The Girl in the Wood FrockLing, Andrea Shin January 2007 (has links)
A GIRL, forced to marry her father after he sees her playing in his dead wife???s wedding gown, runs away wearing five dresses. Four dresses are of silk and they are beautiful. The last dress is of wood. It is in this dress that the girl escapes, throwing herself into the river to float away. A prince saves the girl but treats her badly, for she wears an ugly wood frock. Her suffering is eased at night when the girl takes off the wood dress and dances in her silk ones. The prince discovers the girl in the silk dresses and falls in love. They live happily ever after.
This thesis is based on a fairy tale in which a girl???s life is changed by what she wears. In Fair Maiden Wood clothing is a means to identity. Costume is what identifies this girl as her father???s new bride, and it reveals to the shallow prince who his true love is. It is through clothing that we identify the fairy tale. But more significantly, it is through clothing that the girl experiences the outside world. The girl lives through her wood frock ??? it is the vessel by which she escapes the threat of incest, it is the prison that disguises her beauty from the prince; it is her armor, her cage, her temporary home.
The wood frock becomes the girl???s first architecture, protecting and sheltering the girl in the most intimate manner, controlling her most immediate environment. But its role is not limited to enclosure; the wood dress also changes the girl???s experience of her surroundings, extending her bodily influence while also constraining it. The wood dress dictates how the girl moves, how much space she needs, how others see her, and how they treat her. It is an environment, elusively defined by the dialogue between her moving body and the surface of the wood shell surrounding her, which changes the girl???s quality of existence. In this in-between silhouette is a most potent, and poetic, form of architecture.
In my thesis I continue the story of the girl in the wood frock through the design of three of her five gowns. The gowns reference the work of designers such as Cristobal Balenciaga or Issey Miyake whose clothes, by virtue of their construction and materiality, affect wearer and observer in startling and profound fashion. Their garments show a symbiotic relationship between body and shell, where the shell is not simply a passive enclosure but a responsive and independent extension of the body. My dresses are made with this symbiosis in mind, and I use their (painstaking) construction in order to propose that in clothing is the potential to create spatial environments that change fundamental perceptions by filtering and extending the wearer???s experience of the world and her effect on it. These dresses and the spaces they create are unique. They are not costumes of the everyday, used to suppress sensation in order to function; instead they are of the special day, when the girl seeks to be stimulated, enlightened, and also saved. They are dresses of heightened awareness, integrating both sense and action within their shifting boundaries, shaping a dynamic, albeit fleeting, architecture.

Thorium–based fuel cycles : saving uranium in a 200 MWth pebble bed high temperature reactor / S.K. GintnerGintner, Stephan Konrad January 2010 (has links)
The predominant nuclear fuel used globally at present is uranium which is a finite resource. Thorium has been identified as an alternative nuclear fuel source that can be utilized in almost all existing uranium–based reactors and can significantly help in conserving limited uranium reserves. Furthermore, the elimination of proliferation risks associated with thorium–based fuel cycles is a key reason for re–evaluating the possible utilization of thorium in high temperature reactors. In addition to the many advantages that thorium–based fuel has over uranium–based fuel, there are vast thorium resources in the earth's crust that up until the present have not been exploited optimally.
This study focuses on determining the amount of uranium ore that can be saved using thorium as a nuclear fuel in HTR's. Four identical 200 MWth high temperature reactors are considered which make use of different fuel cycles. These fuel cycles range from the conventional uranium fuel cycle to a thorium–based fuel cycle in which no U–238 is present and have been simulated using the VSOP–A system of computer codes. This study also considers the effect that protactinium, an isotope that occurs in thorium–based fuel cycles, will have on the decay heat production in the case of a depressurized loss of coolant (DLOFC) accident. / Thesis (M.Ing. Recruitment ecology and fungal interactions in mycoheterotrophic EricaceaeJohansson, Veronika A. January 2014 (has links)
There are generally two contrasting alternatives to what limits recruitment in plants, namely the availability of seeds (seed limitation) or the quality or quantity of suitable sites (microsite limitation). Dust seeds, the smallest existing seeds, lack or have minimal nutrient reserves. During germination and initial development they consequently parasitize on mycorrhizal fungi. This is called mycoheterotrophy, and can vary in degree of fungal dependency in adult plants from full, partial or initial mycoheterotrophy. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the recruitment ecology of mycoheterotrophic Ericaceae (tribe Pyroleae) species with dust seeds, and to determine what limits their recruitment. The investigated species were: Chimaphila umbellata, Moneses uniflora, Orthilia secunda, Pyrola chlorantha, P. minor and P. rotundifolia. This aim was achieved by combining field experiments (seed sowing) with isotope analysis and fungal host pyrosequencing. Results provide evidence that the species in Pyroleae are heterogeneous, not only with regard to their degree of mycoheterotrophy, but also concerning germination and early seedling development. A combination of microsite and seed limitation is thus likely to be of importance for all studied species, but the relative importance of these limitations varies among species. Despite having adaptations for wind dispersal the majority of the seeds were deposited in close vicinity of the seed source. But with high seed production at least some seeds should be able to disperse long-distance. Seedlings of all studied species were found to associate with a wide range of ectomycorrhizal fungi, at least during their initial developmental stages. There seems to be a tendency for host narrowing in some Pyroleae species, but not as strict as the host specialization seen in fully mycoheterotrophic Monotropa hypopitys, supporting the hypothesis of geographical and developmental host shifts. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 3: In press. Previous issue date: 2015-08-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Nature offers a wide range of phenomena that inspire the development of new technologies. The researchers from the area of Natural Computing abstracts the concept of optimization from various biological processes such as the evolution of species, the behavior of social groups, the search for food, among others. Such computer systems that have a similarity to natural biological systems are called biologically plausible. The development of biologically plausible algorithms gets interesting by the fact that biological systems are able to handle extremely complex problems. In this way, symbiotic relationships are one of several phenomena that can be observed in nature. These relationships consist of interactions that organisms carry out with each other resulting in benefit or disadvantage to those involved. In an optimization context, symbiotic relationships can be used to perform exchange of information between populations of candidate solutions to a given problem. Thus, this work highlights the concepts involving symbiotic relationships that may be important for the development of computer systems to solve complex problems. The main discussion presented in this study refers to the use of symbiotic relationships between populations of candidate solutions co-evolving in an ecological context. According to the analogy, populations interact with each other according to a specific symbiotic relationship in order to evolve their solutions. The proposed model is applied to several continuous benchmark functions with a high number of dimensions (D = 200) and in several benchmark instances of the multiple knapsack problem. The results obtained so far were promising concerning the application of symbiotic relationships. Finally, the conclusions are presented and some future directions for research are suggested.

Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) in Brazil is grown in the most different climatic conditions. By the adaptability to tropical conditions and recognized as a culture of high socioeconomic value, this legume has an important role for the capitalization of small farmers in the Northeast region. Cowpea may obtain adequate quantities of N by the process of biological nitrogen fixation (FBN) when associated with specific and effective bacteria. However, in Brazil the practice of inoculation is not widely processed due to the low agricultural technology and inconsistent responses using the seed inoculation process. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of different rates of inoculum on effectivity and competitiveness of Bradyrhizobium (strain BR 3267) on cowpea grown in greenhouse conditions. The first experiment was carried out with five different concentration of strain BR 3267 (rhizobia cells/mL of inoculant), N mineral fertilizer treatment without inoculation, and a control without inoculation and N mineral fertilizer. The second experiment conducted in Leonard jars with inoculant produced with BR 3267 strain, 15 native rhizobia (isolated from the used soil), and a control treatment without inoculation and no N mineral fertilizer applied. The application of the low recommended rate increased number and dry biomass of nodules, shoot dry biomass and shoot N total uptake. In the Leonard jars experiment the rhizobia strain BR 3267 was more effective on nitrogen fixation and showed greater competitiveness compared to the native rhizobia isolates. The BRS Pujante cultivar was benefit by the FBN process when inoculated with strain BR 3267 proportional to the inoculum rate. / O feijão - caupi (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.)

Previous issue date: 2014-02-17 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Compared to other producing grain legumes, the common bean has short cycle, with high demand for nitrogen (N), which is the most mined and exported element by crops. N is a scarce element in tropical soils and the main sources, nitrate and ammonia, which may be available to the plant, are obtained from the decomposition of soil organic matter, mineral fertilization with nitrogen fertilizers and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) held by pulses nodulating bacteria. This study aimed to identify characteristics related to FBN in common bean cultivars with different growth cycles, which reflect in higher productivity. The experiments were conducted under field conditions for two consecutive years (2012 and 2013) in the winter crop, in the experimental area of Embrapa Rice and Beans, in Santo Antônio de Goiás, Goiás. In both experiments installed in nearby areas were used as treatments 22 cultivars of common bean, two of the early growth cycle, eight semi-early growth cycle, ten normal cycle and two late- cycle treated with inoculant prepared in the Laboratory of Soil Microbiology, Embrapa Rice and Beans, compound by strains of Rhizobium tropici (SEMIA 4077, SEMIA 4080 and SEMIA 4088) recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply as inoculants for the common bean cultivation. The design was randomized blocks . In the first year the collections were performed from V4 to R8 stage and were assessed at each stage the number, activity and dry weight of nodules, leaf area, dry weight and total nitrogen of aerial part (the R6 stage only), grain yield and its components (R9 stage) . In the second experiment the same evaluations were made, but only in R6 and R7 stages. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and the means compared by Skott-Knott test at 5% probability, graphs of Pearson correlation between variables were developed. The percentage of active nodules, leaf area, aerial part dry mass and total nitrogen were affected by cultivars. The number of nodules and dry weight of nodules were not affected. In stages of flowering and pod yield, nodule number, leaf area and dry weight of shoots were influenced by cultivars. The dry mass of nodules in flowering stage was influenced by the growth cycles and the regular and late cycles showed higher values. Grain yield was affected by cycles of cultivars and in the first experiment, early cultivars showed lower values than the other. Normal and late cycle cultivars arrived to total senescence of nodules on the phenological stage R7, while the early and semi-early cycles arrived to senescence of nodules in the R8 phase, however, there was minimal difference in days without active nodules between these.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-17 / This research approaches theoretical and practical features of cyberarts, particularly Robotic Art and its contexts. Knowing that this field is constantly changing, because it is an artistic production anchored in a permanently evolving technology, the aim here is to question the possibility of artistic creation by robots, as well as to enunciate the aesthetic, reflexive and processual possibilities of robotic art. Therefore, the premise of the thesis is based on the contemporary production of art and on technological improvement, since part of the work in art and technology results from the collaboration between human artists and an intelligent software. In accordance with the theoretical study, the processes of creation, the experiments and the production techniques of Nefelibata 2.0 were reported. The poetic production induced the creation of one robotic cloud, which interact with the public in a kind of robotic performance. The framework of this study is supported by the proposition that robotic art can be created by humans, robots or symbiotically, not being limited by the technical use of robotics, once electronic creatures can be given artificial creativity, a behavior of their own and may interact with the public. Thus, the objectives of this study are to conceptualize robotic art, discussing its aesthetic, interactive and poetic aspects, to reflect upon the perspectives set up on the field of robotic art, as well as to ponder over artificial creation.
