The correlation of true boiling point and equilibrium flash vaporization curves for some Canadian crude oils

Hayduk, Walter January 1955 (has links)
An Othmer recirculating still and a standard packed column fractionating unit were used in determining the equilibrium flash vaporization and true boiling point curves respectively, for eight samples of crude oils from producing oil-fields in Alberta. The EFV curves, at 10 mm. absolute pressure were also obtained for these samples. Determinations at atmospheric pressure were used for modifying Okamoto and Van Winkle's correlation, which allows the prediction of the EFV curves from the TBP curves, for application to crude oils. The correlation relates the 50 percent points and the slopes of the two curves. In spite of its simplicity, it results in predicted curves of good accuracy. It is believed that this method is suitable for a large number of crudes and can give dependable phase equilibrium data. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Chemical and Biological Engineering, Department of / Graduate

The Evaluation and Control of the Changes in Basic Statistics Encountered in Grouped Data

Scott, James P. 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation describes the effect that the construction of frequency tables has on basic statistics computed from those frequency tables. It is directly applicable only to normally distributed data summarized by Sturges' Rule. The purpose of this research was to identify factors tending to bias sample statistics when data are summarized, and thus to allow researchers to avoid such bias. The methodology employed was a large scale simulation where 1000 replications of samples of size n = 2 ᵏ⁻¹ for 2 to 12 were drawn from a normally distributed population with a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one. A FORTRAN IV source listing is included. The report concludes that researchers should avoid the use of statistics computed from frequency tables in cases where raw data are available. Where the use of such statistics is unavoidable, the researchers can eliminate their bias by the use of empirical correction factors provided in the paper. Further research is suggested to determine the effect of summarization of data drawn from various non-normal distributions.

Attacking Disk Storage Using Hypervisor-Based Malware

Martin, Jaron W 11 May 2013 (has links)
Malware detection is typically performed using either software scanners running inside the operating system or external devices designed to validate the integrity of the kernel. This thesis proposes a hypervisor-based malware that compromises the system by targeting the hard disk drive and leaving the kernel unmodified. The hypervisor is able to issue read and write commands to the disk while actively hiding these actions from the operating system and any detection software therein. Additionally, the hypervisor’s presence has minimal impact on the performance of the system. The ability to perform these commands compromises the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the stored data. As a result, this thesis has widespread implications affecting personal, corporate, and government users alike.

Financial Independence and Economic Policy in Costa Rica

Calvo, Minor Vargas January 1978 (has links)
The main objective of the dissertation is to formulate a .system for financial analysis and planning in the Costa Rican economy. First, a tentative structure within which a model of the financial system can be organized is outlined, and the corresponding statistical tables are constructed for the period 1961-1975. It is expected that such tables will be periodically updated and incorporated into a series of publications which describe and analyze financial developments in Costa Rica. The study then analyzes the evolution of the Costa Rican financial system based on the generated data and a set of well-known financial indicators. Finally, alternative linear financial models are formulated and estimated; they are the basis for an analysis of financial interdependence, i.e., the process through which sectoral investment and/or saving decisions generate indirect financi~l consequences in the rest of the economy. Some interesting findings of the study, related to the analysis of financial developments during the period 1961-1975, are the observed rapid growth of the relative size of the Costa Rican financial super-structure, coupled with an accelerated process of monetization of the economy. In addition the importance of the foreign sector in the financial.activities of the country shows a considerable increase. The empirical evidence that emerges from estimating alternative linear financial models suggests a considerable degree of financial interdependence, with the government sector taking a predominant role in the generation of financial multiplier effects. It also indicates that the definition of sectoral preferences over liability holdings as a behavioral assumption in the underlying model, explains the pattern of sectoral financial behavior in the Costa Rican economy more effectively than the alternative assumption that preferences are defined over asset holdings. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Semantics of Funtion Tables on the Reals

Hossain, Sameena January 2013 (has links)
<p>This thesis develops a formalism of function tables, inspired by the work of D. Parnas. It adapts that formalism so as to apply to topological partial algebras, involving continuous partial functions on the reals. In particular, it studies semantics-preserving transformations between two classes of tables: normal and inverted. This leads to a 3-valued logic different from that used by Wei Lei (2007) who investigated the application of function tables to "error algebras".</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Thermodynamic calculations with TK!Solver

Jabbari, E. January 1986 (has links)
The objective of this research was to apply the TK!Solver program for thermodynamic calculations. The TK!Solver program is equation-solving software that can solve both linear and non-linear sets of equations. To achieve the above objective, six programs have been developed. Program ESTATE.TK calculates volumetric properties of compounds using the ideal gas law, Pitzer correlation, van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, Dieterici, or Berthelot equation of state. The volumetric properties include temperature, pressure, volume, and compressibility factor. Program RESIDUAL.TK calculates residual and total properties of compounds as a function of temperature and pressure using the Pitzer correlation, van der Waals, or Redlich-Kwong equation of state. The residual and total properties include residual volume, residual internal energy, residual enthalpy, and residual entropy. Program FRENERGY.TK calculates standard free energy of formation, standard enthalpy of formation, and standard entropy of formation for a compound or a reaction as a function of temperature. This program also calculates the equilibrium constant for a reaction as a function of temperature. Program CHON.TK calculates the equilibrium composition for an adiabatic or non-adiabatic reactor as a function of the temperature and pressure of the reactor, hydrogen-to-oxygen ratio, and nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio in the feed. The feed to the reactor consists of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. The products of the reactor are methane, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Program CRITICAL.TK furnishes critical data for more than fifty compounds. The critical data includes critical temperature, critical pressure, critical volume, critical compressibility factor, and the acentric factor. Programs ESTATE.TR and RESIDUAL.TK have access to data file CRITICAL.TK for state property calculations. Program DATBANK1.TK supplies heat capacity data, heat of formation, and entropy of formation data for more than one hundred compounds. Programs RESIDUAL.TK and FRENERGY.TK have access to data file DATBANK1.TK for enthalpy and entropy calculations. These six programs may be considered as a basis for an "expert" system for thermodynamic calculations. Data can be easily added to extend the calculations to include additional compounds. / M.S.

Derivation of data for estimating coastal Virginia's potential timber growth

Giauque, James Alan 12 June 2010 (has links)
Following review of several potential methods, growth tables for five defined coastal Virginia forest types were derived graphically by employing Gehrhardt's formula and published normal-yield information. The resultant tables depict the current periodic annual cubic-foot growth per acre expected of coastal Virginia forests on average site, by age class and cubic-foot stocking. / Master of Science
