D'enfant intrigué par des inscriptions en gallois, Tolkien évolue vers un apprentissage précoce du latin, du grec et de nombreuses langues anciennes. Sa passion pour les langues ne se dément pas: bientôt il travaille à l'élaboration de langues inventées basées sur le finnois, puis il fonde un club de lecture de sagas en norrois. Dans son étude des langues, il s'intéresse aux anciens textes qui recèlent leur évolution: très vite, pour lui, le langage et le mythe sont indissociables. Le langage génère du mythe et ce dernier survit à travers les langages. Du propre aveu de l'auteur, c'est pour donner vie à ses langues inventés qu'il créa leur monde: « [...] il lui fallait une « histoire » pour lui servir de base. [...] Il mettait ce langage au point, maintenant il lui fallait trouver les gens dont ce serait la langue. » (Carpenter, 2002). En marge de ses recherches universitaires, il construit donc sa mythologie personnelle, un travail étalé sur toute une vie dont quelques vingt ans sur le seul Seigneur des Anneaux pour lequel il s'attarde minutieusement sur chaque mot: « It was begun in 1936, and every part has been written many times. Hardly a word in its 600 000 or more has been unconsidered. » (Carpenter, 1981). En parcourant la biographie de ce linguiste-écrivain, qui peut se surprendre de voir le langage comme personnage principal de son oeuvre Le Seigneur des Anneaux? Son récit se veut une reconstruction moderne basée sur les légendes anciennes qu'il affectionne et il y inclut à cet effet nombre des éléments langagiers, relevant souvent de la pensée mythique, qui donnent à ces récits anciens leur saveur particulière. Parmi ces éléments, nous avons relevé le traitement accordé à la nomination et celui accordé aux manifestations de la parole poétique que sont ces chants et poèmes que l'on retrouve égrenés dans la narration en prose. En premier lieu, nous exposerons l'intérêt de l'auteur pour le langage et les littératures médiévales (principalement germaniques et finnoise), notamment pour leurs techniques langagières particulières. Nous nous appuierons en cela sur ses essais consacrés aux sources et à la genèse du texte (Tolkien, 1981, 1997). Puis, nous mettrons en relief ce qui, de la pensée mythique, éclaire la perspective et l'utilisation par Tolkien du nom et de la parole poétique avec l'appui de l'essai de Mircea Eliade: Aspects du mythe. Ensuite, il nous faudra étudier la littérature médiévale germanique avec l'aide des ouvrages de Régis Boyer y ayant trait. Nous pourrons ensuite nous pencher sur la question du traitement de la nomination dans l'oeuvre de Tolkien: quel est sa nature, son sens et ses fonctions pour le récit et qu'est-ce qui la rattache à la pensée mythique? Enfin, nous nous intéresserons aux nombreux chants et poèmes propres à l'oeuvre. Nous verrons comment ils définissent des cultures, relatent un passé et des mythes; bref, comment ils ajoutent à la cohérence et à la profondeur de l'univers fictif dépeint. Ainsi, et plus que de simples artifices stylistiques, ces manifestations langagières singulières qui imprègnent Le Seigneur des Anneaux participent de la structure même du récit et sont étroitement liées à la pensée mythique: le langage, le mot, a un véritable pouvoir chez Tolkien. This study views J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy against its Anglo-Saxon background, specifically in light of Tolkien's 1936 Beowulf essay, and contends that the author consciously attempted to recreate the mood of the heroic poem. Chapter I compares Tolkien's use of historical perspective in Lord of the Rings with that of the Beowulf poet. His recognition of the poet's artistic use of history is stated in the "Beowulf" essay. Chapter II makes comparisons between Good and Evil as they are revealed in Beowulf and in the trilogy. Once again, much of the evidence for this comparison is found in Tolkien's Beowulf criticism. Chapter III examines the comitatus relationship fundamental to the heroic poem and to Lord of the Rings. It is the major element in Tolkien's portrayal of Good. Chapter IV concludes the study by asserting that the trilogy must be viewed as an heroic elegy, in exactly the same way that Tolkien viewed Beowulf. Thus, the theme of the trilogy, like Beowulf, is the mutability of man.

