Gandalf’s transformation in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings : An analysis according to Jung’s individuation theory

Gräsbeck, Gunnar January 2024 (has links)
Introduction: Gandalf’s transformation from Grey to White is an impactful moment in The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien. Gandalf’s reunion with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli in The Two Towers (642-652), after being assumed dead by the hands of a Balrog in “The Fellowship of the Ring” (Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring, 429-431), comes as a surprise both for the fictional characters in question and the reader. It is not only revealed that Gandalf is alive, but that he has returned stronger and wiser than prior to his battle with Balrog. This emerges mainly from his change in attire, from Grey to White: “They all gazed at him. His hair was white as snow in the sunshine; and gleaming white was his robe; the eyes under his deep brows were bright, piercing as the rays of the sun; power was in his hand. Between wonder, joy, and fear theystood and found no words to say” (Tolkien, The Two Towers, 645)

Modernized Myth, Beowulf, J.R.R. Tolkien, and The Lord of the Rings

Simpson, Dale W. (Dale Wilson) 05 1900 (has links)
This study views J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy against its Anglo-Saxon background, specifically in light of Tolkien's 1936 Beowulf essay, and contends that the author consciously attempted to recreate the mood of the heroic poem. Chapter I compares Tolkien's use of historical perspective in Lord of the Rings with that of the Beowulf poet. His recognition of the poet's artistic use of history is stated in the "Beowulf" essay. Chapter II makes comparisons between Good and Evil as they are revealed in Beowulf and in the trilogy. Once again, much of the evidence for this comparison is found in Tolkien's Beowulf criticism. Chapter III examines the comitatus relationship fundamental to the heroic poem and to Lord of the Rings. It is the major element in Tolkien's portrayal of Good. Chapter IV concludes the study by asserting that the trilogy must be viewed as an heroic elegy, in exactly the same way that Tolkien viewed Beowulf. Thus, the theme of the trilogy, like Beowulf, is the mutability of man.

Em boa companhia: a amizade em O senhor dos Anéis / In good company: friendship in The Lord of the Rings

Semmelmann, Cristina Casagrande de Figueiredo 24 March 2017 (has links)
It draws our attention the fact that a work like The Lord of The Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien, involves not only a single hero, but many characters with a common goal: the destruction of the Ring of Power. They connect with each other and reveal feelings we find day by day in our lives journey: they become friends. This project aims, therefore, to analyze how friendship in the Tolkienian work collaborates for the characters development, as well as it contributes for the success of their final goal. To achieve this, we will take as theoretical basis the book Nicomachean Ethics, by Aristotle, a work that essentially proposes to study happiness, in other words, the ultimate purpose of man (eudaimonia). By annihilating the Ring, the Tolkienian saga heroes achieve their great desire, and what happens then is what Tolkien calls the happy ending, which is essential to fairy stories. Still within the Aristotelian line of thought, friendship would be both a symptom of a human beings happiness and a requirement to reach this full achievement. Since Tolkiens imaginary understanding is based on, among other issues, the religious mindset, we will take theology as support, especially Summa Theologica, by Thomas Aquinas, by seeing, in friendship, a direct association with the Christian charity. Since we understand that, in our present days, the centrality of the book allows other artistic productions, we will also base this study on The Lord of The Rings movie adaptations, directed by the New Zealander filmmaker Peter Jackson. Such comparative analysis aims to bring more elements to the study of friendship in Tolkiens narrative, since the contemporary man, especially the young one, shows an increasing interest in the audiovisual universe, often starting with it and then moving on to literature. We believe that this is a timely project, since both the book and the movies in question involve and fascinate their readers and spectators, contributing to the development of their ethical thinking and character, acting as a reference to many fantasy gender works, in many platforms.

R. R. Tolkien. / This dissertation intends to analyse the female characterization in the novel The Silmarillion, written by J. R. R. Tolkien. This novel has a fantastic tone, and it is part of a mythology created by its author; the characters have features that go from human to divine, and most of them are formed by men that act as heroes. The present study focuses on the female characters of the novel, and through the analysis of their physical and psychological descriptions, actions, features, in short, their constructions, it intends to determine the author’s way of representation; so, it will be possible to reach a reflection about the importance of these characters in the Tolkienian mythology, to which The Silmarillion figures as the initial point. It is also necessary to unmask the influence of political, social and historical factors on the creation and development of these characters. The novel gives an account on the facts that figure as a mythical background to the world where it is placed, Middle-earth. The events that were the origin to everything, beings and places, feelings, Evil and its eternal fight against Good for power, are told. We intend to achieve this goal with the support of many theories, especially the feminist trend of literary criticism that deals with the role of woman as a reader of texts written by men, as it is the case. We also wish to contribute to the growing interest on the works of the English author, who was left at the edge of the canon by the specialized critics, so that it is possible to recognize the importance of his work at his time, and also the importance of his female characters.

