January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: The contamination of the umbilical region of newly hatched ostrich is one of the major problems in the bird production. This work aimed to evaluate the umbilical healing of ostriches (Struthio camelus) through the use of chlorhexidine as antiseptic associated to the total or partial umbilical cord cut off. It was evaluated both the weight performance and "causa mortis" associated with omphalitis occurrence as well. It was used 227 newly hatched ostriches of which the umbilical cords were either sectioned totally or 0.5 cm above their insertion. The umbilical region antisepsis consisted of topical administration of an aqueous or alcoholic solution of chlorhexidine, 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0% during three days. A group of non-treated animals was added also. The umbilical healing and weight performance were evaluated in the ostriches at 14 and 28 days of age. Those animals which came to death were necropsied and umbilical fragments were submitted to histopathological exam. Results showed that all the chlorhexidine solutions reduced the risk of omphalitis, being the alcoholic solution 2% the most efficient. Umbilical healing was faster in animals in which the umbilical cord was totally cut off. The histopathological exam revealed no morphological differences between the non-treated group and the alcoholic chlorhexidine 2% group. In general, the newly hatched ostriches presented low weight performance due to inadequate handling. Animal deaths were not associated to omphalitis. It can be concluded that the use of chlorhexidine as antiseptic for newly hatched ostriches is safe and favors the umbilical healing. Moreover, for a better effectiveness it is necessary to remove the umbilical cord in its insertion. / Doutor

Ostrich (Struthio camelus) chick survival to 6 months post hatch : estimation of environmental and genetic parameters and the effect of imprinting, foster parenting and deliberate careWang, Magretha Diane 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The South African Ostrich industry was established more than 100 years ago. Despite appreciable
fluctuations and modifications in demand, the industry perseveres, with meat and leather as the
current primary driving force. Low and variable early chick survival is globally considered as a
major constraint in the industry. In spite of obvious welfare and production implications, research
findings concerning ostrich chick survival are scant. Four studies involving chick survival to 24
weeks post hatch were thus performed.
South African Black ostrich (Struthio camelus var. domesticus) data obtained from a commercial
pair-bred ostrich flock maintained at the Oudtshoorn Experimental Farm, South Africa comprising
10418 records were utilized to run a series of single- and multiple-trait binomial analyses using
either linear models (ASREML) or threshold models (Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods,
employing Gibbs sampling software) respectively. Suitable fixed and random effect models
together with variance and (co)variance components were derived from these analyses. Ostrich
chick survival to 24 weeks post hatch was low (28%) with a large environmental component. Preincubation
storage time only affected 0 to 3 week survival, while incubator had a significant effect
on cumulative survival traits to 24 weeks as well as on 13 to 24 week survival. Female chicks
outperformed males at 0 to 12 weeks, 0 to 24 weeks, 4 to 12 weeks and 13 to 24 weeks with
regard to survival. Hen age was significant for all traits except survival during the first week as well
as for survival from 13 to 24 weeks post hatch. All analyses exhibited comparable low heritability
estimates for all survival traits except for 0 to 1 week survival and 13 to 24 week survival (h2 = 0.12
and 0.10; m2 = 0.08 and 0.07 respectively) which demonstrated higher additive genetic and
maternal components when threshold models, using Gibbs sampling algorithms, were employed.
Neither moisture loss nor day of external pipping exhibited notable additive genetic correlations
with any of the estimated survival traits. Day-old chick weight demonstrated a low correlation with
early chick survival (rg = 0.24 ± 0.19) with heavier chicks tending to have a higher survival
probability. The effects of rearing method on early chick survival and growth were also
investigated. Comparisons between chicks reared and fostered by adult ostriches in a semiextensive
environment and chicks imprinted onto humans under an intensive system and between
regular human handling in an intensive rearing system and the standard farm protocol of an
intensive rearing system were made. No difference in the early chick survival to 3 weeks post
hatch of chicks reared by foster parents and those chicks imprinted onto humans was
demonstrated. At later ages, those chicks reared by foster parents outperformed human imprinted
chicks. Human imprinted chicks exposed to regular handling demonstrate an enhanced early survival when compared to chicks exposed to conventional rearing protocol in intensive systems.
