Sexual risk behavior and attitudes towards condom-use amongst university students in Bangkok, Thailand : A quantitative study

Ölund, Simon, Währborg, Cindra January 2015 (has links)
Abstract Introduction: One of the largest threats towards normal reproduction and sexual health is sexual transmitted diseases, were the most known is HIV and AIDS. The epidemiology of Thailand shows that over the last two decades several surveys reports an increase in the young adults' STD prevalence. The infections are mostly gained as a result of sexual risk behaviors and inconsistent condom use. AIM: The aim was to investigate sexual risk behavior and attitudes to condom use among Thailand university students in Bangkok. Method: The design used in this study was a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative method. A single five part questionnaire was handed out to 300 students within two different universities in Bangkok, Thailand. 269 participants completed the questionnaire and 132 of them met the inclusion criteria. Result: 132 participants reported having had sexual intercourse. 15 (11.4%) had a low risk behavior, 97 (73.5%) had an average risk behavior and 20 (15.2%) had a high risk behavior. There were no significant difference between male (n=97) and female (n=35) participants regarding sexual risk behavior (p= 0,68) and their attitudes towards condom-use (p= 0.990). A correlation between the two variables high sexual risk behavior and negative attitudes towards condom-use could be seen, r=0.326, n= 132, p= 0.00. Conclusions: The majority of the university students in our study showed an average risk behavior. The attitudes towards condoms were mostly positive with the exceptions of some specific questions. Further studies about Thai university students regarding sexual health is of importance to further decrease the sexual risks and STDs in the population.

A Model for Inclusive Schools in Thailand

Vorapanya, Sermsap, 1974- 12 1900 (has links)
xv, 241 p. : ill., map. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Inclusive education is now accepted worldwide as the best educational practice for children with special needs, but there is still considerable debate about how best to implement inclusion in specific cultures. The purpose of this research study was to develop a model of inclusion that is appropriate for elementary schools in Thailand and to identify appropriate leadership roles in adoption of inclusion practices. This research study was divided into two phases. The first phase consisted of an extensive review of inclusion practice and research findings around the world and development of a best practices inclusion model to guide subsequent interviews. Ten best practices inclusive elementary school principals were interviewed, and observations were conducted in classrooms and surrounding school environments. The phase one findings were then used to create a draft model for Thai inclusive education. In the second phase of research, two focus groups, made up of ten nationally recognized experts in the area of Thai special education, were used. The participants assisted with refinement of the best practices model for Thai elementary schools. Findings included identification of three critical aspects that affect the adoption of inclusion practices: specific characteristics of Thai society and culture; current policy and practices related to current policy; and financing of inclusion. School principals were found to be essential to successful inclusion adoption. Recommendations are made for changes in practice and policy and for future research. The final conclusion drawn from this study was that, even though Thailand had made a great beginning to a monumental and honorable task, the idea of inclusive education is still in early development. The core findings of the research study argue that, while more steps needs to be taken as implementation of inclusion continues, the principals, teachers, parents, education experts, and the people of Thailand have the commitment and strength of determination to make inclusion an integrated part of Thai education. / Committee in Charge: Diane Dunlap, Chairperson, Educational Leadership; Deborah Olson, Member, Special Education and Clinical Sciences; Kathleen Scalise, Member, Educational Leadership; Kathie Carpenter, Outside Member, International Studies

Södra Thailands gränskonflikt : En fallstudie om den långvariga konflikten i södra Thailand och dess förutsättningar för fred

Marouf, Tara January 2017 (has links)
For years there has been an ongoing conflict, geographically concerning the southern parts of Thailand. The Malay-Muslim inhabitants of the area state that they do not fully belong to Buddhist Thailand and therefore require independence in various forms. Along with the Muslims, the Buddhist inhabitants of the area also suffer from daily violence and killings. The counteractions over the years seems to have resulted in chaotic conditions where civilians die regularly. After many years of violence, this complex situation has not successfully been ended and is still current. This case study will examine the requisites for peace in southern Thailand. The conflict has been studied through a conflict management perspective, thereof the choice of theory; Svante Karlsson’s conflict management theory. The conflict has been described, discussed and applied to the chosen theory. Results presented in this study shows that it is possible to achieve peace in the southern provinces of Thailand, however cooperation between the parts is necessary. A combination of several conflict management methods by Svante Karlsson can possibly result in peace in southern Thailand.

A Model Graduate Program in Physical Education for Thai Colleges and Universities

Boonliang Koomchoo 08 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was the development of a model graduate program leading to a master's degree in physical education which could be used in Thailand and provide suitable guidelines for Thai colleges and universities interested in establishing such a program. A secondary purpose was to develop a systematic approach for student admission and a retention plan which would be compatible with the current trends and administration of higher education in Thailand. Following a review of the literature that included the history of general education, higher education, and physical education in Thailand as well as graduate study in physical education in the United States, a research instrument was devised to elicit responses from chairpersons of physical education departments in 156 U.S. institutions of higher learning and from a professional panel of five physical educators in Thailand concerning four aspects of master's degree programs in physical education: patterns and organization, curricular concepts, admission and retention requirements, and core course requirements. The return rate for the chairpersons surveyed in the United States was 85 per cent. The responses received from the U.S. and Thai professionals revealed a consensus between the two groups with regard to a number of the items in all four of the topic areas covered by the questionnaire. Based upon the survey results, guidelines were suggested for a model master's degree program in physical education in Thai colleges and universities. In addition, recommendations for further research were made, notably a review of master's programs in physical education in other countries which could provide valuable information for further modification of the model and systematic evaluation of the model program as implemented within a university setting.

The effectiveness of cultural adaptation : Americans selling to Japanese and Thais

Pornpitakpan, Chanthika 11 1900 (has links)
A 2 x 4 factorial design (cultural dyads x levels of cultural adaptation) is used to investigate the effect of cultural adaptation on attraction, outcomes, perceived compliment, and perceived trustworthiness when Americans sell to Japanese and Thais. This dissertation extends the research of Francis (1989, 1991) by taking into account the influence of collectivism, perceived status differential, similarity-attraction, and social identity. The curvilinear relationship found by Francis to exist between cultural adaptation and attraction when Japanese adapt to American norms and behaviors is not replicated by the experiments. Both Thai and Japanese subjects generally perceive Americans as having a higher status than themselves. They are not threatened by Americans’ adaptation to their cultural norms and practices. For Thai subjects, the relationship between cultural adaptation and attraction, outcomes, and perceived compliment appears to be monotonic positive. For Japanese subjects, the relationship reaches a plateau beyond moderate adaptation. The no adaptation condition is rated lower in perceived trustworthiness than is the substantial adaptation condition in both the Thai and the Japanese experiments, contradicting the findings of Francis. / Business, Sauder School of / Marketing, Division of / Graduate

Analyzing the amount and type of information that is presented in Thai television commercials

Supthawechaikul, Oranee 01 January 2002 (has links)
The globalization of the market place is arguably the most important challenge facing companies. Globilization affects consumer behavior and attitudes in many ways, in that they transcend national borders. Thus, a major challenge facing the international marketer is to identify global market segments and reach them with products, marketing programs, and advertising messages that meet the common needs of the consumers.
