Comparison of plot survey and distance sampling as pellet group counts for deer in Sweden

Eckervall, Anneli January 2008 (has links)
Wildlife management deals with problems concerning sustainable harvest, conservation of threatened species and adjustment of wildlife populations to levels acceptable to for instance forestry, agriculture, traffic and conservation interests. A detailed knowledge of the population is then required. It is therefore important to develop reliable and cost-efficient survey methods. The purpose of this study was to test the distance sampling method where objects are observed while walking along a line, as a way of counting deer pellet groups and to compare the results with ordinary plot surveys. The inventory speed for distance sampling increases with increasing amount of droppings/km2. The amount of droppings seems to have little or no effect on the inventory speed of the plot survey method. Therefore the plot survey method could be a better alternative than the distance sampling method when the densities of droppings are high and vice versa. When comparing the two methods estimates of animal densities with data (orally) from game managers based on other surveys and flying observations and estimations in the different areas, both methods showed too low density for red deer in Valinge. This indicates that the supplementary feeding seem to have an effect on the results of red deer density for both methods.

Nedläggningen av NCB i Köpmanholmen : en studie av de hushållsekonomiska konsekvenserna / The close-down of NCB in Köpmanholmen : a study of the consequenses for household economy

Nygren, Lennart January 1986 (has links)
This study deals with the consequences for household economy in connection with unemployment. Various mechanisms that influence the relationship between unemployment and the reception of supplementary benefits are described and analyzed. The labour market, the social insurance system and the adjustment strategies of families are fields of particular interest to this study. The economic systems of support that have developed are dominated by the unemployment insurance. Those, whose unemployment benefits have ceased or who for some other reason are not covered by the insurance, have to resort to supplementary benefits. The differences in level between working, receiving unemployment benefits or supplementary benefits can be described in terms of a scale of income. The aspect of the scale varies strongly between different types of families. The empirical point of reference for this dissertation is the close-down of a pulp industry (Ncb in Köpmanholmen 130 km south of Umeå in the north of Sweden). The development of those made redundant has been studied with regard to reception of supplementary benefits, income and adjustment strategies. Data about income and supplementary benefits were collected from registers at the local tax charge office and the local administration of social services. 83 out of 444 households were interviewed about adjustment strategies. The close-down in question proved to be exceptional in many aspects. The expected "social catastrophe" never occured due to the economic upswing, raised unemployment benefits and ambitious labour market policy efforts, among other things. Only a very small minority of those made redundant have received supplementary benefits after the close-down. This has been the case although many of those made redundant have been removed from the open labour market with a subsequent lowering of their income level. Amongst those made redundant many different patterns of adjustment havè been observed. It appears that those who lack work after a couple of years after the close-down are often characterized by passivity, whereas those who have been employed are often characterized by activity. Finally the variation in patterns of adjustment can be seen as a social policy problem. Judging from the results a combination of the institutional and marginal social policy strategies would be desirable. Reform schemes can be suggested that are based on a wish to supplement the preventive and institutional social policy with selective features where the adjustment strategies of families should provide an important resource potential. / digitalisering@umu