The study is seen to provide guidance for further research on this topic. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Suid-Afrikaanse volstruisbedryf is meer as 100 jaar gelede gevestig.

Estimation of genetic distances and heterosis in three ostrich (Struthio camelus) breeds for the improvement of productivityDavids, Annelin Henriehetta 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric (Animal Sciences))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A study was conducted to characterize the three ostrich breeds available as genetic resource in South
Africa, namely the South African Black (SAB), Zimbabwean Blue (ZB) and the Kenyan Redneck (KR), and
their respective crosses. Growth, slaughter traits and reproduction of these ostriches were recorded at
Oudtshoorn Research Farm in the Western Cape of South Africa. Individual non-linear regressions
(Gompertz) were fitted to the data of 390 purebred and 41 crossbred ostriches, using the SAS NLIN function.
Heterosis was estimated for each parameter of the Gompertz model. The estimated adult weight (Aparameter)
of the ZB (147 kg) and the KR breeds (148 kg) were higher than that of the SAB breed (129 kg).
The overall growth rate (B-parameter) of the ZB breed (0.0075) and the SAB breed (0.0080) was lower than
that of the KR (0.0150). The age at maximum weight gain (C-parameter) was higher for the ZB breed (226
days) compared to the SAB (198 days) and the KR (194 days). Heterosis for the A-parameter was estimated
at -6.2% and at -12% for the C-parameter. The slaughter traits studied were slaughter weight (SLW), carcass
weight (CW), dressing percentage (DP), fan fillet weight (FFW), pH0, pH24, drip loss % (DL%), cooking loss
% (CL%), tenderness and meat colour traits. Differences were observed between the means for SLW of the
SAB (86.5 kg) and ZB (93.9 kg). Mean DP of the KR breed (52.5%) was increased relative to the low DP of
their SAB contemporaries (48.8%). The sire lines (ZB and KR) and crosses were heavier than the SAB (dam
line), whereas the crosses resembled the dam line for meat quality traits. Means for pH24 also differed, with
higher values for the sire lines (ZB – 6.36; KR – 6.4) relative to the SAB (5.85). The instrumental b* colour
value also differed between the SAB (9.4) and KR (6.9). Records used for assessing the reproduction and
body measurements of purebred and crossbred dams were 428 in total. Traits analyzed were, total egg
production (TEP), the number of fertile eggs, number dead in shell chicks, hatchability and chick production
(CP), the time to lay, live weight, front chest circumferences as well as tail circumference. The ZB and KR
were heavier in live weight and of larger body measurements than the SAB, whereas the SAB exhibited
superior reproduction performance in comparison with the ZB and KR breeds. Derived heterosis estimates
amounted to 2.2% for tail circumference, 12% for TEP, 12% for hatchability and 19% for CP. Genetic
variation between and within the breeds were determined utilizing 19 microsatellite markers. Significant
molecular genetic differences were observed between the three breeds. The SAB and ZB (Fst = 0.10 and
Nei = 0.49) were genetically most similar, whereas the genetic distance between the KR and ZB breeds were
furthest (Fst = 0.13 and Nei = 0.61). The SAB breed exhibited the highest heterozygosity within its population
and the ZB the lowest heterozygosity. These results contribute to a better understanding of the utilization of
the distinct ostrich breeds for commercial production.
Die ouderdom by maksimum groei (C-parameter)
ondersoek was, was slagmassa (SLW), karkasmassa (CW), uitslag persentasie (DP), “fan fillet” massa
Heterose beramings was 2.2% vir
Hierdie resultate dra by

Comparative morphology and functional significance of mechanical and sensory structures in the upper digestive tract of the ostrich (Struthio camelus) and emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae)Crole, Martina Rachel January 2013 (has links)
This study describes, on a comparative basis, the morphology of mechanical (the linguo-laryngeal apparatus) and sensory (Herbst corpuscles and taste buds) specialisations in the upper digestive tract (bill and oropharynx) of the ostrich and emu, with a view to a better understanding of the functional significance of these structures. The ostrich and emu are commercial entities that constitute important niche industries and are farmed intensively throughout South Africa. A lack of information on the mechanical and sensory specialisations of the upper digestive tract in these two birds hampers a sound understanding of food selection and intake. A total of 48 adult (12-14 months) ostrich heads and 48 adult emu (12-14 months) heads obtained from birds at slaughter at commercial abattoirs and farms, as well as 5 ostrich chick (2-4 weeks) heads and 1 emu chick (8 weeks) head, obtained from previous research projects, were used for this study. Morphological features were described using basic gross anatomical (dissection and stereomicroscopy) and histological techniques (H&E staining), supplemented by differential staining for cartilage and bone, transmission electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. The findings of the study were compared with the relevant literature and hypotheses for functional significance were formed.
