Climate, topography and erosion in the Nepal HimalayasAndermann, Christoff 29 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis deals with the role of precipitation on erosion and landscape formation in the Nepal Himalayas. I investigate all successive steps involved in the erosion process: 1) Starting from the evaluation of precipitation datasets, 2) the transfer of precipitation to river discharge, 3) the mobilization and transport of material out of the mountain range, 4) and finally, erosion constrains over longer time-scales. I show that the dataset derived from the interpolation of rain gauge data performs best in the Himalayas. I demonstrate the importance of an until now unconsidered, major compartment of the Himalayan discharge cycle, which I identify as a fractured basement aquifer, and estimate the snow and ice melt contribution to the Himalayan rivers. Erosion rates calculated from suspended sediment fluxes and cosmogenic nuclide analysis range between 0.1 and 4 mm/yr. The rivers in the Nepal Himalayas are supply limited and the hillslopes as contributing source are transport limited. Last I show that over several thousand years erosion is not related with precipitation, but with relief.

Migration of Dredged Material Mounds: Predictions Based on Field Measurements of Waves, Currents, and Suspended Sediments, Brunswick, GAJohnson, Charley R. 20 April 2005 (has links)
The state of Georgia has two large ports that are accessed by way of navigable entrance channels. One of these ports is located in Brunswick, Georgia, and is maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers via periodic dredging. Sediments removed from the channel are typically pumped several miles offshore of Brunswick and placed in dredged material mounds, thus removing the sediment from the littoral cycle. This offshore placement, while being the most economically viable method, often negatively impacts the sediment budget of the coastal region and causes erosion downdrift of the channel, specifically along Jekyll Island. Onshore placement of the dredged material is not feasible due to increased associated costs and the high fraction of fines present in the material; thus, nearshore placement is a potentially viable alternative. Nearshore placement could possibly reduce erosion rates and provide protection to property from waves and storms. The USACE initiated a thorough field data collection campaign in 2002 to study the possibility of beneficial placement of dredged material. The author analyzed the existing data to predict the rate and direction of sediment movement away from an existing dredge mound. These predictions are then compared to bathymetric survey data in an effort to validate the results and methodologies used for sediment transport predictions. The ultimate goal is to use the results of this study along with numerical models currently being developed by the Corps to assess the possibility of sediments being transported toward the shore thus re-entering the littoral cycle and providing a benefit to the coast of Georgia.

The transport of suspensions in geological, industrial and biomedical applicationsOguntade, Babatunde Olufemi 05 October 2012 (has links)
Suspension flows in varied settings and at different concentrations of particles are studied theoretically using various modeling techniques. Particulate suspension flows are dispersion of particles in a continuous medium and their properties are a consequence of the interplay among hydrodynamic, buoyancy, interparticle and Brownian forces. The applicability of continuum modeling techniques to suspension flows at different particle concentration was assessed by studying systems at different time and length scales. The first two studies involve the use of modeling techniques that are valid in systems where the forces between particles are negligible, which is the case in dilute suspension flows. In the first study, the growth and progradation of deltaic geologic bodies from the sedimentation of particles from dilute turbidity currents is modeled using the shallow water equations or vertically averaged equations of motions coupled with a particle conservation equation. The shallow water model provides a basis for extracting grain size and depositional history information from seismic data. Next, the Navier-Stokes equations of motion and the convection-diffusion equation are used to model suspension flow in a biomedical application involving the flow and reaction of drug laden nanovectors in arteries. Results from this study are then used prescribe the best design parameters for optimal nanovector uptake at the desired sites within an artery. The third study involves the use of macroscopic two phase models to describe concentrated suspension flows where interparticle hydrodynamic forces cannot be neglected. The isotropic form of both the diffusion-flux and the suspension balance models are solved for a buoyant bidisperse pressure-driven flow system. The model predictions are found to compare fairly well with experimental results obtained previously in our laboratory. Finally, the power of discrete type models in connecting macroscopic observations to structural details is demonstrated by studying a system of aggregating colloidal particles via Brownian dynamics. The results from the simulations match experimental shear rheology and also provide a structural explanation for the observed macroscopic behavior of aging. / text

