The influence of job satisfaction on burnout amongst sales representatives

Hlungwani, Nyiko Tommy 31 May 2006 (has links)
Sales representatives play a critical role in the development and sustainability of their business through the selling of products and services. Burnout inclined stress caused by low job satisfaction could adversely affect business development and survival. This study thus investigated the influence of job satisfaction on burnout amongst medical sales representatives. Two measuring instruments were used namely the Smith, Hulin and Kendall (1969) Job descriptive index (JDI) and the Pines, Aronson and Kafry (1981) Burnout index (BI). This study was conducted amongst 139 sales representatives working for a generic pharmaceutical organisation. Through a literature study, job satisfaction and burnout were defined, and a link determined between the two constructs. An empirical study revealed the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout. The results indicated a negative correlation between job satisfaction and burnout. Conclusions and recommendations were made regarding the enhancement of job satisfaction and the management of burnout among sales representatives. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

Perceptions of selected Namibian subject advisers on their role in supporting teaching and learning

Tjozongoro, Assaria Twiwane 14 August 2020 (has links)
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / The purpose of this interpretive study was to explore the perceptions of selected Namibian subject advisers on their role in supporting teaching and learning. There are limited studies on the roles of subject advisers in supporting instruction. Delivery of quality teaching and learning prompts subject advisers to support teachers. The study is important to build upon the body of literature on instructional support and how subject advisers elsewhere support instruction. International and national scholastic literature was interrogated to seek more insight into the research topic. This qualitative study was located within a phenomenological/interpretive paradigm. The study explored the purpose of subject advisory support, how teachers’ support needs are identified, the roles of subject advisers, character traits of subject advisers, formats of support used by subject advisers, and the challenges as well as support provided to subject advisers. The study was conducted at three Regional Offices of Education, Arts and Culture in Namibia and included ten subject advisers selected through purposive sampling. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Key findings emerged through the data analysis by identifying categories and themes. These findings emphasised that subject advisers understand the nature of instructional support differently. The findings revealed that subject advisers face challenges that make them less effective in teaching support. It was further evident that subject advisers receive limited support and that they need to be supported through training, provision of resources and reduction of workload. These conclusions and others informed the recommendations that are aimed at improving subject advisers’ practice. / Lolu cwaningo oluhlaziyayo beluhlose ukuthola imiqondo yesihloko sabaluleki bezifundo baseNamibia abakhethiwe ngendima yabo yokuxhasa uhlelo lokufundisa nokufunda. Perceptions and experiences of undergraduate nursing students of clinical supervision

Donough, Gabieba 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCur)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Differences were observed in clinical demonstration and assessment techniques of clinical supervisors involved with the supervision of undergraduate nursing students at an institution of higher education. These differing techniques displayed by the clinical supervisors may have implications for the standard of nursing care provided by the students and the throughput of these students. A qualitative approach with a descriptive design was applied to explore the perceptions and experiences of the undergraduate nursing students’ on clinical supervision. Nine (n=9) students were deliberately selected by means of purposive sampling from each year to participate in focus group interviews. Nine 1st year students, nine 2nd year students, nine 3rd year students and nine 4th year students respectively constituted the groups that were interviewed. Thus the total sample consisted of n=36 nursing students. Consent to conduct the study was obtained from the Health Research Ethical Committee at Stellenbosch University, as well the institution under study. Informed consent was obtained from all the participants. Data collection was completed by two trained fieldworkers who were not affiliated with the institution under study. The interviews were analysed through content analysis. Six themes emerged from the data. These included support, professionalism, realities of supervision, student preferences regarding supervisors, experiences that relate to abusive behaviour and the clinical supervision process. The findings indicated negative and positive experiences on clinical supervision. Recommendations were proposed to enhance clinical supervision and the learning experiences of student nurses. Key words: Clinical supervision, undergraduate nursing, clinical supervisor, clinical practice, differing techniques.

Unknown Date (has links)

Intervenções do orientador na escrita: efeitos na formação do futuro pesquisador / Supervisors interventions in writing: effects in the researcher training

Andrade, Emari 25 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis discusses the researcher training and the contemporary academic writing. It aims to demonstrate the effects of the writing constitution resulting from the work of a supervisor committed to researchers training. The research question that guides this work is: In the context of the university, what are the effects of the interventions carried out by a supervisor in order to help a researcher in training to write a work that could contribute towards his field and be legitimated by the scientific community due its clearness, adequacy and thorough writing? In order to infer that, this thesis has taken as object the textual interventions carried out by a supervisor in the versions that preceded four masters dissertations from the field of education. The corpus consists of 1040 manuscripts, related to academic writing constitution, like dissertations chapters, final assignments from the subjects and events attended by the informers, including notes or emails exchanged between them and their supervisor and theoretical texts read during their studies. This material is part of the collective project Writing Movements database organized by the Group of Studies and Research, Writing Production and Psychoanalysis (In Portuguese, Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa Produção Escrita e Psicanálise GEPPEP). In order to study the effects of teaching guidance, firstly, we have inferred the master researchers main difficulties when writing in the academic context and, after, we have categorized the effects purposes provided by the interventions throughout the versions written by the informers. From a theoretical framework that connected Education and Lacanian psychoanalysis, it is possible to establish that throughout the training, the researchers went through subjective changes, which resulted in three aspects: 1) relationship to knowledge referring to the shift from a passive attitude toward the work elaboration to a more active one; 2) intellectual elaboration relating to the dislocation from the predominance of lack of reasoning to the consideration of the others perspective when measuring the possible meaning effects of the texts they wrote; and 3) text elaboration referring to a concern of producing results to lexical, syntactic or stylistic choices. Mainly, the supervisor helped the researchers distinguishing a common sense based writing from the one founded in the scientific discourse. Therefore, we have concluded that a formation in the university, depending on the way it is conducted and experienced by the researcher, may lead the ones who take advantage of that to undergo the way he relates himself to his word and knowledge.

