RAPIDLY ADAPTABLE INSTRUMENTATION TESTER (RAIT)

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Emerging technologies in the field of "Test & Measurement" have recently enabled the development of the Rapidly Adaptable Instrumentation Tester (RAIT). Based on software developed with LabVIEW®, the RAIT design enables quick reconfiguration to test and calibrate a wide variety of telemetry systems. The consequences of inadequate testing could be devastating if a telemetry system were to fail during an expensive flight mission. Supporting both open-bench testing as well as automated test sequences, the RAIT has significantly lowered total time required to test and calibrate a system. This has resulted in an overall lower per unit testing cost than has been achievable in the past.

A LIGHT-WEIGHT INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEM DESIGN

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / To meet challenging constraints on telemetry system weight and volume, a custom Light-Weight Instrumentation System was developed to collect vehicle environment and dynamics on a short-duration exo-atmospheric flight test vehicle. The total telemetry system, including electronics, sensors, batteries, and a 1 watt transmitter weighs about 1 kg. Over 80 channels of measurement, housekeeping, and telemetry system diagnostic data are transmitted at 128 kbps. The microcontroller-based design uses the automotive industry standard Controller Area Network to interface with and support in-flight control functions. Operational parameters are downloaded via a standard asynchronous serial communications interface. The basic design philosophy and functionality is described here.

Two satellites are scheduled for launch in November of 2002. One features a beacon that operates autonomously of all but the power system and can independently deploy the antennas. The other will test the performance of new semiconductor devices in low earth orbit. Sensors will monitor voltages, currents (from which attitude and tumble rate can be derived), received signal strength and a distribution of temperatures. The CubeSat’s architecture, operating system, sensors, telemetry format and link budget are discussed.

Car-side systems collect and transmit data onboard over an ISO 11898 / CAN bus. A bridge then converts this data into TCP/IP packets, which are transmitted via Ethernet to a Wi-Fi access point. The data is distributed through an IEEE 802.11N 5GHz mesh network to provide real time data to remote computers running telemetry software. This software displays and logs data from the car, allowing team members to monitor the vehicle.

Acquisition and Near Real-Time Display of Multispectral Test Data from Widely Separated Test Sites

Seekers may be multispectral and must be able to overcome threat countermeasures. To effectively analyze the performance of these weapons, time-correlated test data must be efficiently, simultaneously acquired from both the weapons' internal busses and from the threat countermeasures' internal communication busses, often in a "live fire" environment. The test data must be transmitted to a central processing station where test personnel may immediately analyze the performance of the weapon with the assistance of scientific visualization techniques. In addition, the data must be captured on permanent media for future playback and more detailed analysis. One solution is to link the test article, threat countermeasures and other test support resources through an Integrated Telemetry System (ITS). Instrumentation to acquire high-speed test data is installed in data collection vans that are remotely located in the vicinity of the article under test or in the vicinity of the threat countermeasures systems or test support resources. The remote vans will be interconnected and linked to a control van which provides a centralized test control and monitoring point. Remote Data Formatter (RDF) instrumentation units, located in the remote vans, can acquire data from and control seekers, sensors, emission sources or other equipment located in or near the remote vans. The RDF units can also format the data for transmission to the control van via either fiber optic or microwave radio links. The data transmitted from multiple remote vans is received by Real-time Data Processing System (RTPS) units located in the control van for merging, processing and recording. Some of the processed data can be transferred to a Host Processing System (HPS) where it can be displayed on color graphic workstations. The control van's HPS workstations provide user-friendly displays and menus for test setup and control. Both the remote and control vans are equipped with secure digital communication systems capable of supporting compressed digital video, audio, high-speed instrumentation data and an Ethernet computer network.

UNIX-Compatible Real-Time Environment for NASA's Ground Telemetry Data Systems

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / NASA's ground telemetry data systems developed by the Microelectronics Systems Branch at the Goddard Space Flight Center, use a generic but expandable architecture known as the "Functional Components Approach." This approach is based on the industry standard VMEbus and makes use of multiple commercial and custom VLSI hardware based cards to provide standard off-the-shelf telemetry processing functions (e.g., frame synchronization, packet processing, etc.) for many telemetry data handling applications. To maintain maximum flexibility and performance of these systems, a special real-time system environment has been developed, the Modular Environment for Data Systems (MEDS). Currently, MEDS comprises over 300,000 lines of tested and operational code based on a non-UNIX real-time commercial operating system. To provide for increased functionality and adherence to industry standards, this software is being transformed to run under a UNIX-compatible real-time environment. This effort must allow for existing systems and interfaces and provide exact duplicates of the system functions now used in the current real-time environment. Various techniques will be used to provide a relatively quick transition to this new real-time operating system environment. Additionally, all standard MEDS card to card and system to system interfaces will be preserved, providing for a smooth transition and allowing for telemetry processing cards that have not yet been converted to reside side-by-side with cards that have been converted. This paper describes this conversion effort.