The avian glottis channels air from the oropharynx to the trachea and is situated on an elevated structure, the laryngeal mound. It is imperative that the glottis be protected and closed during swallowing, which in mammals is achieved by covering the glottis with the epiglottis, as well as by adduction of the arytenoid cartilages. An epiglottis, however, is reportedly absent in birds. Ratites such as the ostrich and emu possess a very wide glottis in comparison to other birds. The question therefore arises as to how these large birds avoid inhalation of food particles through a wide glottis, with apparently little protection, particularly as their feeding method involves throwing the food over the glottis to land in the proximal esophagus. In the ostrich, when the glottis was closed and the tongue body retracted, the smooth tongue root became highly folded and the rostral portion of the laryngeal mound was encased by the pocket in the base of the ∩-shaped tongue body. In this position the lingual papillae also hooked over the most rostral laryngeal projections. However, in the emu, retraction of the tongue body over the closed glottis resulted in the prominent, triangular tongue root sliding over the rostral portion of the laryngeal mound. In both the ostrich and emu these actions resulted in the rostral portion of the laryngeal mound and weakest point of the adducted glottis being enclosed and stabilised. Only after conducting a comparative study between these two birds using fresh specimens did it become clear how specific morphological peculiarities were perfectly specialised to assist in the closure and protection of the wide glottis. A unique anatomical mechanism in ratites was identified, described and proposed, which may functionally replace an epiglottis; the linguo-laryngeal apparatus.
The oropharynx of the ostrich and emu is richly supplied with Herbst corpuscles. This widespread distribution of these mechanoreceptors has not previously been reported in birds. Specific concentrations of Herbst corpuscles within the oropharynx, which differ between the ostrich and emu, assist in the accurate positioning of the tongue and laryngeal mound for cleaning the choana (internal nares). The Herbst corpuscles are strategically located to aid in the handling and transport of food and the median palatine and ventral ridges in the ostrich display a concentration of Herbst corpuscles which denote these structures as sensory organs, namely the palatal and interramal organs. Three specific arrangements of Herbst corpuscles were noted in the oropharynx. The first arrangement consisted of groups of corpuscles located peripherally around a myelinated nerve and was present in the bill tip. The second arrangement, possibly linked to the first, was that of individual or groups of corpuscles without an obvious associated nerve and was present throughout the remaining regions of the oropharynx. The third arrangement was that of corpuscles associated with large, simple branched tubular mucus-secreting glands. The basic structure of Herbst corpuscles in the ostrich and emu, observed by light and transmission electron microscopy, of a capsule (with cellular and acellular lamella), an outer zone (collagen fibrils, fibroblasts and a fluid matrix), an inner core (formed by bilaterally symmetrical specialised Schwann cells) and a receptor axon, is similar to that noted for other avian species. However, unlike in other birds, the capsule of the Herbst corpuscle in the ostrich and emu is formed by myofibroblasts which indicates contractile properties for this component of the corpuscle in ratites. Sensory cilia were noted in the myofibroblasts of the capsule and fibroblasts of the outer zone of the ostrich Herbst corpuscle which may assist in regulating the tension of the capsule. These features have not been reported in other avian species. Although the structure of the palaeognathous palate has been widely studied, relatively little information is available on the morphology of the ratite bill. The kiwi possesses a bill tip organ and the present study confirmed the existence of this somatosensory organ in the ostrich and emu. Examination of the rhamphotheca of these two birds demonstrated numerous specialisations. In the emu, rhamphothecal serrations with intervening keratinised pegs on the rostral mandibular tomia resembled a form of pseudo-teeth. These structures may share a similar embryological origin to teeth; however, they would appear to function by channelling and enhancing vibratory stimuli to Herbst corpuscles in nearby bony pits. In the ostrich, epidermal troughs were present in the regions overlying the bill tip organ and functioned to enhance vibratory stimuli to the underlying Herbst corpuscles. Additionally, in the ostrich only, and not related to the structure or functioning of the bill tip organ, the rostral tomia and maxillary and mandibular nails were composed of typical tubular and inter-tubular horn. This may represent a unique feature in birds. The structure of the mandible and premaxilla was similar to that described previously for these birds. However, the persistence of Meckel’s cartilage through to the adult bird in the ostrich and emu is a novel avian feature not previously reported.
