. / In the production of hybrid seed of summer squash, flowering may not coincide, even when programming the sowing of the parentals. In breeding programs the delay of a few days may result in significant losses of some crossings. It was aimed to study forms of storage of staminate flowers of summer squash cultivar Piramoita for subsequent crossing and seed production, because pollen storage in cucurbits is unviable. The experiment was carried out in Campo Grande (MS), from August to December, 2001. Treatments (time of storage and substance-dilutions) were applied when 40% of the plants initiated flowering (November). Recently-open staminate flowers were harvested, stalks were standardized lengthwise (± 10cm) and dipped (± 3cm basal) in beckers containing the substance-dilutions (water, aluminum sulfate 25mgL-1 and 50mgL-1, sucrose 25gL-1, 50gL-1 and 75gL-1). Two standards were used: recently-harvested flowers (without any treatment) and natural pollination (insects), where the flowers were available to the visit of the insects in the same days as the pollinations were accomplished and all other flowers were eliminated. Flowers were stored for one or two days, at room temperature (±25ºC) or in the refrigerator (±8ºC). The selected pistillate flowers were bagged in “pre-anthesis”, in the afternoon previous to the crossing and again after the pollination. In each plant, only one cross was made. In the natural pollination, also only one flower in each plant was left “available” to the insects... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below).

Aftermath of a summer art institute : a case studyKreuger, Barbara January 1991 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of a University summer institute, and to determine whether the participants felt it had changed their ways of teaching art, brought them greater success or encouraged them to share ideas about art education. This research also examined what factors are necessary for creating change for teachers and questioned whether a University institute would be able to provide enough of those factors to induce change.
An investigation of the literature in the area of curriculum change revealed that teachers require a great deal of support and an extensive amount of time for change to occur. A University course such as the Institute cannot provide much support or time.
Through questionnaires, interviews, and additional information provided through a recall session conducted with the participants of the institute, it was possible to determine that for the majority of participants there was a perception that their art classes had undergone change and achieved greater success. For some of the participants the Institute had also caused them to share more information about art education with colleagues.
For some, this change was extensive and for others less so but this study indicates that a University institute can make a significant contribution to effecting change for teachers. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

Summer Bridge for Student Athletes: A Comparison of Effects on Special Admit and General Admit Student AchievementOng, Laura Swee 01 August 2018 (has links)
This study was an investigation of academic outcomes for student athletes who did or did not participate in an athlete-specific freshman Summer Bridge program in a private Division I university in the western United States. Analysis of data across five years yielded results regarding fall, winter, and cumulative GPA; and progress toward degree for special admit and general admit student athletes. Data indicate significant differences between groups in terms of GPA and progress toward degree for the first year. However, there were no significant main interaction between time and group as measured by differential slopes over time according to group membership in terms of semester GPA. The discussion includes application for practice and further research.
