speeds. In tests conducted on a single grade, all leaves outside the grade were removed by hand. Plants were run through the machine for sting lengths of 5, 7 and 9 inches and associated motor speeds which were monitored and recorded. Stripping efficiencies were calculated for each plant and collectively for each set of four plants. The machine was then tested for three grade stripping efficiency. Particle size analysis tests were run to determine potential losses due to leaf shredding. Efficiencies for single grade testing ranged from 93 to 96% for optimal string length and speed combinations. Stripping three grades by machine resulted in an average of 97% efficiency. Potential losses due to shredding accounted for 5.6% of the total weight mechanically removed. It is believed that this stripping concept, implemented on a full scale four grade basis, could result in savings of at least 18 wkr •hr/ac [45 wkr•hr/ha].

Ammonia Removal and Recovery from Wastewater Using Natural Zeolite: An Integrated System for Regeneration by Air Stripping Followed Ion Exchange

This study revealed that ammonium ion exchange of natural zeolite could be a feasible method of nitrogen removal and recovery from permeate from anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs). NaCl concentrations optimized for chemical regeneration in batch experiments did not match those in continuous column tests. Instead, the mass ratio of Na+ to Zeolite-NH4+-N was significant for improving regeneration efficiency in column experiments; this mass ratio was 750 g Na+/g Zeolite-NH4+-N required for regeneration efficiency over 90% in 2 hours at pH 9. ???To decrease the NaCl dose in regeneration of exhausted zeolite, a high pH regeneration method was developed using an NaCl concentration of 10 g/L at pH 12 (the mass of Na+ to Zeolite-NH4+-N of 4.2 ) which achieved a regeneration efficiency about 85%. The recovery of ammonium nitrogen from the exhausted zeolite was assessed with air stripping followed by ammonia collection in an acid scrubber. The effects of shaking and air stripping were investigated in batch tests and the results showed the superiority of air stripping over shaking. Liquid circulation and air flow rates were varied for optimization of ammonia recovery in a continuous zeolite-packed column combined with a regeneration chamber and a stripping column. The liquid circulation rate had no significant effect on either the regeneration efficiency or the ammonia transfer efficiency from ammonium nitrogen to ammonia gas, while the ammonia transfer efficiency significantly increased with the air flow rate.??? Furthermore, the effect of pH on ammonia recovery was tested. Both the regeneration efficiency and the ammonia transfer efficiency were significantly improved with increasing pH. When the pH was increased from 9.5 to 12, the regeneration efficiency increased from 9.2% to 84% and the ammonia transfer efficiency increased from 54% to 92%. The nitrogen recovery process that combines zeolite ammonium exchange and air stripping can decrease chemical costs for regeneration of exhausted zeolite and efficiently collect ammonium nitrogen to be reused as fertilizers. Hence, the integrated nitrogen process can resolve the challenge of nitrogen removal in anaerobic membrane bioreactors treating organic wastewater in sustainable manners.

The unbound nucleus 13Be

The fragmentation of a 133 pps beam of 14Be ions at 35 MeV/A on targets of carbon and lead has been used to study the structure of the unbound nucleus 13Be. Neutrons and 12Be reaction products were measured in the DeMoN array and a detector telescope placed at 0° respectively. These coincidence measurements were used to reconstruct the 13Be particles. The beam energy was measured on a particle by particle basis from the time of flight. This was essential for momentum measurements which were made in the reference frame of the projectile. A significant contribution to the experimental background came from reactions in the detector telescope, which had to be subtracted. Relative velocity (arithmetic velocity difference) and invariant mass analyses both signify the existance of significant strength close to the 12Be + n threshold. Simulations including an experimental filter clearly show that this includes strength that is localised below 500 ke V in relative energy. Momentum distributions for 12Be, 10Be, neutrons and the reconstructed 13Be particle in the longitudinal direction have been measured. The 13Be distribution displays evidence for a two component structure. Calculations of the neutron stripping from 14Be have shown that this structure requires s-wave stripping to explain the narrow component. The wider component is consistent with d- wave stripping, and additional contributions from p-wave stripping cannot be excluded. The angular distribution of neutrons from 12Be + n breakup, measured in the 13Be reference frame is essentially isotropic. There is evidence for a weak asymmetry which could be due to broad over-lapping states of both positive and negative parity at energies below 2 MeV. This would support the inclusion of a P½ resonance in the low-lying structure of 13Be.
