Short-term Statistics Of Wind Waves Around The Turkish Coast

Akbasoglu, Sinan 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, the wind-wave records obtained at three locations along the Turkish coasts (Alanya, Dalaman and Hopa) are analyzed. Probability distributions of individual wave characteristics (wave height, wave period and wave steepness) are obtained and compared with the model distributions. Goodness of fit of the observed distributions is checked by Chi-square test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Joint probability distribution of individual wave heights and periods is also studied and compared with the theoretical distributions. The relationships among various statistical wave height parameters and statistical wave period parameters are investigated and compared with the theoretical and reported values.

Numerical Modeling Of Groundwater Flow Behavior In Response To Beach Dewatering

Goler, Gunes 01 August 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, The Beach Dewatering System, a relatively recent technology to combat beach erosion, which is proposed as a practical alternative to more traditional shoreline stabilization methods, is investigated and an informative overview on the genesis, development and recent use of this technique is provided. On the basis of the link existing between the elevation of beach groundwater and erosional or accretionary trends at the beach face, a numerical model that simulates groundwater flow in a coastal aquifer under beach drainage is presented. In this model, the seaward boundary of the domain is considered to be tidally fluctuating in a large scale to represent the occurrence of seepage face significantly. The unsteady groundwater flow equation is solved numerically using the method of finite differences. The results clearly showed that the water table being lowered caused the reduction of the seepage face which is the main aim of Beach Dewatering projects. The positional design parameters, i.e. horizontal and vertical location of the drain, are also investigated by utilizing an efficiency index. It is observed that the system efficiency decreased as the drain is shifted landward. The results also indicated that, the efficiency slightly increased with the vertical drain elevation.

A Case Study On The Submerged Berm Type Coastal Defense Structures

Ozler, Basar 01 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Coastal defense structures are built in order to protect valuable coastal regions from the destructive effects of the waves. Due to the cost of coastal defense structures and the economical potential of the coastal regions, failure of such structures could cause loss of high amounts of investment. Therefore in the design and construction of coastal structures, it is of vital importance to achieve an optimum design which is not neither underdesigned nor overdesigned. In this study, Submerged Berm type coastal defense structures with several different cross-sections were tested for stability under storm conditions. Damage analyses of the different models were carried out to compare the structure characteristics under storm conditions and to obtain the most economical and stable cross-section. For the model studies, 5 different models were constructed by using Van der Meer&rsquo / s approach and berm design guidelines. Models were constructed with a model scale of 1:31.08 in the wave flume in the Coastal and Harbor Engineering Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, METU. The newly designed and optimized berm type structure was proved to be successful and economical.

Numerical Modeling Of Shoreline Changes Around Manavgat River Mouth

Al Saleh, Fatima 01 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
River mouths are very active coastal regions. Continuous sediment supply by the river and the movement by wave action cause the shoreline to change in time and space. Modeling of shoreline changes is an essential step before the design of any coastal engineering project. This research aimed to develop a system of numerical models to present the shoreline changes around a river mouth. The system of numerical models has three components: 1) modeling of nearshore wave characteristics, 2) modeling of longshore sand transport rates using the results of the first component, 3) modeling of shoreline changes using the estimated sand transport rates. Thus, firstly, deep water wave characteristics including the annual wave rose affecting Manavgat River mouth have been obtained from the database of NATO TU-WAVES Project. Then REF/DIF1 and SWAN nearshore wave models have been used to find out nearshore wave conditions. Since the results obtained from REF/DIF1 wave model have been found to be more reasonable compared to SWAN&rsquo / s output, REF/DIF1 wave model has been used in preparing a time series nearshore reference wave file with three hours time interval. This reference file has been used to run GENESIS. Last step of the numerical shoreline change modelling of Manavgat River mouth was the calibration procedure in which the &ldquo / transport parameters&rdquo / k1 and k2 have been determined. As there is lack of measurements of shoreline positions that can be used in calibrating shoreline change model, k1 and k2 has been approximately found to be k1=0.516 and k2=0.9 by using an empirical sediment transport formula. As a future study, it is recommended that when the protection structure controlling the river mouth is finished, the measurements of shoreline position behind the structure should be used in verification of shoreline change model in order to get more accurate results.

Impact Of Ataturk Dam On Social And Environmental Aspects Of The Southeastern Anatolia Project

Akyurek, Gokce 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis the impact of the Atat&uuml / rk Dam on social and environmental aspects of the Southeastern Anatolia Project has been discussed in terms of planning and policy making, institutional arrangements, infrastuctural development and human resources development. In order to analyse the impacts of Atat&uuml / rk Dam data related to several components are collected. These components can be listed as resettlement, land acquisition and land consolidation, education, health, gender issues. The results show that the Atat&uuml / rk Resettlement has been done involuntarily. The people mostly have their compensation. However the management abilities of the resettlers for the compensations were poor. Generally the Southeastern Anatolia Project as a large scale multi sectoral projects have positive impacts on the literacy ratio and health standards. Actually the social and environmental aspects of this kind of large scale projects are difficult to predict and measure. Therefore reasonable studies on prediciting the problems related to the environemental and social issues and producing sufficient solutions become more and more important day by day. The Southeastern Anatolia Project becomes an important example for similar projects by considering its both positive and negative impacts

Schaffer, Vandir Rudolfo January 1992 (has links)
This thesis deals with an analysis of religious-christian literature concerning the rock movement which identifies religious ethical norms that condemn rock music. This literature points to two different groups regarding their ideological position. One group accepts rock as just a cultural movement associated with young people. The other, mainly religious and clergymen, consider rock music to be dangerous with a destructive influence on the youth. These two stands generated the basic idea of this research along with the following objectives: 1) To present a critical analysis of the bibliography related to the religious-christian viewpoint dealing with rock; 2) To discuss the negative critique to this music by means of an analysis of the relation rock music/listeners. The thesis is divided into three chapters: the first indicates very strong condemnation of this music by much of the religious literature and why so. The second one is a comparative of the topics presented in the first chapter by using non-religious literature. Finally, the third chapter shows the results of field work done at the "Rock in Rio II Festival" in Rio de Janeiro, 1991. Much of what was presented in the previous chapters is discussed vis a vis data gathered at that event. It can be concluded that the discussion dealing with the condemnation of rock represents a dispute of power by which those of a religious background desire to maintain the loyalty of the christian community to its principles. In this way, rock appears to be a threat to them because their mission, acording to their literature and philosophy, is not to copy the world in its life style and its musical preference. However, research dealing with non-religous literature revealed that this music is a reflection of the society and its current culture. Also, this literature leads to conclude that many of the problems pointed out by the religious critics concerning rock music are effected by non-musical factors.
