Long-term vegetation monitoring – a 33 year record from table mountain

Emms, Paul Ivor January 2013 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Biodiversity and Conservation Biology) / Nearly 40 years ago McLachlan and Moll highlighted the need for a well-defined path system on the Western Table of Table Mountain in the immediate vicinity of the Upper Cable Station (UCS). At that time the numbers of people using the cableway was heavily impacting the vegetation on the Western Table, particularly in the vicinity of the UCS. This prompted a study by Coley (1977) to assess the long-term impacts of trampling in this area. In order to monitor changes in the vegetation through time Coley set up 12 permanently marked plots (each ~4x4 m), arranged at increasing distances from the UCS. Plot positions were carefully selected so that the effects of trampling on the vegetation could be measured at various points (distance being a surrogate for trampling intensity). Field observations in 1977 revealed that Mountain Fynbos vegetation was heavily impacted by cableway tourists. Furthermore the vegetation was most damaged closest to the UCS, with a sharp decrease in damage with increasing distance from the station. In order to monitor the vegetation change Coley used aerial photographs of permanently marked plots, so that visual comparisons of species cover, condition and composition could be made over time. The vegetation was then assessed in terms of percentage cover, and percentage damaged for each plot. My study marks the fifth time data were collected since Coley (1977) and the results show that there has been a marked improvement in vegetation quality since the construction of well-defined paths and a concerted effort by managers to ensure tourists do not leave the paths; which has greatly reduced trampling since the 1997 upgrade. The implications of this study provided evidence of the importance of restricting iv tourist traffic in areas that are regularly visited and, therefore, highly impacted. It also shows that denuded fynbos is resilient and does recover over time, provided that the substrate is not eroded too heavily by trampling. Finally, I present several management recommendations, of which the most controversial, albeit important, is for a rotational block burn programme on the Western Table; since fire is a keystone ecological process that has been absent of the Western Table for at least 80 to 90 years.

Aplikace korespondenční analýzy v programu MS Excel / Correspondence analysis application in MS Excel program

Ganajová, Michaela January 2008 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis was to create independently an application, automating a correspondence analysis calculation using MS Excel and taking advantage of VBA programming language. The application was then used to analyse Slovak banking sector. The created application is based on macro sets which can be split up to two parts. The first part produces a contingency table and converts it into a format usable in the second part. Then there is executed the Correspondence Analysis calculation itself. Supplement Matrix is being used, that allows to discharge functions from matrix and linear algebra. The application allows to process any matrix dimension. Dialog window offers four normalization types, shortened and also full output and it is possible to display row or column variable categories, eventually both. The analysis subject was to find out which of the products are typical for considered banks and for which clients, divided into age categories, is attractive particular bank and/or product. A starting point is a product usage data matrix at a particular bank. There was made a conclusion, that it is possible to divide banks into more traditional or modern type institutions and also that each bank has a typical product.

Cool collapsible

Linnér, Fredrik January 2010 (has links)
Cool collapsible is a project that involves creating an innovative collapsible outdoor table. This thesis work has been performed in collaboration with aka buna design consult in Salzburg, Austria. Aka buna design consult is a design consultant who works with different product lines, cool collapsible is an internal project where the idea is about creating a product field with different collapsible products. As an exchange student and manage to established a contact and resulted in this thesis. The project has focused on finding a function, technology or materials to then transform it into an innovative outdoor table. By extensively worked to define the target group, created a framework for a table format for the typical user. The result was a collapsible table that got its inspiration from nature. A table, that folds up like a flower blooming. By adding an experience of a static product creates a different relation to the table so that it will stand out from today's market.

Weak Cayley Table Groups of Crystallographic Groups

Paulsen, Rebeca Ann 03 December 2021 (has links)
Let G be a group. A weak Cayley table isomorphism $\phi$: G $\rightarrow$ G is a bijection satisfying two conditions: (i) $phi$ sends conjugacy classes to conjugacy classes; and (ii) $\phi$(g1)$\phi$(g2) is conjugate to $\phi$(g1g2) for all g1, g2 in G. The set of all such mappings forms a group W(G) under composition. We study W(G) for fifty-six of the two hundred nineteen three-dimensional crystallographic groups G as well as some other groups. These fifty-six groups are related to our previous work on wallpaper groups.

Biodisponibilidad, aporte y costo por porción de consumo de calcio en Alimentos de la Tabla Peruana de Alimentos / Bioavailability, contribution and cost per share of calcium consumption in foods in the Peruvian food table

Burgos Farfán, Giannina, Zavala Barrientos, María Fernanda 06 May 2020 (has links)
Calcium is a micronutrient that plays an important structural function and participates in various processes of our body. Therefore, its inclusion in food is very important. After reviewing several articles, it was identified that in several countries the population does not meet their daily calcium requirements. One of the causes is the promotion of the consumption of plant foods as a source of this mineral without considering its bioavailability. In the first stage of the study, a review of the literature was carried out and scientific studies published in journals of four different databases were selected. The second stage shows the calcium contents in 71 selected foods from the Peruvian Food Table and its bioavailability by consumption portion. In addition, the costs per portion in markets and supermarkets of Lima Metropolitana were found. The results show that broccoli and dairy are foods that have the highest bioavailability of calcium with 61% and 32% respectively. However, the usual consumption portion of broccoli is small compared to dairy, which means that not enough of this micronutrient is obtained. It is concluded that, to meet calcium needs dairy is the best option and that, while there are some plant-based foods that can provide a lot of calcium and the cost of portioning some may be accessible, their bioavailability by consumption portion is low compared to dairy products. / Tesis
