Toward Distributed At-scale Hybrid Network Test with Emulation and Simulation SymbiosisRong, Rong 28 September 2016 (has links)
In the past decade or so, significant advances were made in the field of Future Internet Architecture (FIA) design. Undoubtedly, the size of Future Internet will increase tremendously, and so will the complexity of its users’ behaviors. This advancement means most of future Internet applications and services can only achieve and demonstrate full potential on a large-scale basis. The development of network testbeds that can validate key design decisions and expose operational issues at scale is essential to FIA research. In conjunction with the development and advancement of FIA, cyber-infrastructure testbeds have also achieved remarkable progress. For meaningful network studies, it is indispensable to utilize cyber-infrastructure testbeds appropriately in order to obtain accurate experiment results. That said, existing current network experimentation is intrinsically deficient. The existing testbeds do not offer scalability, flexibility, and realism at the same time. This dissertation aims to construct a hybrid system of conducting at-scale network studies and experiments by exploiting the distributed computing ability of current testbeds.
First, this work presents a synchronization of parallel discrete event simulation that offers the simulation with transparent scalability and performance on various high-end computing platforms. The parallel simulator that we implement is configured so that it can self-adapt for the performance while running on supercomputers with disparate architectures. The simulator could be used to handle models of different sizes, varying modeling details, and different complexity levels.
Second, this works addresses the issue of researching network design and implementation realistically at scale, through the use of distributed cyber-infrastructure testbeds. An existing symbiotic approach is applied to integrate emulation with simulation so that they can overcome the limitations of physical setup. The symbiotic method is used to improve the capabilities of a specific emulator, Mininet. In this case, Mininet can be used to run applications directly on the virtual machines and software switches, with network connectivity represented by detailed simulation at scale. We also propose a method for using the symbiotic approach to coordinate separate Mininet instances, each representing a different set of the overlapping network flows. This approach provides a significant improvement to the scalability of the network experiments.

"Determinação de abundâncias químicas em simbióticas amarelas austrais" / Determination of chemical abundances in yellow symbiotic stars from the southern hemsiphereSilvia Ribeiro Calbo 09 June 2004 (has links)
The present work is a contribution to the study of chemical composition of southern symbiotic stars, scarcely studied in literature. We present a complete set of yellow southern symbiotic stars extracted from Belczynski. Some of the objects analyzed had no spectroscopic data in literature. The data were obtained using 1.6m telescope in LNA, Brazil and the IUE satelite database. The reddening was calculated from Hydrogen recombination lines. From the ratio fluxes of the lines of [OIII] and [NII] and a hypothetical electronic temperature of 12 000K (Nussbaumer) we estimated the eletronic density of the nebulae present in the symbiotic system. With this data plus the fluxes of lines observed we obtained the chemical abundances in symbiotic nebulae; C,N,O in U.V. and He, Ar, S, O and N in visible. The abundances of the yellow symbiotic stars were compared to planetary disc nebulae extracted from Pottasch, cefeids form Luck & Lambert, G, K and M giant abundances from Lambert & Ries, G and K dwarfs from Reddy et. al., M giants from Smith & Lambert, Ba star abundances from Smith, mild Ba stars type G8 and K3 from Berdygina, early R from Dominy, C stars form Lambert et. al. and M and S (MS)stars from Smith & Lambert. We can distinguish two types of yellow symbiotic groups. One group presents CN cycle products and is situated near the low metalicity and solar metalicity curve. The other group is found near the C/O=1 curve that is made of rich carbon objects (Schmid & Nussbaumer). The yellow symbiotic stars enriched in carbon are not univically asociated with Ba or early R stars. These two groups represent respectively the yellow s and d' symbiotics. The yellow symbiotic stars analyzed in this work confirm the model in which they would be AGB stars iluminated by some hot source radiation.

