From the Chinese Guan to the Mexican Chocolatero: A Tactile History of the Transpacific Trade, 1571-1815

Priyadarshini, Meha January 2014 (has links)
The dissertation follows the trajectory of one of the commodities of the transpacific trade, Chinese porcelain, from the city of Jingdezhen where it was produced, to Manila where it was sold to Spanish merchants, on to Mexico, where it was adopted by the colonial society. The study ends in the city of Puebla where potters drew inspiration from Chinese porcelain for the invention of a new ceramic style known as loza poblana. The methodology of following the trajectory of Chinese porcelains through various sites reveals a new kind of history, one where the tactile aspects of the circulation of goods become salient. The places, contexts, and transactions that the commodities passed through are more prominent--the trade is no longer an abstract exchange between different parties or an endeavor driven purely by imperial greed. Instead it emerges as a process that developed from an interaction between global material forces and local histories and contingencies. Such a tactile history also provides details about the movement and transfer of aesthetics in the early modern period, as seen in the case of the design of the Chinese guan, a jar form, that was adapted to make the Mexican chocolatero.

Alternate Perception of Objects

Babrak, Kamran January 2014 (has links)
Humans are surrounded by objects. The human-object interaction is more frequent than the human-human interaction. The history of objects is as old as the history of human beings. This fact establishes and defines their meanings in a social and cultural context. This essay aims to look at the established meanings of corpus objects and possibilities of developing new meanings of tableware and other objects related to table in contemporary craft. To investigate if the perception of the object changes with the change of material or its formal aesthetics. How can the meanings of the objects and their identities be altered  or substituted? Do we recognize the objects the same way if their form and function is altered? What role does material play in how one reads an object? This essay looks at the importance of objects and the role they play in our daily life. To explore what lies in an object beyond its function and the notion of materiality, what can be the boundaries and limitations of our perception, understanding and tradition of objects?

Sustainable Tableware

JI, SISI January 2022 (has links)
This research is done by designing a set of sustainable tableware to give customers a sustainable dining experience and promote restaurant sustainable practice. Through the exploration of new materials, the result is an innovation of tableware, thus sustainable restaurants will have a completely sustainable dining environment. At the same time, when customers experience sustainable dining customers, they will be promoted by sustainability and behavior more sustainable. With increasing environmental degradation, the United Nations published the sustainability goals to reduce the damage of the environment and build sustainable awareness. The restaurant brings lots of environmental issues like food waste, energy waste, and air pollution. Until now, there is not an ideal solution for tableware. The ceramic and porcelain manufactory overexploitation of natural resources and release harmful gases. The design process is an attempt to use new and degradable materials to design sustainable tableware.
