Alpamysh

Paksoy, H. B. January 1989 (has links)
The present work employs the detailed study of one case to illustrate a pattern that may well exist in other cases. It must be borne in mind that the subject population comprises approximately one fifth of the Soviet Union (and steadily growing at a rapid pace) and spread across a substantial portion of the Asian continent What is described in the following pages may have taken place with respect to other non-Russian nationalities in the USSR. Therefore, although this work focuses on Central Asian-Russian relations, it constitutes a possible model for analysis and investigation of Soviet policy toward other nationalities. There is strong evidence to indicate that those policies toward history and literature which were applied to Alpamysh have already been employed with respect to various developing countries as well, not the least of which are those bordering the USSR. It is the hope of this writer that this inquiry will induce others to pursue the questions raised here. Various disciplines and area studies might benefit from this investigation, aside from the obvious Central Asian and Soviet studies. The artificial separation of "areas" and disciplines, that have not existed during the evolution of the subject matter, cannot yield complete understanding. Given the restrictions imposed by the Soviet censorship and bureaucracies who control collections of materials and published works, documentation is not exhaustive. It is anticipated that subsequent research shall unearth additional information. Therefore, the temptation to hold back and wait for such new discoveries is immense. I almost succumbed to it, except for the constant reminders from friends and colleagues - among other reasons, pointing to the number of copies of the manuscript I had circulated in the academic community for comments and criticism who have insistently hounded me to go to print. I do so with mixed feelings, for, since the completion of this manuscript, a German translation (GDR printing) of Alpamysh has been issued It was translated not from the original, but from an earlier Russian translation. Moreover, it has been discovered that at least one, or perhaps two additional printings of Alpamysh have been offered for sale in Central Asia.

Uighur's identity and sense of belonging, can soft power play a role?

Fung, Winston Wai King 12 August 2014 (has links)
This study seeks to ascertain whether Chinese soft power can shape or sway the sense of belonging and identity of Uighurs within the Chinese state. The methodology used for this study will involve surveys and interviews, employing the two primary quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings from this study suggest that Chinese soft power, in the form of education in a controlled environment, does have this ability to sway Uighur to identify with the Chinese state. However, gauging the views of the wider educated Uighur community, indicates that the effectiveness of Chinese soft power is constrained by multiple social, political and economic issues. Based on the analysis of these findings, there appears to be three potential solutions: (i) create a multi-ethnic culture, (ii) incorporate civic nationalism as a component of PRC citizenship and (iii) to reformulate soft power into the form of shared goals that would require cooperation between Uighur and Hans to accomplish.

Korpus orchonských runových textů / Corpus of Orkhon Runic Inscriptions

Kaas, Filip January 2017 (has links)
The goal of the submitted thesis is creating an electronic corpus of Old Turkic Orkhon runiform inscriptions. Author will argue the choice of texts he made; the minimum volume of textual material will be at least 30 000 characters. Author will propose a model of data structure that will connect inscriptions with their electronic counterpart (including discussion of the following problems: encoding of runes, transliteration and transcription) and also various other levels of description. Author will propose solution for basic segmentation problems (on both sentence, word and morphosyntactic level). Pilot version of corpus will be made accessible and the whole procedure will be described in the text of the thesis.

On indirectivity in Azeri : A discourse-analytical study of the functions of {-mỊš}/{-(y)ỊB-DỊ(r)} and {Ị-mỊš} in South Azeri varieties

Larsson Taghizadeh, Frida January 2023 (has links)
Johanson (2003: 274) refers to the grammatical categories of evidentiality found in Turkiclanguages as indirectivity, characterised “by reference to its reception by a conscious subject”.The East Old Turkic post-terminal verbal item in -miš and copula particle in ermiš are theoldest known markers of indirectivity in Turkic and have been morphologically preserved inthe West Oghuz languages. However, the topic of indirectivity in Azeri seems to have beentouched upon very sparingly in previous empirical studies. For instance, there seem to be nostudies that acknowledge the discursive context in examining the marking of indirectivity inAzeri. This thesis adopts a qualitative, corpus-linguistic discourse-analytical perspective toanalyse the functions of the verbal inflectional suffixes {-mỊš}/{-(y)ỊB-DỊ(r)} and the copulaparticle {Ị-mỊš}, and their possible indirective uses or connotations, as well as other strategiesfor marking of indirectivity, in various discourse types in speech corpora from the Azerispeaking regions of Urmia, Ardabil, and Zanjan in Iran. The analysis illustrates how the givenmarkers acquire different functions in different discourse contexts and may be used tosignalise indirectivity in Azeri. It also shows how certain lexical expressions may be used toencode and strengthen indirective readings. As such, the results of this study can be useful asa point of departure for further research in the area.
