Export marketing decision-making by wood household furniture manufacturers in Malaysia and the United StatesIdrus, Roszehan Mohd 26 October 2005 (has links)
This dissertation presents export decision-making information meant to complement the array of information available to wood furniture manufacturers, relevant government agencies, and marketers. It utilizes data obtained from a literature search as well as from a national survey of 947 wood household-furniture manufacturers in the U.S. and 310 manufacturers in Malaysia. Personal interviews were also carried out to support as well as to add depth to the quantitative data.
This report includes a detailed look at the global export market opportunities for wood household furniture. For U.S. manufacturers, potential markets are its NAFTA partners - Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and the Pacific Rim countries. However, U.S. companies need to focus more on exporting and not be totally dependent on the domestic markets.
As for Malaysian manufacturers, the U.S. will remain as the largest market for their products. However, this may change with the competition that Malaysia faces with other Asian nations such as China, Indonesia, and Thailand. Furthermore, Malaysia, a tropical wood producing country, may lose its market share if U.S. consumers start to demand environmentally friendly wood furniture products. / Ph. D.

Submitted in full requirement for the Degree Masters in Technology: Marketing, Technikon Natal, 2000. / It has been largely accepted that Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are principal driving forces in economic development (UN-ECE, 1999; Istomina, 1998; Lalkaka, 1996). However, many small, medium and micro enterprises are constrained by an array of problems such as a lack of access to finance, training services and physical infrastructure. Also, small, medium and micro enterprises are forced to operate in highly competitive environments and transition economies and this limits the ability of small, medium and micro enterprises and even large organisations to operate successfully and efficiently. Consequently, a strategy focused on inter-firm linkages and collaboration could alleviate the problems faced by small, medium and micro enterprises. Research indicates that inter-firm linkages or clustering can lead to the emergence of collective efficiency, which facilitates the industrialisation of SMMEs and has the potential of contributing to economic development (Schmitz, 1995). A cluster would involve interaction between enterprises or networks of enterprises that produce identical or similar products. These linkages create 'collective efficiency' which is critical in sustaining a competitive edge. Considerando a temática do mobiliário, este trabalho estuda, levanta e analisa as mudanças formais e funcionais ocorridas nas estantes residenciais de sala para equipamentos de som e imagem, a partir de 1950, data da chegada ao Brasil dos primeiros aparelhos de televisão, até os dias atuais. Tem como objetivo determinar quais os fatores que propiciaram ou condicionaram as alterações neste móvel, que vem acompanhando a evolução dos equipamentos aos quais dá suporte, considerando aspectos tecnológicos (processos produtivos, materiais utilizados), de projeto (concepção fundamentada ou não no Design de Produtos) ou sociais (relações com o usuário e com os ambientes onde está inserido). Para conhecimento dos processos produtivos atualmente empregados na fabricação das estantes e os produtos resultantes, procedeu-se a uma pesquisa qualitativa de dados primários, apoiada no estudo de casos de algumas empresas participantes do APL Movelaria Paulista (marca do Arranjo Produtivo Local de Móveis da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo). Os resultados retratam os modos de conceber e produzir estantes de madeira para uso residencial, que dão suporte aos equipamentos de som e imagem, apontando algumas categorias de marcenarias, estabelecidas em função do tipo de projeto e de produção decorrentes das trajetórias de cada empresa em direção à industrialização. / Concerning the furniture theme, this study raises and analyses changes regarding formats and functions that have occured in image and sound equipments in residential living rooms racks from 1950, date in which the first TV sets were introduced in Brazil, up today. The purpose is to determine which factors allowed or conditioned changes in this kind of furniture, keeping up with the evolution of the equipments to which gives support, considering the following aspects: technological (production processes, materials), project (product or non-product based conception design) or social (users and environment interaction in which it is inserted). In order to become acquainted with the productive processes currently used in rack manufacturing and related products, a primary qualitative data survey was conducted, supported by case studies of several companies that participate in the APL Movelaria Paulista (brand of São Paulo Metropolitan Area Furniture Productive Arrangement). The results portrait the ways to conceive and produce residential wood racks which give support to image and sound equipments, indicating several categories of wood furniture industries, established according to type of project and production line each company developed along the years, as it stepped into the industrialization age.