Discrete Event System Modeling Of Demand Responsive Transportation Systems Operating In Real Time

Yankov, Daniel Y 18 March 2008 (has links)
Demand responsive transportation is a variable route service of passengers or freight from specific origin(s) to destination(s) in response to the request of users. Operational planning of DRT system encompasses the methods to provide efficient service to the passengers and to the system operators. These methods cover the assignments of vehicles to transportation requests and vehicle routings under various constraints such as environmental conditions, traffic and service limitations. Advances in the information and communication technologies, such as the Internet, mobile communication devices, GIS, GPS, Intelligent Transportation Systems have led to a significantly complex and highly dynamical decision making environment. Recent approaches to DRT operational planning are based on "closed information loop" to achieve a higher level of automation, increased flexibility and efficiency. Intelligent and effective use of the available information in such a complex decision making environment requires the application of formal modeling and control approaches, which are robust, modular and computationally efficient. In this study, DRT systems are modeled as Discrete Event Systems using Finite Automata formalism and DRT real time control is addressed using Supervisory Control Theory. Two application scenarios are considered; the first is based on air-charter service and illustrates uncontrolled system model and operational specification synthesis. The automatic synthesis of centralized and modular supervisors is demonstrated. The second scenario is a mission critical application based on emergency evacuation problem. Decentralized supervisory control architecture suitable for accommodating the real-time contingencies is presented. Conditions for parallel computation of local supervisors are specified and the computational advantages of alternative supervisory control architectures are discussed. Discrete event system modeling and supervisory control theory are well established and powerful mathematical tools. In this dissertation, they are shown to be suitable for expressing the modeling and control requirements of complex and dynamic applications in DRT. The modeling and control approaches described herein, coupled with the mature body of research literature in Discrete Event Systems and Supervisory Control Theory, facilitate logical analysis of these complex systems and provide the necessary framework for development of intelligent decision making tools for real time operational planning and control in a broad range of DRT applications.

Dynamic Job Satisfaction Shifts: Implications for Manager Behavior and Crossover to Employees

Caughlin, David Ellis 21 May 2015 (has links)
In this dissertation, I investigated job satisfaction from a dynamic perspective. Specifically, I integrated the momentum model of job satisfaction with the affective shift model and crossover theory in an effort to move beyond traditional, static conceptions of job satisfaction and other constructs. Recent research and theoretical development has focused on the meaning of job satisfaction change for workers and how such change impacts their decisions to leave an organization. To extend this line of inquiry, I posited hypotheses pertaining to: (a) job satisfaction change with respect to positive work behavior (i.e., organizational citizenship behavior, family-supportive supervisor behavior); (b) the potential moderating effect of changes in negative work events (i.e., job demands, interpersonal conflict) on the relation between job satisfaction change and turnover intentions change and positive work behavior; and (c) the crossover of job satisfaction change from managers to employees and the potential underlying behavioral mechanisms. An archival dataset collected by the Work, Family & Health Network was used to investigate the aforementioned phenomena. Data were collected at two time points with a six-month interval via face-to-face computer-assisted personal interviews from individuals working at 30 facilities from a U.S. extended-healthcare organization. In total, data from 184 managers and 1,524 of their employees were used to test hypotheses. Data were analyzed using multilevel structural equation modeling. In an extension of the momentum model, I found that managers’ job satisfaction change positively related to changes in employee reports of their FSSB; in addition, I replicated prior findings in which job satisfaction change negatively related to turnover intentions change. Furthermore, based on my integration of the momentum model and the affective shift model, I tested the proposition that changes in negative work events (i.e., job demands, interpersonal conflict) would moderate the relationship between changes in job satisfaction and focal outcomes. For certain operationalizations of negative work events, hypothesis testing revealed significant interactions with respect to changes in all three outcomes: turnover intentions, OCB, and FSSB. The form of the interactions, however, deviated from my predictions for models including changes in turnover intentions and OCB, although my predictions were supported for models including changes in FSSB. In my integration of the momentum model and crossover theory, the associated hypotheses were met with very limited support. Specifically, the relationship between managers' job satisfaction change and employees' job satisfaction change approached significance, but the relationship between managers' level of job satisfaction and their employees' subsequent level of job satisfaction did not receive support. Similarly, the proposed mediational mechanisms (i.e., managers' OCB and FSSB) of these crossover relations went unsupported. In sum, while my contributions to the momentum model and the affective shift model were notable, my proposed integration of the momentum model and crossover theory was met with limited support. Overall, findings from this dissertation yield important implications for both theory and practice, as they may draw more attention to changes in job satisfaction, as well as the potentially beneficial role of changes in perceived negative work events.