Βιολογική αναγωγή εξασθενούς χρωμίου / Biological reduction of hexavalent chromiumΜιχαηλίδης, Μιχαήλ 07 July 2015 (has links)
Chromium is one of the most serious pollutants of natural environment. The widespread industrial use of chromium leads to the release of large quantities of this metal in the environment, mainly in the form of hexavalent chromium. The hexavalent chromium, one of the most stable forms that we can notice in the environment, is soluble, highly toxic carcinogenic and mutagenic.
Contemporary water processing techniques of hexavalent chromium use micro-organisms, based on their metabolic and cellular activity. These procedures are more competitive, more effective and certainly financially affordable over the conventional physicochemical methods (chemical oxidation or reduction, ion exchange, filtration, electrochemical treatment, activated carbon adsorption, reverse osmosis and membrane technologies) as they show low energy demands, low maintenance cost and a smaller production of toxic mud. The biological reduction of hexavalent chromium requires the presence of an electron donor. This part is covered by organic carbon that is essential for carrying out the process.
The present thesis studied the treatment of liquid industrial chromate waste and the exploitation/utilization of agroindustrial byproducts/wastewaters (molasses - low cost and cheese whey- zero cost), using biological methods. At the beginning, experiments were conducted to optimize the reduction rate of mixed aerobic indigenous cultures in suspended growth reactors. Subsequently, the mixed culture was used for the biological reduction of the hexavalent chromium, in laboratory pilot scale fixed bed reactors, with plastic media, in various functional conditions targeting to the maximum system performance and the prevention of functional problems.
The biological system used in the present thesis constitutes a very effective method of processing industrial wastewater polluted with the toxic hexavalent chromium, by using affordable sources of carbon, such as molasses and cheese whey. This is a quite promising method, combining high removal rates with extremely low operating expenditure.

Effect of Illuviated Deposits on Infiltration Rates and Denitrification During Sewage Effluent RechargeMontgomery, Errol L., Korkosz, Emily, Dalton, Russell O., Jr., DeWitt, Ronald H. 16 April 1977 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1977 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 15-16, 1977, Las Vegas, Nevada / This study, conducted to determine the interrelationships among nitrogen transformations, infiltration rates, and development of the black layer found in the Santa Cruz River downstream of the Tucson (Arizona) sewage treatment plant, tested these interrelationships by percolating sewage effluent through clear acrylic columns uniformly packed with river sand for the first run, with gravel for the second run. Sewage effluent was continuously applied to three of the columns for 28 and 64 days during the first and second runs respectively. The remaining column was continuously flooded with tap water to serve as a control. Infiltration rates decreased rapidly upon application of the sewage, and within a few days a black layer developed, its thickness inversely related to the infiltration rate but not a cause of reduced flow, which is attributed, rather, to clogging of the surface by suspended solids. There was an average reduction in total nitrogen of 62.9% for the first run, and 15.9% for the second. The mechanisms of removal for run 1 were predominately absorption and denitrification, whereas the predominate removal mechanism in run 2 was filtering of organic nitrogen with adsorption and denitrification also playing an important role.

Paviršinių nuotekų charakterizavomo tyrimai metalo laužo įmonėje / Pre-investigation of stormwater quality at metals scrap processing PLANTŽimančiūtė, Jurgita 16 June 2005 (has links)
In the Master’s Thesis “Pre-investigation of Stormwater Quality at Metals Scrap Processing Plant” the literature review of 136 sources was performed with the focus on storm water pollution, physical and chemical properties of specific pollutants, origins of the pollution and pathways of the pollutants transport to the environment. Types of industrial storm water samples and sampling methodologies are described as well. Raprinfall data calculation are performed for the design of industrial storm water collection and treatment systems. The comprehensive analyses of storm water treatment are done. The experimental part of the work was carried out at the metal scrap processing industry with paved and unpaved aeries of the surfaces. During the research the industrial storm water screening characterisation was done at different locations of the whole territory. The treatment technology, including the sedimentation tank, retention tank and filtration trench was selected and calculated for the treatment of storm water of the investigated industry. The generalized conclusions and results of the work can be useful for state institutions, research institutions and the enterprises engaged in storm water management.

Sediment removal from urban runoff using seep berms and vegetative filtrationHamade, Firas Nadim 13 January 2014 (has links)
Previous field demonstration projects in metro-Atlanta have shown that seep berms, which are elongated sedimentation basins at the outlet of a disturbed land area, can provide high suspended sediment trap efficiencies with respect to coarse sediments on construction sites having drainage areas greater than five acres. Previous literature has shown that vegetative filter strips are efficient traps for fine suspended sediment in stormwater runoff. A combination of a seep berm and vegetative filter in series was studied in this thesis as an erosion control measure with quantification of its flow resistance and sediment removal efficiency. First, a field demonstration project was implemented to evaluate seep berms as a viable erosion control measure through a side-by-side comparison with the more commonly-used silt fences on construction sites with drainage areas less than five acres in metro Atlanta. High suspended sediment trap efficiencies were recorded for the seep berm on two separate sites, and the seep berm was shown to be superior to silt fences with respect to sediment control in the site runoff. Then a vegetative filter was studied in the laboratory in a specially-built flume for that purpose. The relationship between vegetative drag coefficient and various parameters reflecting flow conditions and vegetation density in steady, uniform open channel flow was studied in the flume. Both rigid, emergent vegetation and submerged, flexible vegetation were studied at two different plant densities. The application of porous media flow concepts to open channel flow through vegetation resulted in a collapse of data for vegetative drag coefficient for the various vegetation types and densities into a single relationship when plotted against vegetative stem Reynolds number. Point velocity and turbulence intensity profiles at different locations in the vegetative filter were recorded with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter to observe the turbulence structure of the flow and its effects on vegetative drag and settling of sediment. A sediment slurry consisting of a suspension of fine sand was fed into the flume, and an automated sampler was used to measure suspended sediment concentrations along the vegetative filter length for a series of discharges from which sediment flux and trap efficiency could be determined. Experimental data for trap efficiency were plotted against a dimensionless settling efficiency for each type of vegetation and density. These relationships, along with the one developed for the coefficient of drag, were applied in a numerical design technique that allows designers to determine the flow depth, velocity and trap efficiency of a vegetative filter of known dimensions for a given flow rate, sediment grain size distribution, slope, and vegetation density. In a typical design example, the combined trap efficiency proved that a seep berm followed by a vegetative filter can be a very effective erosion control measure.

