The Development of Commercial Advertising in Saudi Television from 1986-1988

AlFardi, Abdullah A. A. 08 1900 (has links)
The story of Saudi television began in 1962 when King Faisal, who was then the crown prince, pointed out that the government intended to utilize the medium of television as a tool for information, guidance, culture, and recreation (Saudi Arabia, Ministry of Information, 1985). From July 17, 1965, when the first transmission signal went out simultaneously from stations in Riyadh and Jeddah until the transfer to the new Riyadh Television Complex in 1982. Saudi television has gone through many phases of development. The most recent development was the introduction of commercial advertising in 1986. Saudi television commercials have taken the form of 10 to 20 minute blocks which are taped and then aired many times during the broadcasting hours. Because Saudi television is a governmental operation, all of the funds required to maintain its expenditures are provided by the Saudi government, and commercial advertising is a new development. Thus, there was a need for a study which told the story of commercial advertising's development in Saudi television.

The effect of television viewing on college students : an EEG analysis of cerebral asymmetry

Sheffel, William B. 01 January 1984 (has links)
The controversy over the effects of television viewing on human behavior has drawn a great deal of attention over the last decade. This study sought to investigate this area by looking at cortical response to television viewing. The subjects in the study consisted of 24 men and 24 women (m=l9 .6 years) who were monitored for bilateral EEG alpha (8-13 Hz) brain wave production while viewing a television commercial (verbal and nonverbal/ spatial) and were then tested for recall at the end of the session. The analysis of variance for a split-plot factorial design (S.P.F. 222.43; Kirk, 1968) revealed that while there were no differences between cerebral hemispheres, there were significant increases in the amount of alpha brain .wave production (p <. 01) during the trials. The results of this study support the first hypothesis that "EEG alpha levels will increase with repeated exposure to televised commercials." The significance of this finding is that it contrasts sharply with earlier research and indicates that repeated viewing of the same commercial results in an erosion of the viewer's interest.

Dopad hospodářské krize na televizní trh v České republice / Impact of the Financial Crisis on the TV Market in the Czech Republic

Motáňová, Markéta January 2013 (has links)
Thesis called Impact of the Economic Crisis on the Television Market in the Czech Republic combines two main topics: current economic crisis and TV market in the Czech Republic. TV market is closely connected with the television advertising market. This thesis try to answer the question whether and how the economic crisis affected the amount of funds invested in television advertising and how changes in the television advertising market were reflected in the financial results of TV stations. To evaluate the financial situation of television companies was used the financial analysis. Development of the volume of investment in television advertising and television advertising prices were examined through data and information from the research agencies. The thesis also examines the consequences for the viewer, ie whether the economic crisis reflected in changing broadcasting schedule and whether these changes subsequently affect viewership of TV. To determine this information is used quantitative analysis of the television program within defined period. Viewership of television companies surveyed is evaluated on the basis of data research agencies (especially Association of TV Organisations). For the comprehensive assessment of the problem this thesis is supplemented by the treatise on the current...

Discursive ambiguities: feminist responses to the mass media

Vicente, Andresa Natacha Gomes de Almeida 30 November 2003 (has links)
This dissertation explores how representations of women in the media function as heterodesignations in response to the current socio-economic cultural complex of globalization. In its merger with reality, the media has become the dominant discourse and the means through which prevailing modes of self-understanding are made available in postmodern society, of which the simulacrum is a key feature. Representations of women in the media in general, and in television advertisements in particular, are not, in any way, subversive of hegemonic discourse and, despite the prevalent ambiguity of these images, construct women in conformity with traditional gender stereotypes. Through practices of deconstruction, such as feminist counter-cinema, of which the film Female Perversions is an example, feminism has an important role to play in liberating women from the oppressive effects of these representations, even if these efforts are not, in themselves, free from ambiguity. / English Studies / M.A. (English)

Television advertising as a means of promoting an intercultural and interracial South Africa and nation building. A case study of the International Marketing Council's 'alive with possibility' campaign.

Asmall, Sumaya. January 2010 (has links)
The study is concerned with how television advertising content in South Africa promotes diversity and nation building. It looks at whether advertising representations reflect the idea of a new South Africa. The basis of the study involves a thorough analysis of the International Marketing Council’s (IMC) ‘alive with possibility’ television campaign through content analysis as well as Focus Group discussions. These advertisements are then comparatively examined with corporate advertisements on South African television. Post 1994 advertising was facing a new era with new challenges, especially due to the emerging black middle class as an important target market. Advertising in South Africa went through an enormous transformation, especially with regard to race and cultural representations and symbols of nationalism and patriotism. Some adverts, like those of the IMC, took on a specific didactic role to try and shift the perceptions of people. These ideals were also noticeable in corporate advertising in the country. Although television advertising itself went under transformation, people were unable to progress as quickly as broadcasting did. The dissertation looks at the variety of opinions regarding this type of advertising in South Africa. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.
