A Practical Theology of Work and Leadership

Bates, Paul K 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to comprehend and respond to deterioration in what is considered to be a very significant foundation of human flourishing - a sense of vigour, vitality, purpose and meaningfulness in work. The term flourishing in the workplace is offered both in the sense that work satisfies a person's economic needs (fair pay and job security) and in the sense that it satisfies a person's deeper sense of vocation, of Spirit-led calling. This dissertation responds to the concerns that the postmodern workplace, for a number of reasons, inhibits a person's ability to flourish. Yet, this dissertation will argue, there is a deep thirst for meaningfulness in our daily endeavour. We are settling for less. From the research conducted, this dissertation develops an approach to practices of leadership that bring about deep purpose to be derived from our work. Further, this dissertation develops an approach for ministry that might facilitate these Spirit-led practices. The premise is that leadership that is self-centred must be transformed into leadership that is other-centred. Leadership is conceived as critical to the nurturing of human flourishing, ultimately affecting our behaviours beyond the workplace. There are two dimensions to the qualitative research designed for this dissertation, as described by the questionnaires completed by research respondents. The first is to seek an unaided broad response to questions regarding peoples' sense of purpose, self-esteem, value, and self-actualization. The second is to seek an understanding of the degree to which such responses are shaped by a person's sense of faith. Beyond these dimensions, the research explores the extent to which respondents engage with a minister or spiritual counsellor.

The Influence of Communication for the Future of the Physical Workplace

Hauksdóttir, Helga January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine employees' attitudes towards work shifting to the digital space and whether there will still be a need for the physical workplace in the future in relation to the development of information and communication technologies. For this study a survey was conducted to answer the following questions; how is the digital transformation of work affecting the workplace for employees in the Icelandic tech sector, what are the factors that affect the choice of workspace, and how can the choice of office space influence job satisfaction? Literature and theories about workplace development, digitalization, organizational communication and information, and communication technologies were used to gain a broader and deeper knowledge of the field. The study shows that it is likely that there are still some changes to take place in today's workplaces and that increased flexibility is one of those changes as 94.9% of participants in this research thought flexibility was an important feature for the organization to possess to be an attractive workplace. Face-to-face communication is more effective and there is still a need for the physical workplace according to the participants of this study. It is essential for organizations today to stay attractive and become more attractive in the eyes of current and future employees. The workplace needs to be a place where employees feel good and where they prefer to work so that face-to-face communication and relationships between co-workers and managers does not only take place in the digital environment. A balance between the physical and virtual office space needs to be the focus for organizations in the coming years. Subsequently, the results were compared with the theories and previous studies.

Implementing and managing a digital change: : A case study of how three different Swedish office-based organizations are managing a change to a Digital Workplace.

Selmanovic, Erik January 2018 (has links)
Change within organizations is something that happens every day. Lately, more and more continuous digital changes are occurring that all need good management. If an organization implement too many digital changes without the right management during the implementation and following the implementation, it may cause more problems than what is gained. The question is, do you manage a digital change as you manage an “ordinary” change? To find out how managers are leading digital change, a study of how one of the current digital changes, the digital workplace, has been completed to see how the implementation was/is managed and how the completed change is continuously managed. The findings show that some steps in the change process differ from earlier studies and needs to be considered, mostly policies of how digital work should be implemented and completed. And the overall wellness of the workforce is the most important factor of the continuous management. This study will add to the wide area of management, mostly to the digital management and especially to them, yet not studied, the area of the digital workplace. It will serve as an addition, focused on the digital workplace, to great and accepted management studies such as the 8-step model of leading change. The study will also give some valuable tips for the continuous management of a digital workplace.
