The Functions of White Nationalism Online: A Content Analysis of White Nationalist Thematic Discourse Surrounding the Eve Carson Homicide

Hunter, Stephanie Michelle 15 June 2009 (has links)
Extant literature on White Nationalism illustrate the myriad of social issues members of this racialist extremist group presently recognize as threatening the continuation of the white race and the preservation of white heritage (Swain 2002). One of these threats includes the high incidences of black-on-white violent crime within the United States. The March 2008 murder of UNC student body president Eve Carson, a 22 year-old white woman, by two young black males elicited heated discussion among White Nationalists. This paper analyzes, via content analysis, the thematic discourse surrounding Carson's homicide among White Nationalists on two popular White Nationalist websites. Functionalist theory guides this investigation in the attempt to illustrate how White Nationalists use scientific theories of criminality and government crime statistics as tools for justifying their racist beliefs. Also, this study intended to answer whether or not Carson's murder prompted an increase in online membership on the two websites used for the analysis. Moreover, this study sought to unearth thematic discourse which involved attacking whites who do not subscribe to White Nationalism; Eve Carson as either a sacred or profane symbol of whiteness; criticism of government policies, media, and the criminal justice system; evoking fear within the White Nationalist community; and calls for white solidarity and action. This analysis suggests that White Nationalists primarily used Carson's death as an opportunity to attack whites who do not subscribe to White Nationalist beliefs. / Master of Science

Regulating the intelligence system and oversight in the Hungarian constitutional democracy

Babos, Tibor 06 1900 (has links)
As Hungary made its transition to democracy, it had to overhaul its political, economic and defense system. The shift to a democratic form of government and free enterprise economy depends on a military that is firmly under civilian authority. Within the defense sector, the endurance of such a new democracy requires reforming its intelligence system. Hungary must choose the intelligence system that best serves its goals and needs. Despite the relatively strong success in implementing a democratic system, market economy and civilian control of the military since 1989, the transformation of its intelligence agencies is incomplete. The intelligence organizations holds fast to the old concept of an oversized, hyper bureaucratic intelligence system, and still lack appropriate, Western-type civil control and oversight. The system itself has been changing but not at the adequate speed and to some extent, it has kept the baggage of its past. Recent international terrorism also presents an opportunity to examine the Hungarian intelligence system and how it is structured, evaluating it for deficiencies and further develop what is working in the Hungarian security services. This analysis describes various other national intelligence organizations and examines intelligence oversight in the Hungarian constitutional democracy with recommendations for the possible guidelines for a new Hungarian intelligence system. / Hungarian Army author.

"Christ Divided: " White Supremacy As A Corporate Vice in the Body of Christ

Grimes, Kathleen M. January 2014 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James Keenan / Thesis advisor: Shawn Copeland / Despite its stated opposition to racism, the Catholic church in the United States remains both complicit in and shaped by the United States' persistent white supremacy. Largely due to the habituating effect of racial segregation, many of the church's practices have been turned into habits of white supremacy. For this reason, I contend, white supremacy operates in the church as a corporate vice, impeding the church's ability to achieve its identity as the body of Christ. This dissertation uncovers the Catholic parish as well as the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist as habits of white supremacy in order to propose a new approach to the problem of racial inequality and injustice, corporate re-habituation. The church must re-make itself while re-making the spaces it inhabits. As long as the Catholic church continues to reside in racially segregated space, it will continue to carry the vice of white supremacy in its body. In addition to re- drawing parochial borders in defiance of regnant patterns of racial segregation, the church must also work to dismantle both the hypersegregated black ghetto and the hyperprivileged white enclave. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College.