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal investigar as estratégias competitivas em empresas de móveis para uso residencial, situadas no pólo industrial da região de Votuporanga SP. Como objetivo secundário busca-se aferir a integração da estratégia competitiva com a de produção e, conseqüentemente, apontar os fatores estruturais e infra-estruturais de processo produtivo que dão suporte a essa integração. Para isso, realizou-se revisão bibliográfica dos conceitos de estratégias competitivas e de produção, além de um estudo da história e características da indústria moveleira no Brasil e da região de Votuporanga - SP. Desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa de campo em onze empresas que consistiu de um levantamento descritivo exploratório. Os resultados da pesquisa revelaram que a maioria das empresas é considerada pequena, as quais mantêm linhas variadas de móveis retilíneos com estilo tradicional. A comercialização ocorre em um mercado amplo com pouca ou nenhuma diferenciação do produto, caracterizando a atuação da estratégia competitiva de menor custo. Os objetivos de desempenho de produção mais praticados pelas empresas são a qualidade do produto final e o custo. Contudo, os dados analisados indicaram a ausência de sistemas de medidas e a utilização de programas de treinamento voltados para a gerência da qualidade, que sustentam a esta prioridade competitiva. Além disso, encontraram-se diversos fatores que poderiam impedir o alinhamento da estratégia competitiva de menor custo com a prioridade competitiva custo. Não obstante, verificou-se que algumas decisões de produção tenderam a influenciar a redução do custo de fabricação. Concluiu-se que essas decisões são planejadas visando o curto prazo, inexistindo, assim, técnicas e práticas precisas para alcançar vantagens competitivas de menor custo no médio e longo prazos. / This work aims at investigating the existence of competitive strategies within the Home Wooden Furniture Industry at the industrial cluster in the city of Votuporanga (SP). As a secondary objective, the integration of competitive strategies with the production strategy were assessed, so that structural and infra structural factors of the productive process for this integration could be pointed out. To this end, a survey on the concepts of competitiveness and production strategies was presented as well as an overview on the Brazilian furniture companies history and characteristics, especially that of Votuporanga area. A case study was carried out on 11 furniture factories at Votuporanga area, which consisted of a descriptive-exploratory methods. The results have shown that the majority of the factory is considered small industry, which produce a varied number of straight line-like furniture of traditional style. The trading occurs in a broad market with little (or none) product differentiation, which is a clear indication of the least cost competitive strategy. The production performance objectives pointed out by the companies were the quality and the lowest cost. However, the data analysis has shown the lack of both measurement systems and employment of training programmes towards quality management which could support competitive priority of quality. Moreover, there have been found some impeding factors for the alignment of the least cost competitive strategy with the production performance objective of lowest cost. Nonetheless, it has been noticed that some decisions adopted in the production line seemed to have influenced the reduction on manufacturing costs. Then, it can be inferred that such decisions are only envisaged for the short run, where neither precise techniques nor practices take place. This prevents competitive advantages of lowest cost from being achieved on either a medium or a long run.

Previous issue date: 2010-06-29 / Nenhuma / O presente estudo trata da relação entre o contexto da indústria moveleira do Pólo Moveleiro de Bento Gonçalves e o design como diferencial competitivo para esse setor. Considerando a complexidade e o papel essencial da construção de problemas no processo de projeto parte-se do princípio de que o diferencial competitivo pode ser alcançado, entre outros fatores, pela participação do designer na construção do briefing para novos produtos e serviços. A pesquisa será desenvolvida na cidade de Caxias do Sul (RS) pertencente a esse pólo. Para isso, foi elaborado um referencial teórico onde se procurou contextualizar a indústria moveleira, enfatizando suas principais características e importância enquanto setor da economia, bem como abordar as principais contribuições do design no âmbito dessa indústria. A pesquisa de campo foi realizada no pólo mencionado por meio de entrevistas em profundidade aplicada na empresa SM Gestão e Negócios detentora da marca Saccaro, do segmento de móveis residências onde o público alvo consumidor é a classe "A" de médio porte. Com essa pesquisa foi possível obter dados que ao serem sistematizados, analisados e interpretados, permitirão traçar um perfil do segmento selecionado do pólo pesquisado, contribuindo para identificar se a influência do designer na elaboração do briefing pode ser um fator de diferenciação e competitividade, bem como, estabelecer inter relações entre o design e a diferenciação competitiva. / The present study deals with the relationship between the furniture industry context of the Bento Gonçalves city Furniture Pole and design as a competitive differential for this sector. Considering the complexity and the essential role of problem construction in the project process we take as a guideline that the competitive differential can be achieved, among other factors, through the participation of design in the briefing construction for new products and services. The research will be developed in Caxias do Sul city (RS) which belongs to this pole. In order to do so, a literature review was made in which we attempted to contextualize the furniture industry, emphasizing its main characteristics and importance as economic sector, as well as to approach the main contributions of design in the ambit of this industry. The field research will be carried out in the mentioned pole through depth interviews applied at the SM Gestão e Negócios company, which detains the Saccaro brand, part of the residential furniture segment, whose consuming
target group is the medium-sized "A" class. With this research we wish to obtain data that, being systematized, analyzed and interpreted, will allow us to trace a profile of the selected segment of the researched pole, contributing to identify whether the influence of the designer in the briefing elaboration can be a differentiation and competitiveness factor as well as to establish interrelations between design and competitive differentiation.

