Fissures of the frontal operculum in as a South African sample

Kamanzi-wa, Sylvia 16 November 2006 (has links)
Faculty of Sciences School of Anatomical Sciences 0202721m slyviakamanzi@yahoo.com / This study primarily seeks to confirm two systems of classifying the sulci of the frontal operculum1 (F3): the radiologically derived system of Ebeling et al (1989) involving four Types of Sulcal Connections, and the anatomical classification of the anterior rami of the lateral fissure, involving three patterns. Sulcal- and intersulcal- lengths are also considered. The sample consisted of 220 cadaveric hemispheres; 65 of which were whole brains (control category); and 90 consisting of equal numbers of separate right- and lefthemispheres (case category). Specimens were orientated by examining relevant features of: the lateral fissure; the postcentral sulcus; and the central fissure. Features of the remaining boundary sulci (precentral sulcus / sulci, and inferior frontal sulcus) of F3 were also considered. The focus was on examining the: frequency of occurrence, shape, and connections of the sulci of the F3. The sulci of F3 were designated as: major sulci [anterior ascending (AAR)- and anterior horizontal (AHR)- rami, and stem of the anterior rami when present); and accessory sulci (sulci of the –pars opercularis and –pars triangularis). Sulcal lengths were measured using thread, with needles as anchors. Intersulcal lengths were recorded as straight-line distances between parallel pins inserted into the sulci of the frontoparietal operculum. Specimens fixed outside the cranial cavity were excluded from measurement. The reliability of the data was monitored, by repeating the observations. The two systems of classification were broadly confirmed. The criteria for the Types of Sulcal Connections were modified in view of the findings on double precentral sulci and the connections of the opercular sulcus (which occurred as either one or as two sulci). A sulcus of the pars triangularis (which occurred as either one, two, or as three sulci) was found to be a useful landmark. The Chi-square test was applied to the data in the two systems of classification. There were no significant interhemispheric differences with respect to the incidences of: Types 1-4 of Sulcal Connections, or Patterns of the Anterior Rami (I, Y, and VU). Sulcal lengths were similar to that reported by Ono et al (1990). The Student t-test was applied to sample sizes 18 and above. No significant interhemispheric differences, in the lengths of the sulci that were considered, were found. A significant 1 The definition of the frontal operculum as the inferior frontal gyrus only, is used for the purposes of this study. The frontal operculum may also be abbreviated as F3. v difference was found in two instances when comparing the case- and control- categories. Intersulcal distances are reported on in the frontal- and frontoparietal- operculum.

A study of Monoidal t-norm based Logic

Toloane, Ellen Mohau 07 February 2014 (has links)
The logical system MTL (for Monoidal t-norm Logic) is a formalism of the logic of left-continuous t-norms, which are operations that arise in the study of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. The objective is to investigate the important results on MTL and collect them together in a coherent form. The main results considered will be the completeness results for the logic with respect to MTL-algebras, MTL-chains (linearly ordered MTL-algebras) and standard MTL-algebras (left-continuous t-norm algebras). Completeness of MTL with respect to standard MTL-algebras means that MTL is indeed the logic of left-continuous t-norms. The logical system BL (for Basic Logic) is an axiomatic extension of MTL; we will consider the same completeness results for BL; that is we will show that BL is complete with respect to BL-algebras, BL-chains and standard BL-algebras (continuous t-norm algebras). Completeness of BL with respect to standard BL-algebras means that BL is the logic of continuous t-norms.

