The application of H∞ controller synthesis to high speed independent drive systems

Beaven, Robert William January 1995 (has links)
This thesis describes work completed on the application of H controller synthesis to the design of controllers for single axis high speed independent drive design examples. H controller synthesis was used in a single controller format and in a self-tuning regulator, a type of adaptive controller. Three types of industrial design examples were attempted using H controller synthesis, both in simulation and on a Drives Test Facility at Aston University. The results were benchmarked against a Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) with velocity feedforward controller (VFF), the industrial standard for this application. An analysis of the differences between a H and PID with VFF controller was completed. A direct-form H controller was determined for a limited class of weighting function and plants which shows the relationship between the weighting function, nominal plant and the controller parameters. The direct-form controller was utilised in two ways. Firstly it allowed the production of simple guidelines for the industrial design of H controllers. Secondly it was used as the controller modifier in a self-tuning regulator (STR). The STR had a controller modification time (including nominal model parameter estimation) of 8ms. A Set-Point Gain Scheduling (SPGS) controller was developed and applied to an industrial design example. The applicability of each control strategy, PID with VFF, H, SPGS and STR, was investigated and a set of general guidelines for their use was determined. All controllers developed were implemented using standard industrial equipment.

Borecká, Jana January 2012 (has links)
1 Self-concept and the possibility of its formation in the educational process Title of the thesis: Self-concept and the possibility of its formation in the educational process Name and surname: Bc. Jana Borecká Department: of pedagogy, Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University in Prague Field of study: Pedagogy Head of the thesis: PhDr. Hana Krykorková, CSc. Number of pages: 108 Year of thesis defence: 2012 The key words: Identity Self Self - assurance Self - concept Self - esteem This thesis was based on my long interest in pedagogy and educational psychology. I was also inspired by my profession - a teacher, when I felt how important it is to understand people, their behavior and experience, and how often we are wrong and how a lack of knowledge about people can lead to wrong conclusions. Topis of this thesis is a big issue, it is a self-concept with a focus on the formation of pupils in the school context. The theoretical part of this thesis provides chapter, where I define the self-concept. I present different versions of this construct understanding and a lack of uniformity and diversity of views. In addition, I summarize the main formative influences on the formation of self-concept in different developmental stages of human being. Topic is further complemented with ideas of A. Adler, V.E. Enkele faktore wat die gemotiveerdheid van sekretariele studente beinvloed

13 November 2015 (has links)
M.Ed. / This study was aimed at investigating some of the factors influencing the motivation (willingness to learn) of secretarial students at the Technikon Witwatersrand. After the relevant literature had been studies, empirical information was obtained by means of a questionnaire specially compiled for this purpose. This questionnaire was completed by all first year students who registered at the Secretarial School in 1983 and an analysis of the responses was made. It became evident from the literature that the personality of the first year student is still in a stage of development and is consequently subject to much change. Advanced cognitive abilities must therefore in this phase of life be further development together with the personality. At the same time, the establishment of a positive self image and own identity during this period, is a prerequisite for a meaningful willingness to learn and for the student to identify with a particular future career. It needs to be mentioned that a student who has a negative self image as a result of unsatisfactory learning progress at school, may anticipate further failure at tertiary level. This anticipation of unsatisfactory future learning progress has a restraining effect on the student's willingness to learn. A person generally has an intense desire to prove himself or to realise his potential. Self actualization is possible, inter alia, by achieving success in some area. When a person becomes aware of a gap in his existing cognitive frame of reference, he may also search for the cause of this uneasy feeling and attempt in future to avoid similar con flicting incidents. There has until now been no research into the factors influencing the motivation (willingness to learn) of the secretarial students at the Technikon Witwatersrand. In the course of this study, factors that have a negative influence on the motivation of this group of learners were identified. Further research on learning motivation in this school is essential in order to gain more insight into the problem areas mentioned.

The role of the breast and the uterus in a woman's feminine self-concept: a cross-cultural investigation

Kuny, Hillary 02 July 2015 (has links)
The present study Investigated the role of the breast and the uterus in the feminine self-concept of black and white South African women. It was hypothesised that the loss of the breast would be more traumatic for the white woman than for the black woman. This rested on the belief that the role of the female breast as an erotic stimulus for the male and an assurance of femininity for the female appears to be more pronounced in Western society than in African societies. In addition, it was suggested that the loss of the uterus would be more traumatic for the black woman than for the white woman as the meaning of the uterus appears to go beyond that of a childbearing organ, in so far as it is linked wo the issue of sexual desirability* Two groups of black women undergoing mastectomy and hysterectomy and two groups of white women undergoing similar operations were assessed pre- and postoperatively. Women completed the Berscheid, Walster and Bohrnstedt Body Image Scale (1972) which elicited data on body image, self-concept and satisfaction with intimate relationships. The observed data were analysed using analyses of convariance. No significant differences between the black and white

Adolescent and staff experience of self-cutting behaviour in residential settings : a qualitative study