Chemical and physical characterization of aerosols from the exhaust emissions of motor vehiclesLim, McKenzie C. H. January 2007 (has links)
The number concentration and size distribution of particles in Brisbane have been studied extensively by the researchers at The International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health, Queensland University of Technology (Morawska et al., 1998, 1999a, 1999b). However, the comprehensive studies of chemical compositions of atmospheric particles, especially with regard to the two main classes of pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and trace elements), that are usually of environmental and health interest, have not been fully undertaken. Therefore, this thesis presents detailed information on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and elemental compositions of vehicle exhausts and of urban air in Brisbane. The levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and elements in three of Brisbane's urban sites (Queensland University of Technology, Woolloongabba and ANZ stadium sites) were measured. The most common PAHs found in all sites were naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene and chrysene while Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Si, Sn, Sr and Zn were the most common elements detected in the total suspended particles and fine particle (PM2.5). With the aid of multivariate analysis techniques, several outcomes were obtained. For example: -- Major human activities such as vehicular and industrial sources were the most contributing pollution sources in Brisbane. However, these two sources have different influential strength on the compositions of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and trace inorganic elements found in the urban air. -- Woolloongabba bus platform was the most polluted site on the basis of the elemental and PAH compositions in its air samples while QUT site was the worst polluted site in terms of PM2.5 elemental contents. These results demonstrated that the impact of traffic related pollutants on Brisbane's urban air is significant. This led to the investigations of the direct emissions of pollutants from exhaust vehicular source in the second part of this research work. The exhaust studies included the investigations of PAHs, trace inorganic elements and particles. At the time of the study, the majority of vehicles in Brisbane used low sulfur diesel (LSD) fuel or unleaded petrol (ULP). However, the importance of vehicles using ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is constantly growing. Therefore, the exhaust emission studies on chassis dynamometer from heavy duty non-catalyst-equipped buses powered by LSD and ULSD with 500 ppm and 50 ppm sulfur contents respectively as well as passenger cars powered by ULP and LPG were explored. The outcomes of such studies are summarized as follows: -- Naphthalene, acenaphthene, acenaphthylene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluorene, fluoranthene and pyrene were frequently emitted by the buses powered by LSD and ULSD. However, buses powered by ULSD emitted 91% less PAHs than those powered by LSD. On the other hand, Mg, Ca, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ti, Ni, Pb, Be, P, Se, Ti and Ge were found in measurable quantities in the exhaust of the buses. The emissions of the elements were found to be strongly influenced by the engine driving conditions of the buses and fuel parameters such as sulfur content, fuel density and cetane index. -- Naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo(a)anthracene and benzo(b)fluoranthene were predominantly emitted by ULP and LPG cars. On the average, the total emission factors of PAHs from LPG cars were generally lower than those of ULP cars, but given the large variations in the emission factors of cars powered by the same type of fuel, differences in the emission factors from both car types were statistically insignificant. In general, platinum group elements and many other elements were found in the exhausts of cars powered by both fuels. Emissions of inorganic elements from the cars were dependent on the type and the mileage of the cars. For example, ULP cars generally emitted higher levels of Cu, Mg, Al and Zn while LPG cars emitted higher level of V. In addition, cars with higher mileages were associated with higher emissions of the major elements (Zn, Al, Fe, V and Cu). -- Buses powered by ULSD usually emitted fewer particles, which were generally 31% to 59% lower than those emitted by LSD powered buses. Similarly, cars powered by LPG emitted less particles from those powered by ULP fuel. However, more nanoparticles (those with aerodynamic diameters of less than 50 nm) were emitted by LPG powered cars than their ULP counterparts. Health effect assessment of the exhaust PAHs was evaluated in terms of benzo(a)pyrene toxicity equivalent (BAPeq). The potential toxicities of PAHs emitted by ULSD powered buses were generally lower than those emitted by their LSD counterparts. A similar trend with lower emissions of PAHs from LPG cars than from ULP cars was observed when otherwise identical passenger cars were powered by LPG and ULP fuels. In summary, this thesis has shown that the majority of airborne particles found around Brisbane have anthropogenic origins, particularly vehicle emissions, and that fuel or lubricant formulations and engine operating conditions play important roles in the physical and chemical characteristics of pollutants emitted by vehicles. The implications of these results on worldwide strategies to reduce the environmental and health effects of particles emitted by motor vehicles were discussed. In this regard, direct emission measurements from vehicles powered by LSD, ULSD, ULP and LPG unveiled the relative environmental benefits associated with the use of ULSD in place of LSD to power diesel engines, and of LPG in place of ULP to power passenger cars.

