Yours faithfully; Werther for the English language stage

Starrs, David Bruno January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Although numerous English literary translations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s ‘nobility in suicide’ - themed, epistolary, psychological and therefore “untheatrical” (Atkins 1949) novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (1774) have been published – none of the resultant English stage translations have ever been described as faithful to the original. The various obstacles to the creation of a faithful translation for the English language stage were analysed. The first obstacle is caution by Christian playwrights regarding the proscribed theme of nobility in suicide. Related to this is the second obstacle; the fear of producing ‘imitative’ suicides, which have been labelled ‘The Werther Effect’ by sociologists (Phillips 1974). Other obstacles are form-related rather than theme-related and include the absence of an authoritative English literary translation and the difficulties in translating to the stage the psychological and epistolary novel. With reference to Goethe’s three–tiered model of translation (translated by Lefevere 1977) and cinema academic Geoffrey Wagner’s ‘Three modes of adaptation’ (Wagner 1975) this writer has attempted to write a ‘prosaic’, ‘transpositional’ and unaugmented stage translation by identifying and addressing each of the obstacles, the hypothesis being that if these obstacles were systematically addressed and overcome, then an English language stageplay closely equivalent in meaning to the prominent ideas, themes and form of the novel – that is, a work arguably faithful to the novel – could be created. The research lead to the resultant creation The Sorrows and Sufferings of Young Werther; a Stageplay which is submitted as the creative work component (30%) of the writer’s Master of Creative Arts thesis at the University of Melbourne, Australia, in September 2003.

Vivere sul serio: Eduardo De Filippo and the Art of Life

Gargiulo, Jennifer January 2006 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / This thesis offers the first English translation of Eduardo De Filippo’s last play, Gli esami non finiscono mai (1973). It analyzes the play in the context of the dramatist’s career and describes the philosophical shift that took place in Eduardo’s dialectic as he progressed from a post-war, neorealist drama like Napoli milionaria! toward the existential reflections present in his last play. Unlike previous studies, this work concentrates on Eduardo’s philosophical journey from neorealism to existential query and identifies the factors that influenced his thinking process. To this end, I have evaluated the plays most relevant to the development of his philosophy and the socio-political context in which they were written. The influence of the Neapolitan traditional dialect theater, along with that of Luigi Pirandello, his American contemporaries, Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neill, and William Shakespeare, is also examined. Important social issues that directly affected the author, such as the struggle in Italy for the legalization of divorce and the plight of children born out of wedlock, are highlighted to illustrate how they contributed to the disillusionment and pessimism present in Eduardo’s last play. From the rather hopeful ending of Napoli milionaria! Eduardo was reduced at the end of his life to sheer desperation in Gli esami non finiscono mai. Italy had changed but it had not moved on. By focusing on the playwright’s final play, this thesis offers a new perspective on a twentieth century dramatist who is much more complex than is commonly acknowledged. De Filippo is revealed as a dramatist who transcended the Neapolitan comic theatrical traditions he sprang from and created a theater of political and social engagement that endures today.

Charles Baudelaire překladatel Edgara Allana Poea / Charles Baudelaire Translator of Edgar Allan Poe

VACOVSKÁ, Marta January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the topic of Ch. Baudelaire?s translations of E. A. Poe?s work. The main aim is to show the similarities of these translations and differences between them. It was achieved by using the methods of comparative analysis of the original and the target texts. The motives which led Baudelaire to choose Poe and his work represent the significant role. Last but not least the author reflects the question of Poe?s influence on the work of Baudelaire. The results of the research were achieved with the help of specialised literature, original English texts and their French translations which constitute the basis of the comparative analysis.