Understanding the Management Control System Used by Hybrid Companies : A Case Study of IKEA and MIO.Chaussée, Laury, Foray, Marine January 2018 (has links)
Due to the globalization, companies have to review their strategy permanently. In the same way, they need to choose the right management control system which will be in line with their strategy. Recent research has been made and it was highlighted that new strategies have been created to face up to the globalization and stay competitive. One of the new strategies is called “hybrid strategy”. It consists of combining the low-cost competitive advantage with the differentiation competitive advantage. By doing that, a company differentiates itself from its competitors with a special feature and, by the same time, has the lowest cost in its market. This new strategy came after the three generic strategies from Porter, which explains that a company needs to choose a competitive advantage if it wants to be profitable. The competitive advantages are either low-cost or differentiation. Most of the research made about the hybrid strategy was about the efficiency of this strategy. A very few research was made about the management of companies using the hybrid strategy. This is why in this paper, we would like to understand what kind of management control companies using this strategy have, more particularly do they use more a tight or a loose control. We also are looking at what kind of objectives companies using hybrid strategies have. If it is more a short-term or a long- term perspective and if it is more focused on monetary goals or non-monetary goals. For that, we compared the management control implemented in a hybrid company with the management controlled implemented in a low-cost company in Sweden. Four interviews were made at IKEA and MIO, which are two Swedish furniture companies in Sweden. To be able to draw a conclusion, we choose one hybrid company and one pure company to compare them. IKEA is the company using the hybrid strategy. These interviews gave us a lot of information to better understand the type of management control both companies have implemented. Then, the data were analyzed and discussed in order to highlight a potential conclusion. The gathered data suggest that hybrid companies and companies using a low-cost strategy have approximately the same management control system which is more tight control. About the objectives, both companies have the same. Indeed, IKEA and MIO have monetary goals and are more short-term goals oriented, at least for the lower level management. However, there are some differences that we can noticed. The first thing is that MIO uses more the informal control than IKEA. The second thing is that IKEA is more concerned by its employees. To conclude, even if IKEA and MIO are using two different strategies, they are very similar when looking to their management control.

O objetivo desta dissertação foi avaliar a estrutura e as potencialidades da indústria moveleira do Município de Boa Vista (Roraima). Para a obtenção dos dados, foram aplicados questionários a empresas filiadas ao Sindicato das Indústrias de Marcenaria do Estado de Roraima – SINDIMAR; de um total de 19 empresas, 15 responderam aos questionários, representando 78,9% da amostra. Procurou-se levantar dados de forma simplificada, mas que retratassem a real situação do setor. Além desses dados, se obteve outros de fontes secundárias e de estudos empíricos anteriores sobre o setor, além daqueles fornecidos por instituições como SEBRAE. A idéia foi efetuar sugestões visando o aumento da competitividade do setor, através de melhorias nas matérias-primas, mão-de-obra, tecnologia e design, para agregar maior valor ao produto final. A revisão da literatura focou a teoria da localização, a teoria dos pólos de crescimento e a teoria do desenvolvimento local endógeno, centrada no papel das inovações e dos atores locais. Ao visitar as empresas, procurou-se detectar suas deficiências e potencialidades. Com o diagnóstico da situação atual do setor, se identificou os fatores de seu sucesso e os que vêm dificultando o seu avanço, com o objetivo de motivar os empresários a investir nessa atividade. Constatou-se que a matéria-prima utilizada é oriunda de outros municípios do Estado de Roraima e que cerca de 80% da produção é destinado ao próprio Município de Boa Vista, enquanto que os outros 20% destina-se a outros municípios do Estado. Concluiu-se que o setor moveleiro de Boa Vista necessita de muitas melhorias, tanto no plano tecnológico, com máquinas mais modernas, como do ponto de vista de gestão e logística. As principais dificuldades enfrentadas pelo setor são a carência de mão-de-obra qualificada, a falta de capital de giro para investir em equipamentos apropriados, já que a produção é feita na maior parte de forma semi-artesanal, entre outros fatores. Nesse sentido, o setor necessita de mais apoio de órgãos oficiais de assistência e de crédito, a fim de promover o desenvolvimento do setor, independentemente do porte das empresas. / The objective of this study was to evaluate the structure and the potential of the furniture industry of the City of Boa Vista (Roraima). To attain the data, member companies of the Union of the Woodwork and Furniture Industries of the State of Roraima - SINDIMAR were given