Characterization and sources of atmospheric particles in different population density environments / Πηγές και χαρακτηρισμός ατμοσφαιρικών σωματιδίων σε περιοχές διαφορετικής πυκνότητος πληθυσμούΠικριδάς, Μιχαήλ 06 December 2013 (has links)
In order to reduce uncertainty of atmospheric particle emissions and to examine the mechanism of new particle formation from precursor gases, measurements were conducted in a megacity (Paris, France), an urban area (Patras, Greece) and a remote location (Finokalia, Greece). At Finokalia, the composition of particles with diameter smaller than 1 μm (PM1) depended on air mass origin. The highest concentrations, and most frequent, were observed when air masses were coming from Europe. Organic aerosol was found to be 80% water soluble and the increased organic to elemental carbon ratio correlated with ozone concentration. These findings indicate that particulate matter (PM) at Finokalia was not emitted near the site but was transported from source regions hunderd of kilometers away and thus the area can be considered as a background of Europe. At Finokalia, atmospheric nucleation was observed more frequently during winter when sunlight intensity was below average and favored by air masses that crossed land before reaching the site. This behavior was explained by ammonia involvement in the nucleation process. PM1 was mainly acidic during summer and consumed all available ammonia, contrary to winter when, due to the lower sunlight intensity, particles were neutral and ammonia was available. During both seasons nucleation would only occur if particles were neutral which resulted in higher frequency of events during winter. Air masses that crossed land before reaching the site were enriched with ammonia, thus it was more likely for nucleation to occur. Number size distributions were monitored in Paris, France at fixed and mobile ground stations along with airborne measurements. The Paris plume was identified at a distance of at least 200 km from the city center and the number concentration was found to increase even by a 3-fold when air masses crossed Paris. During summer nucleation was observed approximately half of the campaign days; when the condensational sink was lower than average contrary to winter when no event was identified due to higher sink. Increased number concentration was observed at an altitude outside of the Paris plume simultaneously with new particle formation observed on the ground and was attributed to that phenomenon. At Patras, the legislated by E.U. daily PM10 standards were found to be violated. Exceedances were more frequent (58 of a total of 75) during the colder months (October to March) of the year. The warmer months (April to September) 80% of the PM2.5 was transported from other areas. Contrary during the colder months the contribution of transported PM reduced to 70% during autumn and 50% during winter, when the highest concentrations were observed on average. Local traffic contributed approximately 15% during winter and the remaining 35% was primarily due to domestic heating. PM2.5 and PM1 concentrations were found to exceed 100 μg m-3 on several occasions during nighttime due to domestic heating, either diesel or biomass combustion. Potassium, a tracer of biomass combustion, correlated well (R2=0.79) with PM2.5 during winter indicating a biomass source. Potassium concentrations were higher within the urban premises than a rural area located 36 km away from the city, indicating that at least a portion of the biomass combustion related PM2.5 were emitted locally.

Previous issue date: 2015-01-29 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / Three different classes of emerging contaminants were analyzed in surface water samples, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments from the Jundiaí River Basin - SP. The hormones 17-β-estradiol and 17-α-ethinylestradiol were the only compounds that were not detected in the matrices studied. Caffeine was the compound detected with the highest concentrations for water samples, with values up to 25000 μg/L, while in sediment samples and MPS, triclosan was the compound that had the highest concentrations, with 0.90 μg/g 79.1 g/g, respectively. Other compounds more often detected included atenolol, carbamazepine, diclofenac, propranolol and triclosan, with mean concentrations up to 17 ng/L in samples from Piraí Creek and greater than 120 ng/L for samples from Jundiaí River. A seasonal effect was observed in the concentrations of the compounds and the higher values for all of these were obtained for samples from a sampling point located downstream of a sewage treatment plant. It was found a high correlation between the concentrations of detected compounds and the electrical conductivity, which allowed suggesting the use of new contamination markers by sewage. The occurrence of studied compounds was widespread among samples from Rio Jundiaí, showing the high level of environmental impact to which this water body is exposed.