Contributions to the multivariate Analysis of Marine Environmental Monitoring

Graffelman, Jan 12 September 2000 (has links)
The thesis parts from the view that statistics starts with data, and starts by introducing the data sets studied: marine benthic species counts and chemical measurements made at a set of sites in the Norwegian Ekofisk oil field, with replicates and annually repeated. An introductory chapter details the sampling procedure and shows with reliability calculations that the (transformed) chemical variables have excellent reliability, whereas the biological variables have poor reliability, except for a small subset of abundant species. Transformed chemical variables are shown to be approximately normal. Bootstrap methods are used to assess whether the biological variables follow a Poisson distribution, and lead to the conclusion that the Poisson distribution must be rejected, except for rare species. A separate chapter details more work on the distribution of the species variables: truncated and zero-inflated Poisson distributions as well as Poisson mixtures are used in order to account for sparseness and overdispersion. Species are thought to respond to environmental variables, and regressions of the abundance of a few selected species onto chemical variables are reported. For rare species, logistic regression and Poisson regression are the tools considered, though there are problems of overdispersion. For abundant species, random coefficient models are needed in order to cope with intraclass correlation. The environmental variables, mainly heavy metals, are highly correlated, leading to multicollinearity problems. The next chapters use a multivariate approach, where all species data is now treated simultaneously. The theory of correspondence analysis is reviewed, and some theoretical results on this method are reported (bounds for singular values, centring matrices). An applied chapter discusses the correspondence analysis of the species data in detail, detects outliers, addresses stability issues, and considers different ways of stacking data matrices to obtain an integrated analysis of several years of data, and to decompose variation into a within-sites and between-sites component. More than 40 % of the total inertia is due to variation within stations. Principal components analysis is used to analyse the set of chemical variables. Attempts are made to integrate the analysis of the biological and chemical variables. A detailed theoretical development shows how continuous variables can be mapped in an optimal manner as supplementary vectors into a correspondence analysis biplot. Geometrical properties are worked out in detail, and measures for the quality of the display are given, whereas artificial data and data from the monitoring survey are used to illustrate the theory developed. The theory of display of supplementary variables in biplots is also worked out in detail for principal component analysis, with attention for the different types of scaling, and optimality of displayed correlations. A theoretical chapter follows that gives an in depth theoretical treatment of canonical correspondence analysis, (linearly constrained correspondence analysis, CCA for short) detailing many mathematical properties and aspects of this multivariate method, such as geometrical properties, biplots, use of generalized inverses, relationships with other methods, etc. Some applications of CCA to the survey data are dealt with in a separate chapter, with their interpretation and indication of the quality of the display of the different matrices involved in the analysis. Weighted principal component analysis of weighted averages is proposed as an alternative for CCA. This leads to a better display of the weighted averages of the species, and in the cases so far studied, also leads to biplots with a higher amount of explained variance for the environmental data. The thesis closes with a bibliography and outlines some suggestions for further research, such as a the generalization of canonical correlation analysis for working with singular covariance matrices, the use partial least squares methods to account for the excess of predictors, and data fusion problems to estimate missing biological data.

Utökat ballistiskt skydd mot finkalibriga projektiler på ytstridsfartyg

Westin, Jonas January 2009 (has links)
This paper investigates which technical solutions can improve ballistic protection against small arm projectiles onboard Swedish naval surface warships. Since the construction of the ship itself has a basic protection against projectiles, this will be described first. By improving the protection capability with extra protection (supplementary protection), the ship can successfully handle several new threats that come with new tasks while also improving its length of life. A study of advantages and disadvantages of different technical solutions will show which solutions are realistic ones. The ship will probably be equipped with different kind of materials because of the need of prioritized areas and surfaces onboard. Different materials will be a compromise between the ballistic protection ability and construction strength. / ChpT 08-10

Sensitivity Factors for Power Flow Tracing and Transmission Costs Allocation

CHANG, YA-CHIN 24 June 2002 (has links)
Under deregulated environments, transmission system is playing an increasingly vital role in the modern power markets. Despite the widespread experience of electricity restructuring during the past decade, important issues remain open about the best way to organize transmission to support reliability management and market trading. In the absence of an appropriate mechanism for the transmission services unbundling, it is unlikely to take into consideration the effects of power flows that diverge from the contract path. When individuals do not confront the respective responsibility for the transmission services, the market outcome will be inefficient. Allocations of transmission loss and costs to the market participants are essential for the transmission services unbundling. In this respect, two methods are proposed in this dissertation to provide technical and economical signals for the allocations. Based on circuit theory, the first method proposes a new procedure to trace the power flows on the transmission lines. Starting with the computation of an individual generator¡¦s or load¡¦s contributions to the line currents, the network is then decomposed into different networks. In each decomposed network, bus injections and line power flows are replaced by components related to only one generator or load. Based on the components of real power flow on the transmission lines, the allocations of transmission loss and supplementary cost can be easily performed. In the second method, AC power flow based injection shift distribution factors (ISDFs) are exploited for calculating generalized generation distribution factors (GGDFs) and generalized load distribution factors (GLDFs). GGDFs and GLDFs can be used to derive the components of the real powers on each transmission line contributed by the generators and loads. Three bus-oriented schemes are proposed to allocate the transmission loss. They are aimed to reduce the number of distribution factor computation and to reflect the activity in a competitive market. The reactive powers incurred on transmission lines due to the generators and loads are also derived using the reactive power distribution factors (RPDFs). Based on the components of complex power flow on the transmission lines, transmission cost allocation methods are proposed to charge the impacts of power transactions on the network. In order to take the service reliability into account the service charges consist of the components representing normal and the contingency states respectively.