Volvo AbiskoVahtola, Antti January 2020 (has links)
Volvo Abisko is proposing the possibility to experience the Arctic wilderness and the surrounding nature in a responsible way. The author has been hiking in the north, every time asking - what if everybody could experience this? Would it be possible to get into the wild with minimal impact on the environment? What if you wouldn’t need the expertise, the knowledge, or even the equipment to get into the pristine nature and to interact with the untouched Arctic? Volvo Abisko is representing the dream of offering this experience for a broader audience. Abisko - Ábeskovvu in the Same language - is one of the oldest national parks in Northern Sweden, which has been home to the Sami who followed herds of wilds between the forest land and the mountains. Ábeskovvu - “the forest by the great water”, where “the great water” refers to Scandinavia’s largest mountain lake Torneträsk. There were several moral questions during the process - is it the right choice to encourage people to visit these pristine areas? If the goal is to reduce the impact on nature, is it the right choice to create a physical service in such a fragile region? During the research and process, the decision was to design something that people can physically visit. Even if the digital appliances open a lot of opportunities, such as virtual traveling by virtual reality, the author believes that the experience is ideal when the user can engage all the senses to feel the surrounding nature. The idea of proposing sustainable development through design, instead of restricting access from people to certain regions, was quiding the project during the way. The creative process followed the boundaries set by the research, and the seamless functionality of the whole service was the priority. Analog sketching was the primary tool to discover shapes, and exploring the form in 3D helped to understand the space and to make multiple objects to work as one. The design focus of this project is transportation as a service, which is applied to the growing Arctic tourism sector. The concept includes an electric vertical takeoff vehicle (eVTOL) and a cabin, which is designed to be used with the vehicle. The vehicle enables a safe and exciting journey into the wild, letting the users observe the environment from the bird’s perspective. Eventually, the vehicle can land on the cabin, which is designed to give shelter for the users to spend time in the wild - being a base for a hiking adventure or just an attractive place to spend a night in solitude.

The response of symbiotic performance, growth and yield of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. ) genotypes to phosphorus fertilizer rates and rhizobial inoculationMuthabi, Anza 12 August 2020 (has links)
MSCAGR (Plant Production) / Department of Plant Production / Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) is adapted to cool-seasons and its organs are of high nutritive value and serve as cheap sources of protein, especially in developing countries. Chickpea crop is mainly grown for human consumption, animal feed and for medicinal purposes. The introduction and promotion of chickpea to especially small-scale South African crop farmers has multiple objectives including the improvement of soil fertility. Small-scale farmer’s flounder to afford Nfertilizers, coupled with the challenges faced by programmes aimed at assisting them about soil fertility in their cropping fields that are still without enough N concentration to meet N demand. It is therefore important that other alternatives that can help improve the N status of soils be explored. The shoot δ13C is an indicator of WUE in C3 plants. However, shoot-WUE is affected by a variety of factors including genotypes, phosphorus fertilizer application and availability of native or introduced rhizobial bacteria. However, not much is known on whether application of phosphate fertilizer, seed inoculation with rhizobial strain affect the shoot C/N ratio of chickpea genotypes in South Africa. Therefore, field experiments were established at Thohoyandou and Syferkuil in Limpopo to assess the role of phosphorus fertilization and rhizobial inoculation on C assimilation, C/N ratio and shoot-WUE of chickpea genotypes. Field experiments were conducted during winter season in 2016 and 2017 (April to August). Treatments consisted of a factorial combination of two rates of phosphorus fertilizer (0 and 90 kg P ha-1 ), four desi chickpea genotypes (ACC#1, ACC#2, ACC#3 and ACC#5) and two rhizobial inoculation levels (bradyrhizobium strain and without rhizobial strain. In Thohoyandou, ACC#1 showed greater grain yield in 2016 and 2017. Which was associated with more branches and greater plant height. Furthermore, the interaction between genotypes, phosphorus fertilizer and rhizobial inoculation had significant effect on grain yield in 2016. ACC#1, 3 and 5 of chickpea genotypes fixed the most N compared to that of ACC#2. In addition, ACC#5 had the highest soil N-uptake in both seasons followed by ACC#3, while ACC#1 had the least value of soil N-uptake in both seasons.
Phosphorus fertilizer application increased the fixation of N by 36.8% (P≤0.01), and similarly in soil N-uptake by difference of 59.9% compared to control in 2016. Furthermore, rhizobial inoculation increased N-fixed in 2016 and soil N-uptake in both seasons. ACC#5 had the highest N fixed at phosphorus-fertilized with bradyrhizobuim across two locations in both seasons. ACC#5 depended more on soil N-uptake than fixing its own N as compared to ACC#1. N fixation differed across seasons; however, ACC#3 had greater N-fixed in both locations. Moreover, chickpea genotype that fixed more N had least δ15N. This finding indicates that N fixation is exhibited by the genotypes that depend less on δ15N, because N2 fixation is inhibited by high soil N concentration or δ15N. Furthermore, ACC#2 and ACC#3 had greater δ13C at Thohoyandou in 2017; chickpea genotypes had significant effect on δ13C at P≤0.05 at Thohoyandou, 2016. The results showed that ACC#1 with phosphorus fertilizer application and no bradyrhizobium strain showed greater δ13C. Also, δ13C increased with a decrease in N-fixed (r=.1000), this indicates that there was a functional relationship between plant WUE and N fixation in chickpea, probably because improved water use in legumes supports N fixation. / NRF

