The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes the students in the 6th grade in a school in Sweden had against sustainable development and if transformational learning could help to change their attitudes and action competence for sustainable development. This was done through surveys and observations of lessons and exercises and focus group discussions. The observations were supplemented with audio recordings and notes. The pupils' attitudes were mostly normative action-oriented, meaning that pupils "acted" for sustainable development in accordance with current norm such as recycling, reuse, energy saving. The pupils were categorized according to the subject position they occupied in the discussions and the identified subjects´ vas overpowering, responsible and powerless. Most pupils had a powerless subject position and felt that they had a limited ability to influence their environment or the global environment, or that someone else was responsible to change. Teaching series and valuations exercises contributed to a changed approach by the pupils´ subject position changes. It change from a predominantly with a powerless subject position, to a more responsible subject position. A contributing factor was that the pupils acquired knowledge of the substance, were able to identify their opportunities and had the will to act.
