Perceived Dangerousness of the Job and Well-Being Among Correctional Officers: the Role of Perceived Stress and Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (FSSB)Meier, David Duane 30 July 2013 (has links)
Occupational stress has become a world-wide epidemic exacting severe tolls on both businesses and employees alike. Of all the workplace stressors, the perceived dangerousness of one's job is ever present within the occupation of corrections. The current study examined the mediating process of perceived stress on the relationship between perceived dangerousness of the job and the negative employee well-being outcomes of work-family conflict and symptoms of psychological distress, as well as the moderating effects of family supportive supervisor behaviors on this process. As part of a larger study, survey data were collected from 1,370 state correctional officers. It was hypothesized that perceived stress would fully mediate the relationship between perceived dangerousness of job and the negative well-being outcomes and that family supportive supervisor behaviors would moderate this mediation such that increased levels of family supportive supervisor behaviors would mitigate the negative well-being outcomes. The mediation hypotheses were not found to be supported. However, family supportive supervisor behaviors were found to moderate the relationship between perceived dangerousness of the job and work-to-family conflict. Additionally, family supportive supervisor behaviors were found to moderate the relationship between perceived stress and physical symptoms of psychological distress.

Development of a curriculum in supervision for A.C.T. TAFECameron, Patricia, n/a January 1985 (has links)
It had been apparent for some time that the supervision course taught by
ACT TAFE (based on the 1970 NSW curriculum) was not meeting the training
needs of ACT supervisors. This study is a detailed account of how the
new curriculum in supervision was developed.
The first section is a literature survey directed toward the most
relevant problems concerning supervision: the duties and
responsibilities of supervisors and their training. The literature
shows how the perception of a supervisor has changed from that of a
craftsman in charge of men in an assembly plant to that of a first-line
or sub-manager, technical specialist or workgroup coordinator working
with men and women in white collar occupations. Training research was
surveyed in the areas of training needs assessment, curriculum,
management development and evaluation. From these and further studies
specifically on supervision courses in TAFE (the only post-secondary
provider of training in this area), it was concluded that its piecemeal
and haphazardly developed courses were unlikely to fulfil supervisors'
training needs or gain the acceptance of employers.
The second part of the field study is a survey of the opinions of ACT
supervision students, supervisors and managers on their training needs
in supervision. The techniques used were structured interviews with
students and a postal questionnaire to managers and supervisors in the
public and private sectors.
Finally, the curriculum was formulated using results from the two
previous sections. Although the response rate from the postal survey
was low, the results were nevertheless useful, confirming the data
obtained from past students. In the final analysis, three factors
contributed almost equally to the design of the curriculum: ideas and
findings in the literature, the surveys, and my own experience as a
supervisor, manager and teacher.

Perceived Roles, Resposibilities And Challenges Of Ct' / s In The Procedure Of Teaching Practice Course In PracticumSaglam, Gulderen 01 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This research study aims to investigate how cooperating teachers (CTs) in Partnership Schools working with pre-service teachers (PTs) from Universities in Ankara and Bursa reflect on challenges they face according to their own perceived roles and responsibilities in the process of implementing their complicated and demanding work to contribute to pre-service teacher training in schools. The present study specifically focuses on cooperating teachers& / #8217 / perceived challenges in relation to the feedback process and their cooperation with pre-service teachers to fulfill their roles and responsibilities to understand the nature of cooperating teachers& / #8217 / work, and how such recognition and understanding could empower all the parties involved- cooperating teachers and pre-service teachers with the aim of making the school
experience more beneficial for pre-service teachers. The results of data collection show that CTs need further training in almost all aspects of their work directly related to the teaching learning environment in schools. Areas of their work that need improvement are also introduced, and recommendations to cope with challenges are presented.

An examination of information seeking tactics in professional relationshipsBailey-Hughes, Brenda January 1989 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which employees attempt to gain information about the relationship they have with their immediate supervisor. Uncertainty level and gender were predicted to be related variables. Prisbell and Andersen's uncertainty measurement scale, revised Baxter and Wilmot relational information-seeking tactics, and an original information-seeking frequency scale were utilized to examine 50 emergency service personnel on uncertainty level, frequency of information-seeking effort, and specific tactic utilization. Pearson product-moment correlations revealed no significant relationship between amount of uncertainty and frequency of information-seeking. Utilization of t-tests revealed no significant difference by gender in the frequency of information-seeking. The MANOVA results indicated no significant differences in the specific tactic utilization of males and females. However, Chi square values and univariate analyses identified the public presentation, joking, and hinting tactics as being used significantly more by males than females. It was recommended that research be continued in the area of working relationships. / Department of Speech Communication

An assessment of the effectiveness of management review as an ISO 14001:2004 continual improvement element : an Eskom distribution case study / Nokhuthala Deligence HlongwanaHlongwana, Nokhuthala Deligence January 2014 (has links)
Eskom Holdings SOC Limited (referred to as Eskom), a public state owned company, is
required to continually demonstrate environmental duty of care and report on its environmental
performance. In furthering its commitment to sustainable development and in line with
environmental compliance of its activities, Eskom is planning to have the Distribution Division
certified against the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004
environmental management system (EMS) standard by 2014. In general, management review
may quickly turn into a dry review of the items on the agenda, done only to show an auditor the
review was held. As such, the aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of management
reviews as one of the key continual improvement elements of the ISO 14001:2004
environmental management system within Eskom Distribution: Western Region.
This research has been designed to take place in three stages. These stages are planning,
execution and publication, and preparing the dissertation for marking. The research
methodology included a literature study on various national and international articles and
journals on EMSs that relate to environmental performance. The databases of Eskom
Distribution: Western Region ‒ i.e. the management review presentation results for the 2008/09,
2009/10 and 2010/11 financial years, key significant environmental aspects for the Technical
Service Centres (TSCs) and Minor/Major Engineering Works (MEW), key performance
indicators (KPIs), Risk Audit System (RAS) results, and results of the external EMS audit
conducted from 23–25 April 2007 were used for this research. Questionnaires were sent to the
TSCs’ senior supervisors and Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) management.
An analysis of the questionnaires completed by the TSC senior supervisors showed that all the
participants have seen an improvement in environmental performance due to annual
management reviews, except TSC11, who have not seen management review results.
It can be concluded from the results of the SHEQ management questionnaires that an
improvement (continual improvement as per the ISO 14001 requirement) was observed. The
improvements were identified through improved processes, improved gap analysis, increased
environmental awareness, and addressing risks.
Most of the ISO 14001:2004 requirements for the management review for all financial years
covered in this study were met. In terms of the objectives, targets and KPIs, Eskom Distribution:
Western Region performed effectively and most of the outcomes were implemented according
to the recommendations. Further, based on the external audit conducted from 23 to 25 April 2007, it is clear that Eskom
Distribution: Western Region conformed to the minimum requirements of the ISO 14001:2004
EMS. Their management reviews also met all requirements of the ISO 14001:2004 relating to
management review. This was proven by minutes of previous meetings that covered all the
necessary issues that were audited. Thus, the existence of management reviews contributed
towards ensuring that the ISO system was scrutinised and improved where it worked, and that
aspects that did not work well were removed. / M. Environmental Management, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