The legume-rhizobium interaction requires the infection of plant roots by rhizobia and the initiation of cell divisions in the root cortex. Cytokinins, a class of plant hormones acts trough a phosphotranfert signalling leading to the activation of Type-B Response Regulators(RRBs) which are transcription factors regulating the expression of cytokinins primary response genes. Phylogenetic analyses carried out indifferent legume species genomes showed anexpansion of the RRB genes family associated toan increase in non-canonical RRBs. In Medicago truncatula nodules, MtRRB3 is the most expressed RRB in roots and nodules. MtRRB3 islinked to nodulation as MtRRB3 RNAi silencedplants as well as rrb3 mutants display asignificant decrease of nodule number. Inaddition, the expression of the nodulation related genes Nodulation Signalling Pathway 2(MtNSP2) and Cell Cycle Switch 52A(MtCCS52A) is reduced in response to cytokininsin rrb3 mutants. The expression pattern of apMtRRB3-GUS fusion overlaps with thepMtNSP2-GUS and pMtCCS52A-GUS fusions in roots and nodules. Finally, ChIP-qPCR and protoplast trans-activation experiments showed that MtRRB3 can respectively interacts with and activate MtNSP2 and MtCCS52A promoters. This thesis have thus established molecular mechanisms associated to transcriptional regulations mediated by cytokinins during the legume symbiotic nitrogen-fixing nodulation.

During the course of their life cycle organisms are exposed to natural environment variations capable of inducing physiological, morphological and behaviour changes, thus a phenotypic plasticity. Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of a genotype to generate a new phenotype following exogeneous or endogeneous stress. Here, we investigated the phenotypic plasticity of the non-calcifying symbiotic cnidarian Anemonia viridis at multiple levels of structural complexity, in vivo and in vitro. In vivo, we determined the mechanisms behind the phenotypic plasticity under expected future climate change (i.e. ocean acidification and ocean warming). Our results show physiological changes in the inorganic carbon use of the sea anemone A. viridis exposed to high pCO2 during a long-term stress in natura or a short-term stress in controlled conditions. We then observed an equivalent decrease in carbonic anhydrase activity, a key enzyme of cnidarian carbon concentrating mechanisms. Also, we demonstrated that an increase in seawater temperature modified the response observed during a high pCO2 scenario. In vitro, we established a viable primary cell culture from regenerating tentacles of A. viridis. We determined the gastrodermal tissue origin of the cultivated cells and validated the use of this new tool to the in vitro study of stress response at the cellular level. The set-up of this powerful in vitro tool will open a multitude of perspectives for the study of cellular responses to exogeneous stress (as global change perturbations) and to endogeneous stress (as the symbiosis constraints experienced by symbiotic cnidarians)