"Naming and Vocation in the Novels of J. R. R. Tolkien, Patricia Kennealy and Anne McCaffrey" discovers in recent works of fantasy and science fiction a pattern of authority which is rooted in the existence of namers and characters who are called to specific tasks. Each of these authors portrays individuals who are called to their own particular and unique roles by other figures whose knowledge of them is deeper than their own. The Biblical account of Samuel's life provides a paradigm for both namer and named that is informative in recognising this pattern in each of the works studied. The virtues essential to living out the call of a namer are faith and obedience; and personal fulfilment as well as heroic feats can only be achieved if those virtues are cultivated.

O presente trabalho é focado nas personagens femininas da obra, e através da análise de suas descrições físicas e psicológicas, ações, características, enfim, de suas construções, objetiva determinar o modo de representação do autor, chegando-se, assim, a uma reflexão acerca da importância destas personagens na mitologia tolkieniana, à qual The Silmarillion serve como ponto inicial. Faz-se necessário, também, desvendar a influência de fatores políticos, sociais e históricos na criação e desenvolvimento destas personagens. A obra estudada relata os fatos que servem como fundo mítico à criação do mundo no qual se passa, a Terra-média. São contados os acontecimentos que deram origem a tudo, seres e ambientes, sentimentos, o Mal e sua eterna luta contra o Bem pelo poder. Pretendemos realizar este intento com o auxílio de teorias diversas, em especial a linha feminista da crítica literária que se ocupa do papel da mulher como leitora de textos de autoria masculina, como é o caso. Esperamos, também, contribuir com o crescente interesse pela obra do autor inglês, deixado à margem do cânone pela crítica especializada, para que assim se possa reconhecer a importância de sua obra em seu tempo, e também a de suas personagens femininas. / This dissertation intends to analyse the female characterization in the novel The Silmarillion, written by J. R. R. Tolkien. This novel has a fantastic tone, and it is part of a mythology created by its author; the characters have features that go from human to divine, and most of them are formed by men that act as heroes. The present study focuses on the female characters of the novel, and through the analysis of their physical and psychological descriptions, actions, features, in short, their constructions, it intends to determine the author’s way of representation; so, it will be possible to reach a reflection about the importance of these characters in the Tolkienian mythology, to which The Silmarillion figures as the initial point. It is also necessary to unmask the influence of political, social and historical factors on the creation and development of these characters. The novel gives an account on the facts that figure as a mythical background to the world where it is placed, Middle-earth. The events that were the origin to everything, beings and places, feelings, Evil and its eternal fight against Good for power, are told. We intend to achieve this goal with the support of many theories, especially the feminist trend of literary criticism that deals with the role of woman as a reader of texts written by men, as it is the case. We also wish to contribute to the growing interest on the works of the English author, who was left at the edge of the canon by the specialized critics, so that it is possible to recognize the importance of his work at his time, and also the importance of his female characters.

Tolkien declared that the central issue of his major work, The Lord of the Rings, is the tension emerging between the unavoidable death and the search for immortality. Therefore, this study is a research about how that aspect affects the structure of the novel and how it discusses the role of art and technique as a piece of value and a resource of memory available for finite or immortals beings, whose existence is linked to a continuously changing world. On the one hand, there are in novel beings such as elves that are directly connected to the nature of Arda and are doomed to remain there until its end. These apparently immortal beings can’t bear such constant changes on the planet and employ technical means in order to have an affect on the world and keep it as it is. On the other hand, mortal men, faced with their own mortality, seek out art as a way to have their deeds registered and so kept alive forever in works such as sculptures, tapestry or literary texts.

J.R.R. Tolkien uses specific linguistic narrative techniques in Smith of Wootton Major to make the world of Wootton Major and the nearby land of Faery come to life for his readers. In this thesis, I examine how Tolkien accomplishes this feat by presenting a linguistic analysis of some parts of the story. My analysis is also informed by Tolkien's own ideas of fairy-stories, and as such, it uniquely shows the symbiotic relationship between Tolkien's theories and his narrative art.