The bony bill tips were adorned with numerous sensory (bony) pits which displayed similar distribution patterns in the ostrich and emu and indicated the presence, macroscopically, of a bill tip organ. The total number of pits in the bill tip of the ostrich and emu did not differ significantly, although regional differences did occur. The sub-divisions of the trigeminal nerve (N. opthalmicus R. medialis and N. intramandibularis) innervating the bill tip were well developed in both birds and displayed extensive branching. The emu displayed more myelinated nerve fibres in both nerves than in the ostrich. As myelinated nerve fibres supply Herbst corpuscles, the number of nerve fibres is correlated to the number of corpuscles. No correlation could be made between the number of pits in a particular region and the number of nerve fibres or with the relative percentage of Herbst corpuscles in that region. The bill tip organ in both species was basically similar except for the epidermal specialisations noted above. Two parts of the bill tip organ were recognised; the bony bill tip organ (Herbst corpuscles stacked in bony cavities and pits) and the peripheral bill tip organ (Herbst corpuscles in sheets or chains in the connective tissue between the epithelium and bone). The morphology of the bill tip organ in the ostrich and emu indicates that it is an organ that functions by direct touch. These two ratite species appear to possess the most elaborate bill tip organ of any pecking bird. The existence of a bill tip organ in the ostrich and emu is an enigma and points to the possibility that a bill tip organ is a basal structure in all palaeognathous birds (living and extinct). Furthermore, it is evident by observing the exploratory behaviour of the ostrich and emu, that they use their bill tip organ extensively as a tool for exploring and interpreting their environment as well as for discriminating food.
The sense of taste in birds is an important motivator for feeding as well as initial food selection. The existence of this sense in ratites has remained largely speculative. In the present study taste buds were only identified in the emu and were predominantly located in the caudal region of the non-pigmented oropharyngeal roof and sparsely
located on the oropharyngeal floor. The taste buds extended the full width of the epithelium in which they were located and were ovoid structures. The taste bud was composed of centrally located, vertically oriented light and dark cells (representing both receptor cells and supporting elements) and peripherally situated follicular cells which were continuous with the surrounding Str. germinativum of the stratified squamous epithelium. Positive IHC labelling for neurofilament demonstrated numerous fine nerve fibres (Neurofibra gustatoria) within the connective tissue immediately surrounding the taste bud. Taste bud morphology in the emu was similar to that described in other birds. However, when sectioned tangentially they were indistinguishable from the surrounding epithelium with H&E staining. By using IHC labelling, concentrations of nerve fibres could be demonstrated beneath apparently nondescript epidermal structures, thus indicating the presence of a taste bud. The distribution of taste buds in the oropharynx could be linked to the particular feeding method of the emu. Based on information from GenBank, it would appear that the relatively few taste buds present in the emu oropharynx would mainly function in distinguishing bitter taste. As bitter-tasting compounds can cause a negative association with a particular food type, it would appear that the sense of taste in the emu would predominantly function for protection and not food selection. This study revealed various unique findings regarding the mechanical and sensory specialisations in the upper digestive tract of the ostrich and emu.
The ostrich and emu possess a combination of structures which functionally replace an epiglottis, namely the linguo-laryngeal apparatus.
Herbst corpuscles are widely distributed in the oropharynx of the ostrich and emu and their distribution is related to the particular feeding habits of these birds.