Endring av rutiner som fremmer amming ved fødeenheteri Norge i perioden 1973-2009 / Changes in maternity ward routines regarding breastfeeding promotion in Norway during1973–2009

Ness Hansen, Mette January 2014 (has links)
Background: In concurrence with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, Norwegian health authorities recommend exclusive breastfeeding for infants during the first six months of life. Thereafter, recommendations suggest the continuance of breastfeeding for the first year of life, while introducing complementary food. Routines in maternity wards have a huge impact on the establishment and duration of breastfeeding. Consequently, supplemental nutrition that lacks medical justification may reduce exclusive breastfeeding, and associates with early termination of breastfeeding. Objective: This study aimed to examine changes in maternity ward routines with regard to breastfeeding, focusing particularly on the period between 1991 and 2009, immediately before and after Norway launched the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. In addition we examined the continuous registration of breastfeeding and the provision of breast-milk substitutes in the maternity units. Methods: Norway conducts a descriptive and cross-sectional National Breastfeeding Survey (Ammeundersøkelsen) every 9th year. The 53 head midwifes responded retrospectively to a questionnaire about their units’ breastfeeding practices the preceding year. In addition each unit registered breastfeeding and the use of breast milk substitutes for 20 healthy term infants, a total of 984 infants, prospectively. Results: Except for non-medical use of breast-milk substitutes, changes in breastfeeding routines mostly adhered to health authority recommendations. The registration of breastfeeding and breast-milk substitutes confirms our findings. Thirty percent of registered babies received breast-milk substitutes at least once during their stay in the maternity ward, and most received a substitute due to a non-medical reason. Conclusion: The use of breast-milk substitutes for non-medical reasons indicates that hospitals’ breastfeeding routines are not satisfactory. /
ISBN 978-91-86739-97-3

Enhancement Of The Bottoming Cycle In A Gas/steam Combined Cycle Power Plant

Safyel, Zerrin 01 February 2005 (has links) (PDF)
A combined cycle gas/steam power plant combines a gas turbine (topping cycle) with a steam power plant (bottoming cycle) through the use of a heat recovery steam generator. It uses the hot exhaust of the gas turbine to produce steam which is used to generate additional power in the steam power plant. The aim of this study is to establish the different bottoming cycle performances in terms of the main parameters of heat recovery steam generator and steam cycle for a chosen gas turbine cycle. First of all / for a single steam power cycle, effect of main cycle parameters on cycle performance are analyzed based on first law of thermodynamics. Also, case of existence of a reheater section in a steam cycle is evaluated. For a given gas turbine cycle, three different bottoming cycle configurations are chosen and parametric analysis are carried out based on energy analysis to see the effects of main cycle parameters on cycle performance. These are single pressure cycle, single pressure cycle with supplementary firing and dual pressure cycle. Also, effect of adding a single reheat to single pressure HRSG is evaluated. In single pressure cycle, HRSG generates steam at one pressure level. In dual pressure cycle, HRSG generates steam at two different pressure levels. i.e. high pressure and low pressure. In single pressure cycle with supplementary firing excess oxygen in exhaust gas is fired before entering HRSG by additional fuel input. So, temperature of exhaust gas entering the HRSG rises. Second law analysis is performed to able to see exergy distribution throughout the bottoming plant / furthermore second law efficiency values are obtained for single and dual pressure bottoming cycle configurations as well as basic steam power cycle with and without reheat. It is shown that maximum lost work due to irreversibility is in HRSG for a bottoming cycle in a single pressure gas / steam combined power plant and in boiler for a steam cycle alone. Comparing this with the single pressure cycle shows how the dual pressure cycle makes better use of the exhaust gas in the HRSG that dual pressure combined cycle has highest efficiency values and lost work due to irreversibility in -most significant component- HRSG can be lowered. And also it is shown that by extending the idea of reheat the moisture content is reduced and improvement in the performance is possible for high main steam pressures. Another observation is that supplementary firing increases the steam turbine output compared to the cycle without supplementary firing. The efficiency rises slightly for HP steam pressures higher than 14 MPa at HRSG exit, because the increased steam production also results in increased mass flows removing more energy from the exhaust gas.
