Articulation in brass playing : the tongue - friend or foe?

Ayers, Angela Gillian January 2004 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 97-99. / This dissertation attempts to demonstrate the role the tongue plays in articulation in brass playing. It briefly examines oral anatomy, physiology and theories on motor learning, and describes the tongue's position in producing English speech sounds. It shows how these positions are used to teach different articulation techniques on the various brass instruments. Articulation styles and (tonguing) exercises, which could aid in the improvement of tongue articulation, are highlighted. It is hoped that these highlights will add insight for both present and future brass teachers.

Complications of 20th Century French Basson Music on Modern German Bassoon System

Hayes, Ciarán January 2023 (has links)
The 20th century French repertoire remains some of the most fruitful and varied music written for our instrument. But in fact it was written for another instrument entirely. While these two instruments share the exact same role when it comes to orchestral playing and every other practical sense - under the hood the instruments could not be further apart in terms of mechanics. So how is it that the bassoonist should go about tackling the intricacies of the French Repertoire - which as a whole offer very challenging pieces - when another layer of intricacies is added on top in the fact that it was all written for an entirely different instrument. Through careful and methodical changes to technique and exercises it is possible to alleviate many of the major problems so that they become more manageable. The hope of this paper is that others shall continue their own research into understanding and overcoming some of the shortcomings and complications related to our instrument in hopes that we may continue to build on our established technical and musical foundations.   Keywords: basson, bassoon, alternative fingerings, complications of performance, double tonguing, reed style

Pedagogical Use of Plainchant for Trombone: Its Application in Legato Studies and Ensemble Playing

Hinman, Daniel 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to explore the benefits of chant music and its pedagogical applications for the individual trombonist or ensemble member. Several common method books are examined and categorized as either musical exercise or lyrical etude. Through this analysis I highlight a gap between the two method types that can be bridged through practice of chant. I support this claim through an analysis of chant characteristics that make it an ideal candidate to encourage pure sound production and connection in a performable work. Practice of chant in trombone chamber or choir ensembles will also encourage the development of skills necessary to play as a member of a group. I propose regular practice of this music will aid the ensemble in blend and balance, intonation, articulation, and slide coordination. The final chapter of the research provides the reader with a brief summary of the works refenced to promote further study as one chooses.