The capsule of Herbst corpuscles in the ostrich and emu is composed of contractile elements, a feature not reported in other birds.
The ostrich and emu possess a well-developed bill tip organ, which is an unusual feature amongst pecking birds.
Taste buds are present in the emu and no structures resembling taste buds were identified in the ostrich. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Anatomy and Physiology / Unrestricted

The effect of different levels of supplementary feed on the production of finisher ostriches (Struthio camelus) grazing irrigated lucerne (Medicago sativa) pasturesStrydom, Marline 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric (Animal Sciences))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the production of slaughter ostriches in a grazing environment at
different levels of supplementary feed.
Two grazing trials were conducted. In the first trial, one group of finisher ostriches (six months old) was put into
a feedlot and received a complete finisher diet. The other four groups were allowed to graze lucerne pasture
(stocking rate of 15 birds/ha) with 1500, 1000, 500, and 0g supplementary feed/bird/day. Pasture production
and intake were measured. There was no difference (P >0.05) between the end mean live weights of the feedlot
ostriches and those two grazing groups receiving 1500 or 1000g supplementation. The average daily gain
(ADG) of the group receiving 1000g supplementation was lower (P <0.05) than the ADG of the group receiving
1500g supplementation, but all three groups reached a mean target slaughter weight of 95kg within the 154 days
of the study. Therefore, pastures together with the correct supplementation (at least 1000g/bird/day) can
replace complete feeds in the finishing phase of slaughter ostriches and can play an important role in the
production of these birds. For lucerne intake, a quadratic relationship (P <0.01) was found between pasture dry
matter (DM) intake (g/bird/day) and supplementary feed intake (g/bird/day). The maximum lucerne intake level
(1692.8g/bird/day) was achieved at 619.6g supplementary feed/bird/day.
In the second grazing trial, finisher ostriches were allowed to graze lucerne pastures at two different stocking
rates (10 and 15 birds/ha) while receiving either 0 or 800g supplementary feed/bird/day. Ostriches receiving
supplementation had higher (P <0.05) mean end live weights than ostriches receiving no supplementation.
Ostriches receiving supplementation reached a mean target slaughter weight of 95kg within the timespan of the
trial, but ostriches receiving no supplementation did not. Stocking rate had no influence on mean end live weight
of the birds. An interaction (P <0.05) was found between the level of supplementation and stocking rate for ADG
of the birds. Stocking rate influenced ADG only for birds receiving no supplementation. As stocking rate
increased, ADG of birds receiving no supplementation declined. Results of the pasture data indicated an
increasing level of replacement of grazed lucerne DM by supplementary feed as the trial progressed and this
was more pronounced at the higher stocking rate of 15 birds per hectare. A high stocking rate seems to have
had a gradual depressing effect on lucerne DM production, while the less severe levels of defoliation at a lower
stocking rate promoted lucerne DM production.
A digestibility trial was conducted with mature ostriches (12 months old) to investigate the effect of
supplementation on intake and digestibility of nutrients, as well as to investigate the substitution effect that
ostriches may display when they receive supplementary feed in addition to grazing. The same dietary
treatments as in the first grazing study were given to ostriches while they were kept in metabolism crates. These
diets were also fed to 20-week old roosters to obtain energy values for these diets for roosters. These energy
values would be used to predict ostrich energy values for the same diets by means of a regression equation. For the roosters, each diet treatment was mixed with 50% maize to prevent digestive disorders and ensure
maximum feed intake. Ostriches started to substitute supplementary feed for pasture when supplementation
was supplied at levels higher than 62% (i.e. 1000g supplementary feed/bird/day) of total feed intake. For each
increase of 100g in supplementary feed intake, pasture was replaced at a rate of 4.9%. Higher (P <0.05) total
feed intakes were reached by ostriches if they grazed lucerne pastures and received supplementation than if
they grazed pasture alone. Pasture grazing alone had lower (P <0.05) dry matter digestibility (DMD) and
apparent metabolizable energy (AME) values for both ostriches and roosters than if pastures were supplied with
a supplement. A significant stepwise regression could not be computed for the prediction of ostrich AME values
from rooster AME values.