Markovo evangelium v českých překladech Bible / Mark's gospel in the Czech Bible translations

Vondráček, Robert January 2018 (has links)

Besides being a chronicler, a novelist and a playwright, Clarice Lispector also worked as a translator and as part of this last job she left the unfinished datiloscrito of the play The member of the wedding (1961). The play was originally written by Carson McCullers. Without there being any publication, of this work, it is part of Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation and it presents handwritten interventions - questions, possible changings, deletions and comments, which explains her tradutological process. The aim of this paper is to analyze the translation according to Bakhtin Circle's reflections, establishing dialogues between the original text, the translation itself and what we call retranslation, in which there are handwritten interventions. The analysis of translation process of these two versions led us to accomplish two other translations from the original text - a literal translation and a literary translation - in order to have two references of analytical comparison. This investigation is performed through dialogism and ideological interrelation, aesthetic and contextual between the writers Clarice Lispector and Carson McCullers and their productions. In this sense, we have the support of linguistc assumptions, starting in Saussure, Benveniste and Bakhtin's contributions. In addition to Bakhtin's contributions and the translation studies, the chronicle Traduzir procurando não trair published in Revista Jóia, in 1968 is important in the analysis because Clarice Lispector reflects upon the practice of translation, registering personal opinions about the act of translating. As a result, we verify the translator's presence as a thinking subject, showing the style and authorship in the translation, solving linguistcis variation presents in the original text as well as resolving problems of the discursive genre. There is room of intermediation between the original text and its translation that allows changes...

Por fim, apresenta-se uma antologia em formato bilíngue dos epigramas contidos na Grinalda da Arte de Amar (1862) com notas e comentários das especificidades de suas traduções / Aiming at contributing to the research of Greek-Roman classical translations into Portuguese and the acceptance of these texts in our literature, this study tries to register, as well as study and spread the work of Martial’s translations produced by José Feliciano de Castilho, a Portuguese who lived in Rio de Janeiro from 1847 until his death in 1879. The analysis of the translations of this Portuguese-Brazilian poet gives some clues about how the nineteenth century read and spread the poetry of Bilbilis author, taking into account his influence as both epigrammatist and a person who spread his dissolute and sometimes, obscene poetic matters. Intending to present the different views of the nineteenth century and to the present time on Martial’s poetry, we propose a theoretical path on this work in order to show the different approaches of these periods of time. Then the reader will find a study of how to have a reading and translation of Martial by José Castilho, once again, contrasting them with the current receive this poet. Finally, it features an anthology of epigrams in bilingual format contained in Grinalda da Arte de Amar (1862) with notes and comments on the specifics of his translations / FAPESP: 11/04944-8

Selected Russian Classical Romances and Traditional Songs for Young Singers: Introductory Materials with Teaching Strategies

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this research is to assemble a collection of Russian Art song repertoire selected for beginner level training, with an exposition of the criteria for their appropriateness as teaching pieces. This examination defines the scope of vocal, technical, language and interpretive abilities required for the performance of Russian Art song literature. It also establishes the need for a pedagogical approach that is free from Eurocentric cultural biases against Russian language and culture. Intended as a reference for teachers and students to simplify the introduction of Russian Art song into the repertoire of the advanced secondary or beginning undergraduate student, it includes a discussion of learning priorities and challenges particular to native English speakers relative to successful Russian language lyric diction assimilation, with solutions. This study is designed to furnish material for a published edition of songs in the appropriate transpositions for high, medium and low voice including word-for- word and sense translations with IPA transcriptions, along with program notes for each piece. Repertoire is selected from the works of Alyab'yev, Gurilyov, Varlamov, Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, as well as a few folk songs. The repertoire is grouped by difficulty and accompanied by English translations, interpretive analyses of the Russian Language poetry, and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions modified for lyric diction. The degrees of difficulty are determined by vocal registration demands, word lengths and rhythmical text setting, as well as the incidences of unfamiliar phonological processes and complex consonant clusters occurring in the text. A scope and sequence chart is included, supplemented with learning objectives and teaching strategies, which organizes the repertoire according the order in which the pieces are to be taught. A palatalization guide is provided, to provide solutions for common pronunciation problems. Included in the appendices are listings of additional recommended Russian art song titles and recommended listening and viewing. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2014
