The reason of the norm. The meanings of norm for hospital directors and management

Cauvin Renault, Corine 29 September 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the issues regarding the process of normalisation from the point of view of directors and managers of hospitals. The approach is clinical and addresses the recognition of subjectivity within social constructions and the practice of social analysis based on intersubjectivity. The first part considers the components of normalisation in a transdisciplinary way by focusing on the understanding of implicit epistemologies where the premise of a specific medical reasoning is held. Closely informed by scientific thinking as well as by the necessity of a praxis, this section is presented as a matrix through which to consider a rupture in the clinical-analytical paradigm (that is, a rupture caused by a growth in complexity) and, consequently, strive towards establishing anormative-constructivist paradigm. Although the Norm is meant to ensure a neutral and symbolic link, the thesis argues that the rationale behind the norm reveals the transformation of the relationship between the subject and object in the scientific order. The hypothesis is that the subect of knowledge attempts to penetrate the object’s interior. Indeed, this epistemological position finds its translation in the radical objectivation of the « Other » of the relation. A second empiric part explores the main significations of the Norme for hospital directors and management. They instruct investment dynamics that support and shape the normative regime. The analysis is completed under different modes such as analyses of the institutional link and group and subjective dynamics. The meanings developed are compared to those formed with a group of medical auxiliaries and medical executive who left the public sector of hospitals. Ultimately, the thesis argues for the existence of a boundary to normalisation linked to the process of identification involved in appropriation.

Neurčité dovětky v angličtině a v češtině / General extenders in English and in Czech

Novotný, Tomáš January 2018 (has links)
Pervasive in spontaneous informal conversation, general extenders (GEs) are vague multiword expressions (e.g. or something (like that), and stuff (like that) vs. nebo něco (takovýho), a tak(ový věci)) that have been shown to fulfil a number of communicative functions, ranging from propositional to expressive. But while the English extenders have received a lot of meticulous attention in nearly four decades of research, the corresponding Czech constructions remain largely overlooked (perhaps with the exception of Tárnyiková 2009 and Novotný & Malá 2018). The current study aims to (1) present a wide range of English and Czech GE forms (collected using the method of collocational frames (Aijmer 2015) and then categorised according to structural similarities, thus suggesting possible GE patterns); and (2) examine their communicative functions in contemporary English and Czech as represented in comparable corpora of informal spoken discourse (Spoken BNC2014 and ORAL2013, respectively). Relying extensively on functional frameworks introduced in previous research (e.g. Overstreet 1999, 2014), this study confirms what has been known about English GEs and investigates the degree of applicability to the respective Czech constructions. A close qualitative analysis of some of the collected GE forms (in total,...

Douglas Adams : analysing the absurd

Van der Colff, Margaretha Aletta 21 August 2008 (has links)
This research emerges from an observation that Douglas Adams’s Hitch Hiker Series is not merely characterised by light-hearted comedy, but is underpinned by intricate philosophical ideas, especially those of twentieth century Existentialism and the related notion of absurdity. The study also investigates the interlaced functions of Adams’s fantasy and landscapes of alterity. Paradoxically, Adams’s fantastical creatures serve to illuminate the human condition and the follies and monstrosities that lurk at the heart of humanity. Not only does Adams’s fantasy mirror the maladies of twentieth century society, thus serving a satirical function, but it is also a mechanism for constructing meaning in the shape of alternative realities. Concepts related to alterity, such as simulation (Baudrillard), the structure of ‘reality’, dreaming (Descartes) and parallel universes are investigated as building blocks of Adams’s fantastic story space. Furthermore, the ideas of Sartre, Camus and other originators of Existentialism, a philosophy which considers the futility of existence and the compulsion to construct subjective meaning, are elucidated and explored in relation to Adams’s work. Existentialist concepts such as facticity and angst, as well as the Beckettian universe and the Theatre of the Absurd, are also discussed in the light of the Hitch Hiker series. Adams’s extensive satirical comment is also emphasised in this study. Adams’s satire does not merely castigate the evils of twentieth century society such as capitalism and bureaucracy, it also unmasks universal human vices such as pomposity and grandiosity, vices that are rooted in the rejection of objective morality. Although Adams comments on the folly at the heart of society, he also presents the reader with an alternative: the subjective reconstruction of one’s inner world in an attempt to spin individual webs of meaning from the nothingness at the world’s core. This study also investigates the ambiguous concept of madness as a subjective reality born of the necessity to construct meaning, and analyses Adams’s alternative landscapes based on the suggestion that ‘much madness is divinest sense’ (Emily Dickenson, in Ferguson et al., 1996: 1015). / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / English / MA / unrestricted