The economics of different feeding systems (extensive versus intensive) were evaluated with an economic
analysis, which was based on the same materials and methods and results of the first grazing trial. A margin
above feed cost (MAFC) analysis was performed to evaluate the economic viability of the different feeding
systems. The present value (PV) of the MAFC for the pasture-based system with 1000g/bird/day
supplementation was only 8.3% lower than that of the feedlot system over a period of six years, while the PV of
the cost of the same pasture-based system was 78.4% lower than that of the feedlot system. Birds finished on
lucerne pasture with 1000g supplementation led to a saving of 57% in feeding costs if compared to a feedlot
system. A sensitivity analysis of the MAFC revealed that the pasture-based system was less sensitive to
changes in feeding costs than the feedlot system. Therefore, the unique circumstances of each ostrich producer
will play a role in the decision whether to raise ostriches in a feedlot or on pastures.
voeding is gedurende hierdie studie ge-evalueer.
Twee weidingsstudies is uitgevoer.
Vir
lusern inname is ‘n kwadratiese passing (P <0.01) tussen weiding droë materiaal (DM) inname (g/voël/dag) en
aanvullende voeding inname (g/voël/dag) gevind.
Hierdie diëte is
by volstruise as wanneer weiding alleen beskikbaar was. Wanneer weiding alleen voorsien was, was daar laer
‘n Marge bo voerkoste analise is

procedentes dos estados do Pará, Maranhão, Tocantins e Minas Gerais. O DNA
utilizado o programa NTSYS-pc (Numerical Taxonomy and Multivariate Analysis
módulo Sahncof, do programa NTSYS 2.2.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic variability of ostrich
populations (Struthio camelus) through RAPD markers (Random Amplified
Polymorphic DNA). 121 samples of individuals were used from Pará, Maranhão,
Tocantins and Minas Gerais States. The genomic DNA was extracted from total
blood. Fifteen primers were selected among the 60. The products of the PCR were
visualized in agarose gel 1.5% and, a binary matrix was generated considering the
presence (1) of a amplified fragment and its absence (0). The ideal number of
polymorphic bands was estimated through the bootstrap analysis using the GQMOL
software. The genetic similarity was estimated through the Jaccard coefficient using
the NTSYS-PC (Numerical Taxonomy and Multivariate Analysis System) software,
version 2.02. The origin of the genetic diversity was quantified by the analysis of
molecular variance (AMOVA) using the Arlequin 2,0 software. The 15 primers
generated a total of 109 polymorphic bands and the bootstrap analysis showed that
at least 100 bands is the ideal number for sampling the genetic diversity, as
determined by the high value of correlation (r=0,99), the low value of the squared
deviation sum (1,25), and the low stress (0,05). The results suggest that the studied
populations are from the same origin. Management measures must be adopted in
these breeding, even using other molecular markers in the way to amplify the genetic
variability and the conservation of this important genetic resource. RAPD.The bootstrap analysis showed that from 100 bands the work already becomes more
trustworthy, a time that the magnitude of the correlation was well next to the
maximum value (r=0,99), as also the addition of squares of shunting lines (SQd)
reached low value 1,25 and the value of it estresse (e) was of 0,05. In the analysis
between pairs of groups, it was verified that the greater and minor similarity are in
lathe, respectively, of 0,86 and 0,00. In that it says respect to the distribution of
frequency of the similarities gotten between the 5,644 pairs formed in the genetic
matrix, it can be verified that 32,69 % of the pairs had been enclosed in the
classrooms with similarities varying of 0,01 the 0,10. One notices that the biggest
percentage (85,59%) of the pairs was distributed in the three first classrooms of the
extremities and that the minority of them (14,41%) presented similarities varying of
0,21 the 1,00. The test of Mantel showed correlation of 0,81 and the dendrograma
generated 67 groups delimited for the Sm that was of 0,49. The biggest 0,86
similarity was of and the minor of 0,06. The relative data to the analysis of molecular
variance had shown that the percentage of genetic variation between origins was low
and significant (24,03%, p < 0,0001), evidencing that great part of the variation meets
inside of the populations (75,97 %). markers RAPD they had been efficient in the
characterization of the genetic similarity.
