Global warming and pollution are recurring issues in all meetings of international summits, because the world is seeking a new way to get their main energy demands and / or natural resources. The exchange of the current energy matrix will not be made in one day, the initiatives has been showing gradually, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and biofuels seem to wave to a less catastrophic future. However, it is necessary to develop, seek for new sources and crops that have higher efficiency, lower cycle, higher yield and other characteristics. To this end, sometimes the History has shown that in order to find solutions for the future we need to look to the past. So millenarian crops has been proven effective nowadays. One of these crops is Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L), a millenary plant that used to be an oil and pigment source and which will now be adopted as an object of study. Within this context, this work is organized in two research fronts and the first one is to evaluate the effectiveness of a safflower byproduct and its use in animal feed, and the second one is to evaluate the effectiveness of safflower oil as a possible source of bio-fuel by the transesterification method. The expected contribution is the seal of safflower use and its by-products as candidates for agricultural frontier expansion in Brazil's energy oil production. The intent is to alter the concentration of the traditional diet with addition of safflower meal, which is obtained by cold extrusion grain of 0.5, 10, 15 and 20% order, with a concentration in each sample triplicated in a total of 15 samples. This first step is to analyze the effectiveness of animal growth with the addition of this element in the standard feed. After this first check, there is a new verification phase from the oil generated by the extrusion of safflower. This step is to evaluate the safflower oil as a possible source for the production of bio-fuel by the transesterification method. Analysis of factors, such as viscosity, will be made, calorific value, acid value, free fatty acids and peroxides indexes fall on standards set by the National Petroleum Agency. Understanding it if it is a candidate for the agricultural frontier expansion in Brazil's energy production of oil.

Linkage mapping, phenotypic characterization, and introgression analysis of crosses with safflower (Carthamus tinctorius)

Archibald, Catherine J. 06 1900 (has links)
An inter-specific linkage map of a backcross (BC1) population derived from a cross between C. tinctorius and C. oxyacanthus was developed using primarily microsatellite markers. A composite map, which aligned the inter-specific (C. tinctorius x C. oxyacanthus) map with an intra-specific linkage map previously developed from an F2 population of C. tinctorius, was created to search for syntenic regions. Results indicate that despite low marker saturation, there is substantial colinearity between the two linkage maps, and one translocation or inversion event. Upon subsequent self-fertilization events, phenotypes of the inter-specific backcross population were characterized in both the field (BC1S2 generation) and growth chamber (BC1S2 and BC1S3 generations), and identified several lines of agronomic interest. Introgression analysis was performed (BC1S3 generation) to assess the level of integration of C. oxyacanthus DNA into the C. tinctorius genome, and results are suggestive of less inter-specific recombination than expected. / Plant Biology

