The relationship between Man and pets dates from thousands of years and has been studied by different areas of knowledge such as Antropology, Paleontology, Sociology and Psychology. The study of the roles played by pet in their relationship with Man, as well as Man's desires projected into these pets may cast light on important psychological knowledge about Man himself. This research deals with the study of the relationship between children and pets, trying to understand the possible influence of such a relationship upon the psychological growth of kindergarten children, ranging from 3 to 6 years old. The research at issue will be carried out helding interviews with children and their parents. Its theoretical basis will include Psychoanalysis, mainly Winnicott's Theory of the Transitional Objects. The preliminary data collected in clinical conditions along with those collected in the interviews held with the parents and the child himself allow us to conclude that a pet enhances the psychological growth of children, since it performs some roles of a transitional object, allowing children to cope with their frustrations and anxieties resulted from the threat of separation from the maternal figure, as well as other conflicts resulted from their relationship with parental figures.

Its main objective is to analyze how the period of adaptation of infants and very small children and the usage of transitional objects during the phase of insertion of the child in the Children’s Education Center (CEI). We have listed specific objectives: to verify how the adaptation period in the CEI occurs; to observe if the nursery teachers allow the use of transitional objects; to identify the objects that infants and toddlers use; to verify possible behavior changes and reactions of those who use these objects. The universe of this research is the Children’s Education Center, located in the eastern part of the city of São Paulo. The methodology used is qualitative of the intervention type based on action research, and the instruments of data collection are: observation and recording, semi-structure interview and conversation round with four teachers working in two nursery classes. The research is based on authors of Psychoanalysis and Critical Pedagogy. The results show that the teachers made it possible for the children to use the transitional objects during the adaptation period; however, at meal times, two teachers made interventions regarding the use of pacifiers and pans because the children did not accept the meals offered and they were still crying. Sometimes, faced with the constant crying of the children, the teachers negotiated with them, collecting the transitional object, informing the child that it would be returned only when the crying ceased. Babies and very small children who used transitional objects fell asleep before other children, calmed down faster and more easily adapted to the CEI routine, demonstrating safety and comfort. These results lead us to think how much it is necessary to discuss this theme in the courses of initial and continuing teacher training, so that when entering the teaching career, teachers can understand and become more aware of the children’s needs, understanding the importance of objects especially during the period of adaptation in the CEI.

"What does that mean?" Objects of significance in residential programmes for young persons in South Africa

Molepo, Phineas Lesiba 30 June 2008 (has links)
Many young persons live under difficult circumstances. Factors including HIV/AIDS pandemic, exacerbate the need to place young persons into alternative placements. The new and the unknown can be frightening but carrying a faithful transitional object establishes therapeutic bridge between the old and known and the new and unknown. This study sought to explore South African child and youth care workers' awareness of young persons' objects of significance in residential care settings. The rational was that with greater awareness, important objects may become a more useful option for the promotion of young persons' well-being. The research confirmed that South African child and youth care workers are aware of the existence and importance of significant objects. It further revealed that young persons possess different objects of significance to which workers need to pay careful attention. / Research Institute for Theology and Religion / M.Tech.
