Dynamique et instabilités de combustion des flammes swirlées / Dynamics and Combustion Instabilities of Swirling Flames

Palies, Paul 11 October 2010 (has links)
This work is concerned with the dynamics of premixed confined turbulent swirling flames submitted to acoustic velocity disturbances. The general objective is to gain an understanding of the mechanisms governing the response of these flames and to derive predictive methods for combustion instabilities. Swirling flows are first reviewed in terms of swirl numbers and novel expressions for them are given. Perturbed form of the swirl number are suggested taking into account acoustic disturbances in the flow. The experimental system comprises an upstream manifold, an injector equipped with a swirler and a transparent flame tube allowing direct visualization of the flame motion. Two operating points are investigated corresponding to different bulk velocities. The upstream manifold and the flame tube of the burner can be easily change to test several configurations. The burner acoustic is also analyzed in term of coupled cavities approach to determined the resonant frequencies of the system in non reactive cases. Experiments are carried out to measure the system eigen frequencies and the estimate damping coefficient of the various burners arrangements. A criterion for decoupling acoustic mode is suggested. The flow dynamics is examined in terms of mode conversion occurring at the swirler or downstream an airfoil cascade. This part of the work, carried out with numerical simulations, shows that when submitted to an acoustic wave, a swirler gives rise to an azimuthal convective wave in addition to the transmitted acoustic wave. Both axial and radial swirlers are prone to this mechanism as confirmed by experiments. It is found that this mode conversion process has a strong impact on the flame dynamics in swirling flames combustors. Combustion dynamics is then analyzed by measuring the flame describing function (FDF) of this burner. This FDF is used to determine the response of the flame to acoustic velocity disturbances propagating on the upstream flow. It is shown that the Strouhal number is a suitable dimensionless group to characterize the swirling flame response. The flame dynamics is also analyzed with an ensemble of diagnostics including pressure probes, photomultipliers and laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV). A model for the linear swirling flame transfer function is derived theoretically. The physical mechanisms driving the response of the flame are identified : vortex rollup and swirl number fluctuations. The vortex rollup is associated to the acoustic wave transmitted downstream of the swirler and entering in the combustor while the swirl number fluctuations are directly linked to the mode conversion mechanisms downstream the swirler which induced different axial and azimuthal speeds upstream the flame. The rollup phenomena acts at the extremity of the flame while swirl number fluctuations act on the flame angle. These competiting mechanisms act constructively or destructively leading to low or high gains in the flame response depending on the frequency. These mechanisms are retrieved by large eddy simulations of the flame dynamics. Finally, an instability analysis is carried out by combining the experimental flame describing function (FDF) and an acoustic model of the combustor to determine the frequency and the amplitude of the velocity disturbances at the limit cycle. A good agreement between predictions and experiments is obtained in most cases indicating that the method is suitable subject to further developments.

Equacionamento das componentes do erro volumétrico em máquinas de medir a três coordenadas / Equationing of components of volumetric error in coordinate measuring machines

Rosenda Valdés Arencibia 26 April 1999 (has links)
The accuracy and the repeatability of measurements of Three Coordinates Measuring Machines (CMM) are affected by several errors. Among them, geometrical errors are the most influents in the most experimental cases. The result of geometric errors combination in each of the preferentials directions is denominated of volumetric error components. Thus, its possible to know the existent relationship between coordinates of measured points and volumetric error components. Several methods have been proposed to model the behavior of the volumetric error in CMM as a function of the X, Y and Z coordinates. However, sofar from experimental measurements of the volumetric error has bem proposed mathematical model for the descriptions and characterizations of errors was obtained. In this work is presented a general methodology to obtain a mathematical equation and prediction of them components of the volumetric errors, using multiple regression. The methodology was applied at a of \"Moving Bridge\" CMM type. Were obtained three regression equations, one for each component of the error, starting from data collected by direct calibration, specifically by the divided volume method. The model was evaluated statistically. The simulated results were evaluated, discussed and compared with the results obtained through the ball bar calibration, showing an excellent capacity of the model in the prediction of the volumetric error of the machine. Besides was made the compensation of the volumetric error in two diagonals of the working volume of the appraised machine using the proposed model, in this case the error was minimized sensibly.

Function statistics applied to volume rendering : transfer functions design and computational issues on discrete functions / Estatísticas em funções aplicadas a visualização volumétrica : detalhes computacionais em funções discretas

Bernardon, Fabio Fedrizzi January 2008 (has links)
Transfer function design is an important problem that receives much attention from the visualization community. Several researches have inspired the creation of better tools and techniques to deal with volumetric datasets. There are two major classes of datasets, namely structured and unstructured grids. Most of the previous work has only addressed structured data. This work presents two groups of contributions of different nature. The first contribution is related to the general problem of transfer function design. It introduces the concept of ensembles, which are complex transfer functions created from standard types. It also presents a key-frame based approach to handle time-varying sequences. The second group of contributions is related with a study on several characteristics of unstructured data. Problems have been discovered and addressed to allow a seamless integration of classical structured grids tools to unstructured data. This work includes results that show improvements on a statistical analysis of the data, as well as the developed transfer function design system. Further work is suggested to take advantage of the enhanced version of the gradient-magnitude histogram, and explore different boundary model.

Metodologia baseada nas funções de transferência para pré-processamento de imagens mamográficas digitais e sua aplicação em esquema computacional de auxílio ao diagnóstico / Transfer function based methodology to preprocessing digital mammographic image and its application on computer-aided diagnosis schemes

Marcelo Andrade da Costa Vieira 31 March 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to evaluate the quality of radiological equipment and their images in order to use these evaluations to improve the performance of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) scheme. The mean idea is about the development of image processing techniques to enhance digital mammograms according to the characteristics of the X-ray unit used for image acquisition. This work is basically divided in two parts. In the first one, it were determined the characteristics related to spatial and contrast resolution of several mammographic equipment, evaluated respectively from the optical transfer function and noise Wiener spectrum. This evaluation allowed, in a second part, the development of a preprocessing technique to enhance different set of digital mammographic images, gathered according to the equipment used on its acquisition process. Thus, each mammographic image had its quality improved in conformity with the characteristics of the equipment used on its acquisition, determined in the first part of this work. These images, after the enhancement process, were used on a previously developed CAD scheme. It was observed an improvement of 12% on the CAD performance using pre-processed mammograms compared to the results obtained when using non-enhanced mammographic images.

Natural concepts in the domestic dog.

Feuerbacher, Erica Nan 12 1900 (has links)
The current study investigated concept formation in domestic dogs, specifically that of a toy concept. The dog's differential responding (retrieval vs. non-retrieval) to two sets of stimuli suggested a toy concept. Differential responding occurred from the very first trial, indicating that the concept had been formed in the natural environment, not during the experiment. It was hypothesized that a common response may be responsible for the emergence of the class in the natural environment. The results demonstrated that it was possible to expand the class by adding previously non-retrieved objects to the toy class through a common response. It was also shown that the toy concept passed the more stringent criterion (transfer of function test) required validating it as a concept.

Kolář, Jan January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with the powerline communication focusing on the simulations of channel transfer functions. The introduction summarizes basic information about PLC followed by the analysis of the available PLC Software simulator (implemented in NS-3) and the analysis of implemented noises and interferences and its extensions. One chapter is devoted to possibilities of link capacity calculation. Within the thesis, various methods of calculation of primary parameters of transmission line were implemented and the simulator was compared with other freely available simulators. Subsequently, simulations were carried out focused on channel transfer functions in different topologies, on the impedance changes of branch, on the lengths of branch, and changes in the direct path between communicating nodes.