Awakening a World With Words: How J.R.R. Tolkien Uses Linguistic Narrative Techniques to Take His Readers to Faery in His Short Story Smith of Wootton Major.

Pueppke, Michael 08 1900 (has links)
J.R.R. Tolkien uses specific linguistic narrative techniques in Smith of Wootton Major to make the world of Wootton Major and the nearby land of Faery come to life for his readers. In this thesis, I examine how Tolkien accomplishes this feat by presenting a linguistic analysis of some parts of the story. My analysis is also informed by Tolkien's own ideas of fairy-stories, and as such, it uniquely shows the symbiotic relationship between Tolkien's theories and his narrative art.

Tolkien : essai d'une lecture philosophique

Robert, Kevin 10 February 2024 (has links)
The Lord Of The Rings.

Kalevala jako zdroj inspirace pro J. R. R. Tolkiena / The Kalevala as a Source of Inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien

Kujal, Petr January 2019 (has links)
This master's thesis deals with the influence of The Kalevala and the Finnish language on the English writer John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and his work. The main purpose is to provide a possibly most complex description of The Kalevala's influence on Tolkien. Firstly, the background of The Kalevala, the role of Elias Lönnrot during its birth and its importance, and secondly, Tolkien, his work and his discovery of The Kalevala are introduced. The main part of the thesis focuses on Tolkien's inspiration by The Kalevala out of three different perspectives. The first one is the influence of the Finnish language on Quenya, one of Tolkien's fictional languages. The second one is The Kalevala's importance for Tolkien from a general point of view - especially the influence of Lönnrot's role, The Kalevala's mythology, several abstract aspects of The Kalevala led by the importance of singing and The Kalevala's structure is crucial. The third one is Tolkien's inspiration by The Kalevala from a concrete point of view. Particularly the importance of The Kalevala's character Väinämöinen and the story of the Sampo is significant here.

ÉOWYN, A SENHORA DE ROHAN: UMA ANÁLISE LINGÜÍSTICO-DISCURSIVA DA PERSONAGEM DE TOLKIEN EM O SENHOR DOS ANÉIS

Pinheiro, Renata Kabke 23 February 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-22T17:27:40Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Renata Kabke Pinheiro.pdf: 1070062 bytes, checksum: 39cf8c3a889d01f34560f738bb29591e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-02-23 / This work comprises a linguistic-discursive analysis of the character Eowyn in the novel The Lord of The Rings (1954-1955) by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973). The main objective addresses the investigation of the presence of myths about the power, the role and the depiction of women in the discourse about and attributed to that character within the book. The theoretical support which was used is based on the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model of Norman Fairclough (2001), the postulates of Mikhail Bakhtin (1992, 1993 and 1997) and the concept of myth of Roland Barthes (1980). Divided into three chapters, after the theorethical part where we also make some considerations about gender we present the author, the book and the character. Next, we describe the methodology used for the analysis and discuss the data with reference to: a) the depiction of women especially the one represented by the epithet The White Lady of Rohan and connected to the myth of feminility; b) the power of women, as belonging/granted to or taken from them; c) the role of women, with emphasis on the gender dichotomy and on the roles traditionally and hegemonically considered male or female . The study concludes that our research hypothesis that, although the discourse attributed to and about Éowyn apparently seems to be a breakthrough so as to questions of hegemonic power in gender relations, it in fact perpetuates myths related to the power, the role and the depiction of women finds its corroboration in the linguistic materiality of J.R.R. Tolkien s text. Tolkien

O diálogo intermidiático entre A sociedade do anel e The lord of the rings online (lotro) : aspectos de remidiação, meia-realidade, estrutura e ficção interativa

Martinez, Lis Yana de Lima January 2017 (has links)
This M.A. thesis analyses the intermediatic dialogue established between The Fellowship of the Ring, a book written by Professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 - 1973), and The Lord of the Rings Online (Lotro), a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game. Here, I intend to explain important aspects for the construction of this dialogue such as how it is created and how it has been articulating itself, focusing, according to Comparative Literature Studies’, on the remediation process and on aspects such as structure, half-reality and interactive fiction, characteristic of the interaction between both media. John R. R. Tolkien’s book has gone through several complex processes of (re)mediation, being The Lord of the Rings Online one of them. The game features the part of Middle-Earth that is told in the first two volumes of The Lord of the Rings. Lotro guides its players through missions called epic quests, which follow the nine members of the fellowship of the ring to the great battles at Mordor. The analysis proposed starts from the problematic issue of classifying what a medium is (MCLUHAN, 2013), the way through which media relate to one another and the context in which they are created (BOLTER; GRUSIN, 2000), adding the theoretical postulates of videogames. It is a comparative analysis that includes, as an example of the appropriate differences in structural articulations and other aspects, the passage (VAN TIEGHEM, 1931) from literature into videogame as a successful exchange that values both media, while promoting new experiences to the reader.
