Gothic Elements in Sylvia Plath¡¦s Poetry

Fang, Yung 09 January 2004 (has links)
Several of Sylvia Plath¡¦s poems are associated with the term ¡§Gothic¡¨ by critics. By examining how some conventional Gothic literary devices are used and how the feeling of terror is evoked in Plath¡¦s poetry, I shall try to prove the close correspondence between the Gothic literature and Sylvia Plath¡¦s poetry in this thesis. Then, I shall proceed to assert Plath¡¦s orthodoxy in the Gothic literature and discuss her uniqueness in the Gothic tradition.

The significance of mouth imagery in the poetry of Sylvia Plath

Moore, Jayme E. January 1989 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to examine the mouth imagery (images of eating, tasting, swallowing, and devouring) in the poetry of Sylvia Plath in terms of its meaning of Plath's art. An examination of Plath's Collected Poems reveals that both the prevalence and specific nature of the mouth imagery make it a significant part of her poetic vision. The mouth imagery differs from the other threatening imagery in Plath's poems because, unlike the threat of death presented by the moon or sea, the mouth imagery describes a threat humans cannot detach themselves from; they must contribute to the "gross eating game." Because existence depends upon consuming food, and new life builds upon decay, the threat represented by the mouth imagery is hoplesslessly recognized as necessary by its victims in Plath's poems. The mouth imagery expresses the paradox in the interdependence of life and death through metaphors which convey a sense of threat as well as necessity. / Department of English

Sylvia Plath is a twentieth-century North-American writer, mainly known by her poetry and her early suicide. In 1963, she publishes her only novel, The Bell Jar, in which she tells the story of Esther Greenwood, a young American woman from the 1950’s who finds herself in a self-annihilation path when confronted by the social rules imposed by the patriarchal ideology, which tries to stop her from assuming her true self and developing all her potentialities. The aim of this work is to understand in what way the writer, through the actualization of the concept of subtext in female authorship to the twentieth century, employs the theme of female subject disintegration as a resistance strategy to patriarchy. For this purpose, we use Virginia Woolf’s writings on the Angel in the House’s ideal, from her essay “Professions for Women” (1942); Gilbert and Gubar’s writings on the literature of female authorship, from their work The Madwoman in the Attic (1979); and Elaine Showalter’s writings on the double-voiced discourse employed by women writers, from her essays “Towards a Feminist Poetics” (1979), and “Feminism Criticism in the Wilderness” (1981). From the analysis of the novel, we aim to show in which way Plath exposes the devastating effects of the patriarchal ideology on women’s bodies and minds.

Aspects of identity : poet, persona and performance in Sylvia Plath's Ariel.

Esterhuizen, Leigh Caron. January 2010 (has links)
Female identity in Sylvia Plath’s Ariel collection (first published in 1965) is a complex site of being and becoming within a 1950s culture of performance. From a twenty-first century perspective, this dissertation bridges traditional and contemporary readings of Plath and the Plath archive through a referencing of motifs such as celebrity, ‘the gaze’, ventriloquism and clothing. The inter-discursive approach used – literary, psychoanalytic, cultural – attempts to underline the ongoing significance of Plath’s place as a woman poet in literary studies. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.

La plasticité et la structure du chant de la fauvette à tête noire étudiées chez des populations migratrices et sédentaires / Plasticity And Structure Of The Blackcap Song Studied In Migratory And Sedentary Population

Linossier, Juliette 18 December 2015 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was to study the structure, function and plasticity over time of the song of a male adult bird, the blackcap Sylvia atricapilla. The influence of different migratory behaviors on the song characteristics, on the dialect maintenance and on learning has also been studied in two populations, a migratory one (represented by two groups in Paris) and a sedentary one (represented by 3 groups in Corsica). The song of this species consists of two parts with distinct sound characteristics, the warble and the whistle. Our playback experiments show that both parts trigger male territorial response. Such a song in two parts probably allows blackcaps to transmit different information for different audiences, close and distant, males and females. Genetic analyzes with microsatellites show no genetic structure of groups and populations. Nevertheless, we have shown the existence of micro-geographical variations in the composition of syllables and sequences of syllables in the whistle part. Although the turnover of individuals is higher among migrants than among sedentary populations, the two populations have similar syllables and phrases sharing within groups. However, migratory birds, compared to sedentary ones, have a syllable repertoire size twice as large and a repertoire of phrase sharing much smaller. The survey of sedentary individuals over several consecutive years has shown that the species show a vocal plasticity since a greater sharing of syllables and of phrases is observed intra year than between years within groups. Although individuals seem able to modify their songs every year, we didn’t succeed in showing with playback experiments in natural environment that adults males were able to learn new syllables or new phrases.

This American writer perpetrated suicide at the age of 30, after 2 attempts: the first at the age of 20, when in the university and the second at the age of 29, already married and mother of two young children. Although her literary production is considered by many as autobiography, in this search I have used only the diaries, handwritten and letters edited by Karen Kukil in The Journals of Sylvia Plath 1950 - 1962. From these registers I make psychoanalytic considerations based on the Freud s theory and Lacan s teaches. The interest of this theme succeeded from the clinic activities. I verify, and this constitutes my thesis, that in the melancholy, when faced with I m nothing, I m no more than rubbish , stated by Lacan, succeed from the conviction of the inefficiency or non existence of the Other s love, easily can lead in to the suicide. In the melancholy, the subject, faced with the foreclosure of the Name-of-the- Father, may find an imaginary supplying. However, towards the Lacan s node theory, the supplying of the foreclosure of the Name-of-the-Father may take place towards Sinthome / Esta tese é um estudo acerca do suicídio, por meio de Sylvia Plath.