Evidence for Multiple Functions of a Medicago Truncatula TransporterHuang, Ying-Sheng 12 1900 (has links)
Legumes play an important role in agriculture as major food sources for humans and as feed for animals. Bioavailable nitrogen is a limiting nutrient for crop growth. Legumes are important because they can form a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria called rhizobia that results in nitrogen-fixing root nodules. In this symbiosis, rhizobia provide nitrogen to the legumes and the legumes provide carbon sources to the rhizobia. The Medicago truncatula NPF1.7/NIP/LATD gene is essential for root nodule development and also for proper development of root architecture. Work in our lab on the MtNPF1.7/MtNIP/LATD gene has established that it encodes a nitrate transporter and strongly suggests it has another function. Mtnip-1/latd mutants have pleiotropic defects, which are only partially explained by defects in nitrate transport. MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD is a member of the large and diverse NPF/NRT1(PTR) transporter family. NPF/NRT1(PTR) members have been shown to transport other compounds in addition to nitrate: nitrite, amino acids, di- and tri-peptides, dicarboxylates, auxin, abscisic acid and glucosinolates. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the AtNPF6.3/NRT1.1( CHL1) transporter was shown to transport auxin as well as nitrate. Atchl1 mutants have defects in root architecture, which may be explained by defects in auxin transport and/or nitrate sensing. Considering the pleiotropic phenotypes observed in Mtnip-1/latd mutant plants, it is possible that MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD could have similar activity as AtNPF6.3/NRT1.1(CHL1). Experimental evidence shows that the MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD gene is able to restore nitrate-absent responsiveness defects of the Atchl1-5 mutant. The constitutive expression of MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD gene was able to partially, but not fully restore the wild-type phenotype in the Atchl1-5 mutant line in response to auxin and cytokinin. The constitutive expression of MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD gene affects the lateral root density of wild-type Col-0 plants differently in response to IAA in the presence of high (1mM) or low (0.1 mM) nitrate. MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD gene expression is not regulated by nitrate at the concentrations tested and MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD does not regulate the nitrate-responsive MtNRT2.1 gene. Mtnip-1 plants have an abnormal gravitropic root response implicating an auxin defect. Together with these results, MtNPF1.7/NIP/LATD is associated with nitrate and auxin; however, it does not act in a homologous fashion as AtNPF6.3/NRT1.1(CHL1) does in A. thaliana.

Molecular and Functional Characterization of Medicago Truncatula Npf17 GeneSalehin, Mohammad 12 1900 (has links)
Legumes are unique among plants for their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen with the help of soil bacteria rhizobia. Medicago truncatula is used as a model legume to study different aspects of symbiotic nitrogen fixation. M. truncatula, in association with its symbiotic partner Sinorhizobium meliloti, fix atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which the plant uses for amino acid biosynthesis and the bacteria get reduced photosynthate in return. M. truncatula NPF1.7 previously called MtNIP/LATD is required for symbiotic nitrogen fixing root nodule development and for normal root architecture. Mutations in MtNPF1.7 have defects in these processes. MtNPF1.7 encodes a member of the NPF family of transporters. Experimental results showing that MtNPF1.7 functioning as a high-affinity nitrate transporter are its expression restoring chlorate susceptibility to the Arabidopsis chl1-5 mutant and high nitrate transport in Xenopus laevis oocyte system. However, the weakest Mtnip-3 mutant allele also displays high-affinity nitrate transport in X. laevis oocytes and chlorate susceptibility to the Atchl1-5 mutant, suggesting that MtNPF1.7 might have another biochemical function. Experimental evidence shows that MtNPF1.7 also functions in hormone signaling. Constitutive expression of MtNPF1.7 in several species including M. truncatula results in plants with a robust growth phenotype. Using a synthetic auxin reporter, the presence of higher auxin in both the Mtnip-1 mutant and in M. truncatula plants constitutively expressing MtNPF1.7 was observed. Previous experiments showed MtNPF1.7 expression is hormone regulated and the MtNPF1.7 promoter is active in root and nodule meristems and in the vasculature. Two potential binding sites for an auxin response factors (ARFs) were found in the MtNPF1.7 promoter. Chromatin immunoprecipitation-qRT-PCR confirmed MtARF1 binding these sites. Mutating the MtARF1 binding sites increases MtNPF1.7 expression, suggesting a mechanism for auxin repression of MtNPF1.7. Consistent with these results, constitutive expression of an ARF in wild-type plants partially phenocopies Mtnip-1 mutants’ phenotypes.