Fernandez, Paola Alejandra 20 May 2016 (has links)
The Argentine oil seed industry has shown an increasing interest in hulling safflower fruit before the oil extraction process. Fruit dehulling would make it possible to decrease the volume of material circulating in the extraction system, the amount of waxes and pigments in the oil, and fiber content in the meal. The extent that hullability (H), the ease with which the pericarp separates from the seed relates to genetic variability and crop management has not been assessed. The objectives of this thesis were to assess during two consecutive growth cycles (GC): 1) the H of different safflower varieties grown in Argentina, 2) the quality of safflower meal obtained from dehulled and un-dehulled fruits, 3) the morphological characteristics of the fruits and the anatomic characteristics of the pericarp of different varieties and 4) how H is affected by different sowing rates and row spacing. The varietal trial was conducted at the Agricultural Experimental Station of INTA Hilario Ascasubi (Lat 39 ° 23'S, 62 ° 37 'W) and included seven safflower genotypes: Agrosearch L7-3, AG Phoenix, CW 99 OL, Arizona L7-5, 93079 Knowles, L-8, Seedtech S-345. The effect of two sowing rates (low (L): 7,5 kg ha-1 and high (H): 22,5 kg ha-1) and three row spacing (35 cm, 52 cm and 70 cm) on CW 99 OL fruit H was evaluated at the same experimental site. H of all varieties was between 15 and 46% higher in the first GC with respect to the second (p<0,01). H was similar among varieties (68 to 76% in the first GC and from 58 to 60% in the second one), except L-8 in the first GC and L-8 and Agrosearch L7-3 in the second GC (p<0,01). In all varieties, the percentage of mechanically extracted hull was 20-25% in the first GC and 16-21% in the second GC. Although fruit moisture at dehulling (5%) was similar between GC (p>0,05), fine production was reduced by half in the second GC (7% to 10,6%) with respect to the first GC (17% to 23%) in all varieties (p<0,01). Dehulling increased the content of proteins in the residual meal of all varieties, from 26% to 50% in the first GC and from 28% to 40% in the second (p<0,01). It also reduced the content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from 40,9% to 31,3% (p<0,01) and of two of its components (cellulose and hemicelluloses; p<0,05), as acid detergent lignin content (ADL) remained invariable (p>0,05). These results show that during fruit dehulling only the non-sclerified strata located below the pericarp outer epidermis would be separated. Although some differences were observed among varieties or GC in fruit physical parameters (p<0,05), they were not correlated with the variability observed in fruit H. Fruit fat content (FC) was higher than 32% (p<0,01), except in L-8 (24,4%) and CW 99 OL (26,7%) in the first GC, and 41% in the second GC, except in L-8 (19,7%). Total sclerification (S) comprised between 47 and 50% of the pericarp strata in all varieties, except in Knowles 93079 (68,6%). The content of NDF (85,7% vs 82,3%), cellulose (C; 39,3% vs 37,3%) and ADL (22,5% vs 20,5%) of the pericarp were higher in the second GC (p<0,01). H was correlated with the increase in protein content (r = 0,75 **) in the flour of partially dehulled fruit regarding whole fruit flour; and negatively with the percentage of S (r = -0,49 **), NDF (r = -0,73 **), C (r = -0,53 **) and ADL (r = -0,73 **) of the pericarp. Sowing rates was the main source of variation in crop yield (H: 3841,1 kg ha-1; L: 3190,8 kg ha-1) and capitulum (H: 582,2; L: 386,9) and fruit number per unit area (H: 14832; L: 9777; p<0,01). In turn, the yield was lower (p<0.05) in the 52 cm row spacing (3285,5 kg ha-1) than for the 70 cm (3591,3 kg ha-1) and 35 cm (3671 kg ha-1) row spacing. Thousand fruit weight (40,6 g in the first GC; 41,7 g in the second GC) and H (70% in the first GC; 60,3% in the second) did not differ (p>0,05) between any of the distances between rows or sowing rates assessed. This is the first analysis of the relationship of H with fruit structural parameters and meal quality of whole and dehulled fruits of different safflower varieties. The results obtained indicated that dehulling would improve residual meal quality and that pericarp thickness and sclerification reduction of the oil high yield safflower varieties would positively affect their H, so that selection in favor of both parameters would be beneficial.

Phytotherapics correspond to a significant principle of biologically ative natural products, many of which constituted models for the synthesis of a large number of drugs. Therefore, inserts it the Carthamus tinctorius, a plant that is part of the family Asteraceae, presenting themselves as a crop adapted to adverse conditions, being cultivated worldwide due to its medicinal properties. The Carthamus tinctorius contains a high quality oil rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The herb has potential for improvement through molecular breeding programs due to the availability of significant genetic and phenotypic diversity. In order to evaluate the angiogenic and genotoxic activities of safflower oil, angiogenesis tests were carried out on the chorioallantoid membrane (MCA) of embryonated chicken egg and micronucleus test on hematopoietic bone marrow of mice, where the results of the test in MCA Indicated that the oil caused a significant increase of the vascular network (p <0.05) in relation to the neutral and inhibitory controls. In the micronucleus test, the doses of 500, 1,000 and 1,500 mg.kg-1 were used. No genotoxic activity was observed at doses of 500 and 1,000, since the number of micronuclei in relation positive control doxorubicin (DXR) towas lower (p <0.05). However at the dose of 1,500, the genotoxic effect was observed, since the micronucleus values detected were similar to those of the positive control. In view of the techniques and conditions employed, the conclusions of this study reinforce that safflower oil presents therapeutic potential, with angiogenic activity and absence of genotoxicity in doses of 500 and 1,000 mg.kg-1. However, it should be consumed moderately because of the mutagenic activity found in high doses.