A Recreation and Ballistic Evaluation of Otto Schneeloch's Firearm Curiosity - The .307 Triangular

Shukitis, Amber Nicole 05 March 2014 (has links)
Otto Scheeloch's U.S. Patent No. 134,442 of 1872 describes a unique firearm that uses triangular bullets. The current research effort evaluates the ballistic performance of Otto's disclosure for the very first time. To achieve this goal it was necessary to seek out surviving artifacts and scour the historical record in search of all the parameters needed to meticulously recreate the curious triangular cartridges and the corresponding gun barrel, with its matching twisted triangular bore. Every aspect of the resulting reproduction ammunition was made to be as authentic as possible, including the use of vintage civil war era bullet lead, bullet grease of period recipe, and the correct type of black powder propellant. 3D CAD (SolidWorksTM) was employed in designing the components, while advanced rapid prototyping (FDM & DMLS) techniques and investment casting were used in the physical construction of the ammunition and barrel. The ballistics testing was performed from a shooting rest over a range of 10-feet. Data was obtained for five rounds using a chronograph, paper targets and ballistic gel. The triangular bullets proved to be surprisingly accurate, consistent, and stable in flight. Data was recorded for sectional density, ballistic coefficient, muzzle velocity and energy, group size and penetration.

Triangular Bézier Surfaces with Approximate Continuity

Liu, Yingbin January 2008 (has links)
When interpolating a data mesh using triangular Bézier patches, the requirement of C¹ or G¹ continuity imposes strict constraints on the control points of adjacent patches. However, fulfillment of these continuity constraints cannot guarantee that the resulting surfaces have good shape. This thesis presents an approach to constructing surfaces with approximate C¹/G¹ continuity, where a small amount of discontinuity is allowed between surface normals of adjacent patches. For all the schemes presented in this thesis, although the resulting surface has C¹/G¹ continuity at the data vertices, I only require approximate C¹/G¹ continuity along data triangle boundaries so as to lower the patch degree. For functional data, a cubic interpolating scheme with approximate C¹ continuity is presented. In this scheme, one cubic patch will be constructed for each data triangle and upper bounds are provided for the normal discontinuity across patch boundaries. For a triangular mesh of arbitrary topology, two interpolating parametric schemes are devised. For each data triangle, the first scheme performs a domain split and constructs three cubic micro-patches; the second scheme constructs one quintic patch for each data triangle. To reduce the normal discontinuity, neighboring patches across data triangle boundaries are adjusted to have identical normals at the middle point of the common boundary. The upper bounds for the normal discontinuity between two parametric patches are also derived for the resulting approximate G¹ surface. In most cases, the resulting surfaces with approximate continuity have the same level of visual smoothness and in some cases better shape quality.

Displaying and Scaling Color Images on Hexagonal Grids

Liu, Che-Wei 04 July 2002 (has links)
Images scaling is a very common capability on rectangular grid. Similarly, its development on hexagonal grid is very fundamental and necessary. In this paper, we developed new techniques to scale digital image with resampling and without resampling. From now on, we haven¡¦t seen any research about color displaying on hexagonal grid. It limited the application of hexagonal grid displaying device. In this paper, we developed a color displaying system on hexagonal grid by using symmetrical triangular frame.

Poisson Structures on U/K and Applications

Caine, John Arlo January 2007 (has links)
Let X be a simply connected compact Riemannian symmetric space, let U be the universal covering group of the identity component of the isometry group of X, and let g denote the complexification of the Lie algebra of U, g=u^C. Each u-compatible triangular decomposition g= n_- + h + n_+ determines a Poisson Lie group structure pi_U on U. The Evens-Lu construction produces a (U, pi_U)-homogeneous Poisson structure on X. By choosing the basepoint in X appropriately, X is presented as U/K where K is the fixed point set of an involution which stabilizes the triangular decomposition of g. With this presentation, a connection is established between the symplectic foliation of the Evens-Lu Poisson structure and the Birkhoff decomposition of U/K. This is done through reinterpretation of results of Pickrell. Each symplectic leaf admits a natural torus action. It is shown that these actions are Hamiltonian and the momentum maps are computed using triangular factorization. Finally, local formulas for the Evens-Lu Poisson structure are displayed in several examples.

SILVA, M. B. 19 May 2017 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-01T23:39:27Z (GMT). Constitucionalidade.