questionnaires; of a total of 19 companies, 15 answered and returned the questionnaires, representing 78.9% of the sample. The objective was to get data in a simplified form, but which portrayed the real situation of the sector. Besides the data obtained from the questionnaires, other secondary sources and previous empirical studies on the sector, was used as well as the data supplied by institutions such as SEBRAE. The idea was to effect suggestions aiming at the increase of the competitiveness of the sector, through improvements in the raw materials, man power and workmanship, technology and design, to add greater value to the final product. The revision of literature focused on the theory of the location, the theory of the growth in industrial poles and the theory of the endogenous local development, centered on the role of innovation and local actors. When visiting the companies, researchers sought to detect their deficiencies and potentialities. With the diagnosis of the current situation of the sector, the factors of success and the impairments that make it difficult to advance were identified, with the objective of motivating entrepreneurs to invest in this activity. Evidence shows that the raw material used is sourced from other cities within the State of Roraima and that about 80% of the production is destined to the very City of Boa Vista, while the other 20% goes to the other cities of the State. It was concluded that the woodwork and furniture sector of Boa Vista is in great need of improvement, as much in the technological field, with more modern machines, as in the area of logistic and management. The main difficulties faced by the sector are the lack of qualified labor, the lack of capital to invest in appropriate equipment, since the production is done for the most part on a half-artisan basis. With this in consideration, the sector needs more support from official agencies of assistance and credit, in order to promote the development of the sector, independent of the size of the companies.

Nesse sentido, tornam-se importantes os estudos sobre o setor industrial, por esse continuar mantendo-se como o setor de maior potencial indutor do crescimento econômico no Brasil. São Bento do Sul, situado no planalto norte de Santa Catarina, e assunto dessa dissertação, ocupa posição relevante no cenário da indústria moveleira do país, sendo responsável por quase a metade das exportações
brasileiras de móveis. Uma melhor compreensão da dinâmica da realidade do arranjo produtivo em questão, demanda a utilização de metodologia que se aplique à análise de

internacional, e que, a unidade básica de análise para se compreender a competição é a indústria, disponibiliza instrumental que permitiu pontuar os determinantes que
contribuíram para a formação das vantagens competitivas de São Bento do Sul. No decorrer da análise, revelou-se uma estrutura da indústria com forte poder de uma das
forças (compradores), personificada hoje, a nível local, pelas agências exportadoras. Em razão desse desequilíbrio em favor dos compradores, observado na estrutura da indústria, haverá um amplo direcionamento para a busca de vantagens de menor custo e não de diferenciação. Apresenta-se como de fundamental importância, o resgate da idéia de que a estrutura da indústria não é imutável, podendo as empresas com suas estratégias, influenciá-la a seu favor. de se pensar em sua inserção autônoma, ignorando o fato de que, o design estará sempre submetido a uma leitura econômica. / With the economic stabilization following the Real Plan in 1994, the focus of the economic agenda shifted from the obsessive fight to control inflation and payment
surpluses to new challenges such as sustainable growth, development microeconomics and competitiveness. In this sense, studies of the manufacturing segment in Brazil continue to be relevant as it is this segment that carries the largest potential to induce economic growth in the country. São Bento do Sul, located in the northern plains of Santa Catarina State, the focus of this study, holds a relevant position in the furniture manufacturing industry in Brazil, accounting for close to half of Brazilian furniture exports. In order to fully understand the dynamics of the productive equation it is imperative that we make use of a methodology that applies to industrial sectors. The theory of Competitive Advantage by Michael Porter, which establishes the concept that companies, not nations, are the ones that compete in international trade, and that the basic unit to understand competition
is the industry, offers the elements that determined the competitive advantages of São Bento do Sul. The analysis revealed that the industry had one powerful force buyers
expressed today at the local level by the exporting agencies. In view of this unbalance in favor of the buyers, the search for the competitive advantage will focus on lower cost and not differentiation. A critical aspect is the revelation that the structure of the industry
is not set in stone. Companies may influence in their favor through their strategies and positioning. Such actions could maximize the potential future involvement of the design industry, avoiding the mistaken view of its autonomous insertion, ignoring the fact that design will always be subjected to an economic analysis.

