The Relationship between School-Based Decision Making and Student Achievement in Elementary Schools in a Large Urban School DistrictStandridge, Louise Norton 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore whether school-based decision making (SBDM) impacts student achievement. Specifically, the study involved determining if the degree of teacher involvement in SBDM across eight decision dimensions differed between schools that demonstrated the most and schools that demonstrated the least district improvement in student achievement. The population consisted of elementary schools in a large urban school district with more than ten years of SBDM implementation. Student achievement scores from 1993 to 1995 were examined for all 68 elementary schools. Based on degree of improvement for fourth grade scores over the three years, 15 schools from the 25% most improved and 15 schools from the 25% least improved were selected for study. Schools from the two extreme-groups sample were matched on five demographic variables. The Teacher Involvement Participation Scale—TIPS-2 (Russell,1992), an instrument for measuring the degree of SBDM in eight different decision dimensions, was given to all certified personnel at each school. A return of 575 surveys represented 63% of the sample schools' staff. Two short questionnaires were administered to principals and SBDM teams to collect descriptive data. Findings, using MANOVA followed by univariate tests, indicated significant differences between groups in six of the eight SBDM decision dimensions. The most improved schools had a higher degree of participation (p < .01) in SBDM decisions in dimensions of: 1) goals/vision/mission, 2) curriculum/instruction, 3)standards, and 4) facilitating procedures/structures. Although neither group participated widely in decisions about staffing and operations, the most improved schools were more involved in those decisions than the least improved schools (p < .05). No significant difference was found between the two groups in the dimensions of budget and staff development. It is concluded that student achievement is positively impacted by greater participation in SBDM in at least six of eight SBDM dimensions, with "goals/vision/mission" and "curriculum/instruction" being the most critical factors. Although these findings indicate that SBDM contributes to improved student achievement, further research is needed to determine if this study's findings are supported.

Children's Perceptions of Teachers' Responses to Bullying: Relational Schemas as Predictors of Seeking Teachers' AssistanceJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role teacher-relational bullying schemas may have in influencing the likelihood of youth seeking teachers' assistance. The first goal of the study was to assess whether supportive and helpful teacher-responses to bullying schemas (TRBS) were associated with greater likelihood of involving teachers, and unhelpful TRBSs was related to lower likelihood of teacher seeking coping. The second goal was to examine possible differences in TRBS and likelihood of seeking help based on sex, grade, personal behavioral blame, personal aggression, and victimization. Towards these aims, data were gathered from 320 fourth and sixth grade students (152 boys; 168 girls) in the fall and spring of the academic year. MANOVA analyses revealed sex and grade differences, such as sixth grade boys were least likely to tell their teacher and most likely to blame their own behavior for being bullied than any other group. Results from a series of regression analyses found personal behavior blame and peer-directed aggression was related with less likelihood of telling. In addition, the association between parents or principal TRBS and telling the teacher was moderated by personal behavioral blame. Certain environmental interactions such as problematic parent-child relationships or peer rejection in school are associated with the development of emotional and behavioral disorders. Children with emotional and behavioral disorders experience difficulties in a variety of areas including academics, social relationships, behaviors, and life outcomes. These emotional and behavioral disorders can progress or regress depending on relationships occurring within the child’s environment. Positive, healthy, and caring parent and teacher involvement in the lives of these children is an important factor. When parents and teachers become involved, especially when they work together to set mutual goals to help with success, children with emotional and behavioral disorders may see improvements in their problem behaviors, experience more successful achievement in academics, and develop in a direction that is more normative rather than problematic. This information can be applied through an online educational module for parents of children with EBD that aims to educate these parents on the avenues to and importance of involvement.

The main aim of this study was to investigate how effective School Management Teams were in the management of healthy school environments in the Gert Sibande District. This was a qualitative study which employed two data collection strategies: face to face interviews and photographs. A literature review on this study revealed vital aspects, that a healthy school environment: can directly improve children’s health and effective learning; the school is strategically positioned to reach large numbers of the population to teach them to understand the importance of investing in health. Literature indicated collaboration and synergy as essential aspects, and policies as cornerstones that underpin the health promotion initiatives. Selection of sites was purposefully done as three of the four schools in this study were part of the Eco Schools programme. The study revealed that there was disconnect between the SMTs and committees that were involved in health promotion: in coordinating plans; and monitoring and evaluating the implementation of programmes. This therefore, means that there was no support for the committees from the SMT. It was also found that there were committees that: did not have plans; did not sit for meetings and the reluctance of the SMT to address these challenges compounded the situation and contributed to some committees being dysfunctional. The failure of the SMT to guide and provide leadership in their engagement with community members who provided assistance in terms of basic needs to learners indicated a need for the development of a cadre of leaders that are capable of working beyond the borders of schools. In all the committees that were interviewed, the Environmental Committee came up to be more effective and organized than others in three schools. The health committee was lacking in the area of training especially in the prevention of communicable diseases. Curriculum implementation for learners with special education needs : the case of selected inclusive and special schools in ZambiaMuzata, Kenneth Kapalu 09 1900 (has links)
A curriculum is a mirror reflecting the identity, goals, aims and objectives of any nation. The kind of graduates a country has are a reflection of the type of curriculum and the success of any curriculum depends on the involvement of those who implement it. Teachers in particular are the ‘engine’ of curriculum success but can also be the architects of its downfall. Zambia launched the 2013 curriculum framework in January 2014. However, with a worldwide historical trend of discrimination against disability and to some extent against teachers of learners with disabilities, it was imperative to undertake this study to establish how the 2013 revised curriculum was being implemented in teaching Learners with Special Educational Needs in Zambia. Without knowledge of whether special education teachers were involved in the curriculum process or not, it was further imperative to study their involvement in the curriculum development process and its implementation.
This study sampled one hundered and twenty (120) special education teachers, twelve (12) Education Standards Officers and two (2) Curriculum Specialists for special education. Questionnaires, interviews, checklists and teacher observations were used to collect data. Questionnaires were administered to special education teachers to collect data of their knowledge about and involvement in curriculum development process, the methods and strategies and the challenges they faced implementing the curriculum. Interviews were administered on Education Standards Officers and Curriculum Specialists for special education to establish their role the curriculum development process, their appreciation of the curriculum change, the challenges they and the teachers faced implementing the curriculum and how they helped to overcome the challenges. By using the observation checklist during lesson observation and post lesson discussions, the researcher managed to collect data about the actual experiences in natural settings – the classroom.
The study employed the Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Design. Quantitative data was analysed by use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to derive statistical interpretations such as frequencies, percentages, standard deviation, mean, significant differences and relationships. Qualitative data was analysed with the help of NVIVO qualitative data software to create themes by coding density and basic cross tabulations by node attribute values. Results were triangulated to come up with a consolidated conclusion. It was established that special education teachers were not involved in the CDP except at implementation and they were implementing the revised curriculum amidst numerous challenges. Lack of involvement in the curriculum development process was linked to special education teachers’ lack of understanding of key concepts necessary for curriculum implementation for LSENs.
The study recommends a deliberative cycle of training of special education teachers in the revised curriculum as it relates to special education. The study further calls for the provision of necessary specialised and adapted materials for effective implementation of the revised curriculum. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Phil.
