Patient Experiences after Undergoing Bariatric Surgery

Andersson, Emma January 2015 (has links)
Background: Overweight and obesity has increased worldwide and is a leading cause of preventable death. This has led to the quantity of bariatric surgical procedures in Sweden increasing.  Research has identified significant medical benefits such as long-term weight loss, improved risk factors and significant reduction of mortality resulting from the surgery, however research focusing on the experiences of patients has not been undertaken to the same degree. The increasing incidence of overweight and obesity suggest that this patient group will continue to increase each year. Knowledge about the experience of bariatric surgery, including the challenges it represents from the patients’ perspective, is essential for nurses in order to provide the best possible care.                                                           Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the patient’s experiences after undergoing bariatric surgery beyond the initial post-operative period of 6 months.                       Method: This study has been conducted as a literature review of nine qualitative scientific nursing articles. The data was analysed by conducting a manifest content analysis.        Result: The results found that experiences after bariatric surgery beyond the initial post-operative period were both positive and negative. How the individuals adapted to the changes the surgery entailed was found to be a strong factor in determining the nature of the experience. Two main categories emerged from the data; ‘Enforced Structure’ and ‘A Complete Transformation’.                                                                                   Conclusion: Undergoing bariatric surgery results in extensive and complex changes for this patient group to adapt to. Exploring their experiences has allowed factors for successful and challenging adaption to these changes to be identified. Nursing professionals can use this knowledge to help guide bariatric patients towards a successful adaption to the multitude of changes that surgery encompasses.

Surveying the communication needs of adolescents and young adults with autism : implications for transition planning

Wolf, Brittney 09 December 2013 (has links)
Research has shown that the majority of young adults with autism achieve poor-fair outcomes. It is known that communication deficits in individuals with autism may persist throughout the lifespan. However, there is a paucity of information in the literature pertaining to the communication needs of adolescents and young adults with autism. To meet the complex needs of these individuals, transition plans and programs must be improved. One way in which transition programs can be improved is by incorporating evidence based assessment and intervention methods designed for this population that target communication skills. Caregivers (n=68) of adolescents and young adults with autism anonymously completed a survey pertaining to outcomes, goals, and communication skills. Outcomes for the young adults were mostly poor and communication skill performance was variable. Results revealed that overall, caregivers perceived some communication skills to be more important than others. Caregivers rated the importance of communication skills differently depending on the social goals of the individual with autism. Results achieved significance for the relationship between developmental language level and the perceived importance of certain communication skills. Findings demonstrate that specific communication skills should be assessed and targeted during transitional planning for individuals with autism. / text

Moving up, feeling down : socioemotional distress during the transition to college

Skalamera, Julie Michele 24 March 2014 (has links)
The transition from high school into college is a critical period in the life course, reflecting past history and forecasting future prospects. How this transition unfolds can influence who persists in college and who does not, as it is a time of socioemotional vulnerability as well as a foundation of the highly cumulative path through higher education. The aim of this study was to look at variation in emotional adjustment during the transition from high school into college and how relates to the match/mismatch of academic context and pathways from high school to college as well as parental support. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), latent growth curve and growth mixture modeling were used to estimate trajectories of emotional distress and identify basic categories of trajectories among college goers. Aspects of high school and college context and performance variables—as well as combination among them—were then used to predict the types of trajectories individual college students followed. The results revealed significant heterogeneity in how college-goers fared emotionally, with some experiencing increased depressive symptomatology and others experiences declines. Those who appeared to fare the worst emotionally during the transition to college had consistently low academic demands from high school into college and lacked support social support from their parents. / text

Electronic spectroscopy of transition metal dimer

Qian, Yue, 钱玥 January 2013 (has links)
This thesis reports laser spectroscopic studies of gas-phase transition metal dimers using laser ablation/reaction with free jet expansion and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy technique. Themolecules studied in this work are palladium dimer (Pd2) and vanadium dimer (V2). Many compounds formed from these transition metals are important and functional catalysts in chemical reactions. Therefore, it is of great significance to start from the fundamental level to understand the properties and characteristics of the metal bonding and also the behavior of these metals when reacting with other chemicals. The electronic transitions of Pd2and V2in the visible region were studied. Gas-phase Pd2and V2moleculeswereproduced by laser ablation of palladium and vanadium metal rod, respectively. For the Pd2molecule, eleven vibrational bands were recorded and analyzed, and have been assigned to the 〖[17.1]〗^3 □_g□ X^3 □_u^+ transition system. The bond length and vibrational frequency of the ground X^3 □_u^+ state were determined to be 2.47 Å and 211.38 cm-1, respectively. This is the first experimental investigation of the electronic transitions of Pd2.For the V2molecule,six vibrational bands were observed and assigned to a new 〖[19.6] 〗^3 □_u^□□ X^3 □_g^□ transition system. Molecular constants for the 〖[19.6] 〗^3 □_u^□ excited state were obtained from high-resolution LIF spectra. The electronic structure of the Pd2andV2molecules was discussed in detail using molecular orbital energy level diagrams, which is important for understanding the nature of chemical bonding in these dimers. Comparison of the transition metal dimers studied in this work with other dimers is also presented. / published_or_final_version / Chemistry / Master / Master of Philosophy
