The Myth of the Lost Cause and Tennessee Textbooks, 1889-2002.

Duby, Rachel Christine 16 August 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The Myth of the Lost Cause is an inaccurate account of the Civil War that remains prominent in American society. The myth alters key aspects of the war such as its cause, participants, and outcome. It is my hypothesis that one reason many Americans misunderstand the war is because they learned inaccurate information as children. Most children first learn of the war in school textbooks. I became curious as to the accuracy of Civil War information. As there is little research on this topic, this paper begins the process of bridging the gap between education curriculum and the Lost Cause. I examined textbooks used in Tennessee schools between 1889-2002. I discovered that the Lost Cause is most prominent in textbooks used in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century but remains present in modern textbooks. I conclude that material will continue to correct itself as the twenty-first century continues.

Student Perceptions Of Race And Gender Representations Within College Textbooks

Blankenship, Chastity Lynn 01 January 2011 (has links)
This study examines introductory textbooks images across a variety of disciplines, with particular focus on the ways in which race and gender are shown. This study goes beyond a basic analysis of textbooks, however, and also explores student perceptions of textbook images. My data show that compartmentalization of gender and race into certain themes still occurs within some textbooks. Specifically, white men were more likely to be depicted as hard workers and contributors to the field than any other race and gender. Despite these results, students seemed mixed on the importance of textbook images with many students focused on the extent their textbook was useful for class.

Mellan raderna - En kunskapsöversikt om synen på islam i svenska läromedel / Between the lines - A research overview of the view of Islam in Swedish teaching materials

Odh, Rebecca, Jacobsson, Emma January 2024 (has links)
This essay aims at examine the existing research on textbook analysis of Islamic studies in Swedish religious education (Religionskunskap) and the consequences this may have on education about Islam. The research questions this essay intends to answer are; How is Islam presented in different teaching materials according to previous research?, How are women in Islam portrayed in teaching materials according to previous research? and, What are the consequences of this portrayal of Islam according to previous research?. Through various similar essays and research databases, such as Libsearch, ProQuest and EBSCOhost, we found analyses of textbooks and teaching material and other research that elaborate on the research questions in this essay. Swedish school authorities have through investigations and reports found that teaching about Islam reproduces stereotypes. The supplementary research presented in this essay reach the same conclusions. This finding is a result of i.a. the Lutheran tradition in the Swedish school system, the Western context in which Islam is seen from an orientalist’s perspective and the Western media's coverage of Muslim countries' conflicts, all of which influence the Swedish education about Islam. In conclusion, the textbook analysis shows that the information on Islam in Swedish education is either wrong, angled, lack information or describe Islam as a religion with an agency. This causes an undesirable reproduction of stereotypes of Islam. Instead of counteracting stereotypes in the curriculum of the Swedish religious education, this essay shows that the outcome is rather the opposite.

Inclusion and Exclusion of Gender, Social Class, Race and Ability in Elementary German Textbooks

Keenan, Emmalie 15 July 2020 (has links)
Elementary German language textbooks today lack diverse representations of gender, social class, race, and ability. This thesis argues that the exclusion of those categories of diversity impedes the objectives of the communicative learning approach for students in first-year German courses. It examines research on diversity in textbooks with a focus on the concept of the “third space”, and shows how these findings apply to German students. An analysis of chapters from three German textbooks published between 2018 and 2020: Netzwerk neu A1, Impuls Deutsch 1, and Grenzenlos Deutsch provides specific examples of how images, texts, dialogs, grammar, and vocabulary exercises could be designed or redesigned to make the German language classroom a space in which all students are able to communicate and express themselves.

Textbooks, a vivid mirror of culture : a comparative study of animal materials in American elementary reading textbooks and Chinese elementary language textbooks

Ma, Chunhui January 1992 (has links)
Comparative research on the treatment of animal materials in Chinese elementary language textbooks and American elementary reading textbooks provides an interesting perspective on both Chinese and American cultures. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. From the study, we notice that animals in Chinese textbooks are presented as animals, i.e., creatures closer to nature without human fantasy and illusion attached to them. Animals are used to communicate to children for moral education, wisdom development and so on. By comparison, animals in American textbooks are presented as much closer to humans. Animals dress and act like humans and are found in human setting. Animals can be more human than humans. Idealistic images and dreams are frequently linked to animals rather than humans. Textbooks are cultural mirrors. The different orientations of animal materials indicateenculturation of children. The cultural reasons beneath these surface differences are examined. Predictions are different cultural values and different goals for the provided on the animal enculturation in future China. / Department of Anthropology

A Comparative Content Analysis of Texas and Thai High School Biology Textbooks

Roadrangka, Vantipa 05 1900 (has links)
There were two purposes of this study. The first was that of determining, through an analysis of Texas and Thai biology textbooks, which objectives -- cognitive, affective, manual skill, processes of scientific inquiry, and orientation—were emphasized in three major and twenty-seven minor fields of biology. The second purpose was to determine if significant differences exist in the frequency distribution of these objectives. Only one biology program is used in schools throughout Thailand. This program, which was published by the Ministry of Education, consists of four textbooks with 1977 copyright date. The five Texas textbooks used in this study were those adopted under the provisions of the Textbook Law. The contents of each of the six texts included in the study were classified by using the criteria of Klopfer's Table of Specifications for Science Education.