These sources are limited and estimated to be exhausted in the future, therefore, the search for alternative sources of energy is paramount. Currently, there is considerable interest in making trade sustainable biodiesel, a fuel alternative to fossil fuels, due to its renewable nature and environmental benefits of its use in large scale. This trend has led the Brazilian government to establish a program (Probiodiesel) with the aim of introducing biodiesel into the national energy matrix, by addition of 5% biodiesel to conventional diesel in 2010 to foster not only the increase of renewable energy, but reduce imports of crude oil. This work evaluates different methods of extraction of oil Carthamus tinctorius L., their characterization by IR, 1H and 13C NMR, HPLC and TG and their use in the production of methyl ester (molar ratio of oil / alcohol 1:6, and NaOH catalyst). The physico-chemical parameters (acid value, density, viscosity, saponification index and surface tension) of oil and biodiesel were also described. The produced biodiesel had a yield of 93.65%, was characterized in relation to their physicochemical properties showing satisfactory results (density=875 kg/m3, viscosity = 6.22 mm2/s, AI = 0.01 mg (NaOH) /g) compared with the values established by the the National Agency Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels / A maior parte da energia consumida no mundo prov?m do petr?leo, do carv?o e do g?s natural. / Safflower is an oilseed that has attracted national interest in agriculture, as is presented as an option for the second-crop cultivation (fall-winter). However, for expansion of safflower cultivation in Brazil is a need for studies addressing their growth and nutrient uptake in their stages of development in different growth conditions, as the knowledge of these variables will enable precision in fertilizer recommendation for the crop. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the accumulation of dry matter (DM) and macronutrients over the cycle, grain yield, and macronutrient removal by safflower genotypes as affected by sidedressed nitrogen (N) fertilization in no-till system (NTS) with different adoption times. The experiment was conducted in Botucatu-SP, in a Typic Rhodudalf soil. It was adopted a randomized block design in a split-plot scheme with four replications. The plots were composed by eight treatments obtained from the combination of two adoption times of the NTS (NNTS - a newly implemented no-tillage system and ENTS - an established no-till system, with 28 years since the establishment), two safflower genotypes (IMA 2234 and IMA 2237) and two levels of sidedressed N fertilization in topdressing (0 and 100 kg ha-1). The subplots were composed of seven sampling dates (from 22 days after emergence (DAE) by the end of the cycle). Both safflower genotypes had slow accumulation of DM and macronutrients during the rosette stage (0-22 DAE). From this stage until the early grain filling (between 84 and 111 DAE) was the period of greatest growth and accumulation of macronutrients by crop. The genotype IMA 2234 have higher amounts of DM, N, P, K and S accumulated in the shoot. Sidedressed N fertilization influenced mainly N uptake. The yield components, grain yield, and nutrient removal were not influenced by genotype, adoption times of the NTS or sidedressed N fertilization. The uptake of macronutrient was, on average of treatments: K (168 kg ha-1) > N (149 kg ha-1) > Ca (125 kg ha-1) > S (15 kg ha-1) > Mg (14 kg ha-1) > P (13 kg ha-1). The removal of macronutrients by grains followed the sequence, on average of treatments: N (44 kg ha-1) > K (12 kg ha-1) > Ca (6 kg ha-1) > P (4 kg ha -1) > Mg (3 kg ha-1) > S (2 kg ha-1). / FAPESP: 2014/20301-8

The new development strategies should operate mainly in the areas of energy efficiency and sustainable agriculture. Thus, the substitution of fossil fuels with biofuels, such as biodiesel, is increasingly on the agenda. The cultivation of oilseed plants for biodiesel production must take place in integrated systems that enable best environmental benefits and are more economically significant. The objectives of this study were to assess the morphological, anatomic, and physiological characteristics of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L., promising oilseed for biodiesel production) grown in monoculture and intercropping with cowpea bean (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.); and identify socioeconomic family farmers and verify their acceptance about safflower as an energy crop. The methodology used for the analysis of safflower growth in monoculture and intercropped with beans, were morphoanatomical and histochemical analyzes, made with samples of plants grown in the field in two cropping systems throughout the range of the life cycle of these plants. There were no changes in growth and anatomy of plants, even in the consortium, which is satisfactory to indicate the intercropping system for those crops and can be a good alternative for the family farmer, who may have safflower as a source of income without giving up planting their livelihood. To check the acceptance of safflower by farmers, interviews were made to family farmers by Canudos agrovila in Cear?-Mirim/RN. It was noticed that many of them accept the introduction of safflower as oil crop, although unaware of the species, and that, being more resistant to drought, safflower help in the stability of families who depend on the weather conditions for success their current crops. In general, it is concluded that safflower has features that allows it to be grown in consortium for biodiesel production combined with the production of food, such as cowpea, and can be used enabling better development for family farmers.