Norris, Vivien January 1997 (has links)
This qualitative study explored the subjective experiences of young people and staff around self-cutting behaviour in residential settings. Ten young people and twelve staff members from three settings were interviewed. Three main areas were explored: 1) explanatory frameworks used to make sense of cutting; 2) the impact of cutting on others; 3) staff responses to cutting and how these were experienced by young people. An interpretative phenomenological approach was used to analyse the data. A wide range of accounts was articulated and there was a high level of consistency in the data. Intrapersonal explanations for cutting predominated, but the cutting had a powerful and generally negative effect on others. The role of carer was identified as central and parallel processes occurred for young people and staff when they were in the carer role. The findings were discussed and developed into a model which attempted to bring together the intrapersonal and interpersonal cycles that appeared to be operating. Wider social issues were also considered. It appeared that the phenomenon of self-cutting occurred in the context of overwheh-ning experiences which were unbearable for all concerned. There was significant difficulty in integrating the confusing and conflicting experiences associated with cutting and this led to polarised and rigid views. It was concluded that a multi-dimensional approach which includes intrapersonal, interpersonal and group processes as well as wider social issues is needed to increase understanding of this challenging area. The findings were related to the literature and research and clinical implications suggested.

Electrophysiological Studies of a Retinal Prosthetic Prototype

Huang, Fei 24 August 2012 (has links)
"Retinal prostheses are becoming a viable therapy for inner retinal degeneration caused by age related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The majority of ocular and periocular prosthetic devices employ photodiodes and a microelectrode interface to convert light into a nerve impulse within the retina. Problems with this design include the need of an external power source, the lack of biocompatibility of the microelectrode array, and the need for complicated surgical procedures. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) technology offers an alternative strategy, where neurons can be stimulated by light activation of a single layer of a photovoltaic SAM. We have developed a SAM structure where the photoexcitable dye 2-[2-[4-(dibutylamino)phenyl]ethenyl]-3-caboxymethylbenzothiazolium bromide (NK5962) was covalently immobilized to an indium tin oxide (ITO) and 3-(aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) surface. The NK562 derivatized surface was characterized through contact angle goniometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, grazing angle infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrophotometry. NG108-15 neurons were differentiated onto the surface and neural responses from electrical stimulation and photostimulation of the system were measured using whole-cell current and voltage clamp methodologies. We found an average 2.9 mV decrease in NG108-15 threshold potential for every 10 mV increase in ITO surface potential. Following photostimulation, there was a 1.8±0.2 fold increase (p < 0.05) in the sodium channel current amplitude and a 2.00 ± 0.22 fold increase (p < 0.05 ) in voltage amplitude of NG108-15 neurons on the ITO-APTMS-NK5962 surface due to transfer of energy from the excited dye surface to the attached neurons. The degree of photostimulation decreased upon using 344, 430, and 603 nm optical filters to block increasing amounts of the wavelengths of incident light capable of being absorbed by NK5962. The sodium current amplitude slightly increased at 50% transmittance of incident light relative to 100% transmittance, then sharply decreased at 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.13% transmittance. Upon addition of tetrodotoxin (TTX), sodium channel blockage was observed and portrayed by decreased sodium current and voltage response amplitudes, validating the voltage and current clamp results described above. Our findings indicate that the NK5962 photoelectric film shows promise as an implant for restoring light sensitivity to the retina. "

Clube das 5 : transformação e Criação de Si em Práticas Cinematográficas no Espaço Escolar

Caldas, Luciana Tubello January 2016 (has links)
This research deals with the relations between film and education. It focuses on the work of children and teenagers’ formation, part of the Project of Audiovisual Production Clube das 5 – a project of workshops that takes place at public schools in the city of Alvorada, situated in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre/RS. The objective is to discuss the educational and formational potential of film, mediated by the figure of the master. We study the strategies used by teacher André Bozzetti, who in 2013 idealized the project, inviting his students, of the 4th and 8th years of Elementary School from Emília de Oliveira Municipal School. Methodologically, we are inspired by the ethnographic making, to raise, compose and present research data. Basically, we operate with the writings of field reports. As a theoretical referential, we center the discussion on the concepts of formation, psychagogy and parrhesia, as pointed by Foucault in The Hermeneutics of the Subject. We aim to undertake a description of the choices of a master that puts film in discourse, having as his or her objective not only the transmission of certain knowledge but also possible modes of transformation of young subjects. In other words, we treat the figure of the master that is forged in the scope of psychagogy. Finally, we come up with the hypothesis that “Clube das 5” figures as a space of production of truths that propel ethical and aesthetical conducts – in the Foucaultian sense. One of these conducts refers to the idea of a shared process – between teacher and student – of knowledge formation and production. Thus, the propositions of a classical type of formation, which supposes the subject as lack or “not knowledge”, are stressed. Registered and analyzed data evidences choices that scape an education that ignores such diverse repertoires and desires, betting, on the contrary, in the potential of practices of formation of the self, through the art of film and creation.