Small Industrial Enterprises Brasileiras (PEIBs) part of this global scenario, in particular, with many structural disadvantages when compared to large enterprises. It is noteworthy that the available literature and basic research are usually developed for large companies. The strategic factors that contribute to the manufacturing strategy of the business are also important for companies to have greater advantage in its sector. The conceptual basis was obtained by review of relevant studies ans research in the area of knowledge. Além desses dados, se obteve outros de fontes secundárias e de estudos empíricos anteriores sobre o setor, além daqueles fornecidos por instituições como SEBRAE. A idéia foi efetuar sugestões visando o aumento da competitividade do setor, através de melhorias nas matérias-primas, mão-de-obra, tecnologia e design, para agregar maior valor ao produto final. A revisão da literatura focou a teoria da localização, a teoria dos pólos de crescimento e a teoria do desenvolvimento local endógeno, centrada no papel das inovações e dos atores locais. Ao visitar as empresas, procurou-se detectar suas deficiências e potencialidades. Com o diagnóstico da situação atual do setor, se identificou os fatores de seu sucesso e os que vêm dificultando o seu avanço, com o objetivo de motivar os empresários a investir nessa atividade. Constatou-se que a matéria-prima utilizada é oriunda de outros municípios do Estado de Roraima e que cerca de 80% da produção é destinado ao próprio Município de Boa Vista, enquanto que os outros 20% destina-se a outros municípios do Estado. Concluiu-se que o setor moveleiro de Boa Vista necessita de muitas melhorias, tanto no plano tecnológico, com máquinas mais modernas, como do ponto de vista de gestão e logística. As principais dificuldades enfrentadas pelo setor são a carência de mão-de-obra qualificada, a falta de capital de giro para investir em equipamentos apropriados, já que a produção é feita na maior parte de forma semi-artesanal, entre outros fatores. Nesse sentido, o setor necessita de mais apoio de órgãos oficiais de assistência e de crédito, a fim de promover o desenvolvimento do setor, independentemente do porte das empresas. / The objective of this study was to evaluate the structure and the potential of the furniture industry of the City of Boa Vista (Roraima). To attain the data, member companies of the Union of the Woodwork and Furniture Industries of the State of Roraima - SINDIMAR were given questionnaires; of a total of 19 companies, 15 answered and returned the questionnaires, representing 78.9% of the sample. The objective was to get data in a simplified form, but which portrayed the real situation of the sector. Besides the data obtained from the questionnaires, other secondary sources and previous empirical studies on the sector, was used as well as the data supplied by institutions such as SEBRAE. The idea was to effect suggestions aiming at the increase of the competitiveness of the sector, through improvements in the raw materials, man power and workmanship, technology and design, to add greater value to the final product. The revision of literature focused on the theory of the location, the theory of the growth in industrial poles and the theory of the endogenous local development, centered on the role of innovation and local actors. When visiting the companies, researchers sought to detect their deficiencies and potentialities. With the diagnosis of the current situation of the sector, the factors of success and the impairments that make it difficult to advance were identified, with the objective of motivating entrepreneurs to invest in this activity. Evidence shows that the raw material used is sourced from other cities within the State of Roraima and that about 80% of the production is destined to the very City of Boa Vista, while the other 20% goes to the other cities of the State. It was concluded that the woodwork and furniture sector of Boa Vista is in great need of improvement, as much in the technological field, with more modern machines, as in the area of logistic and management. The main difficulties faced by the sector are the lack of qualified labor, the lack of capital to invest in appropriate equipment, since the production is done for the most part on a half-artisan basis. With this in consideration, the sector needs more support from official agencies of assistance and credit, in order to promote the development of the sector, independent of the size of the companies.
