The Theoretical Treatises of Josef Matthias Hauer

Harvey, Dixie Lynn 08 1900 (has links)
This study makes available in English translations the three most important theoretical writings of the Austrian composer Josef Matthias Hauer (1883—1959), whose experiments with atonal and dodecaphonic music are discussed in the treatises. The treatises are Vom Wesen des Musikalischen: Grundlagen der Zwolftonmusik, Vom Melos zur Pauke: eine Einfuhrung in die Zw51ftonmusik, and Zwftlftontechnik: die Lehre von den Tropen. In addition to the translations and commentary the dissertation includes a sketch of Hauer's career and an examination of his claim that he—not Arnold Schoenberg—was the inventor of the dodecaphonic school of composition.

[en] MALACHI 3.13-21 IN WHOLE OF THE TWELVE PROPHETS / [pt] MALAQUIAS 3.13-21 NO CONJUNTO DOS DOZE PROFETAS

16 March 2007 (has links)
[en] An issue that causes much discussion nowadays in biblical exegesis is the status of the scroll of the so-called Twelve Minor Prophets. Scholars are divided among those who understand that the Twelve should be considered as a unified literary work and those who understand that the writings that are part of that scroll should be seen as independent in relation to the others. This thesis, looking at offering a contribution to the discussion of the matter of the Twelve, has its starting point in a presentation of the status quaestionis of the research of the Twelve, and, going through a study of the text of the Book of Malachi and its organization, leads to the analysis of the last pericope of that writing, Ml 3.13-21, seeking for verifying its relations to the other texts of the whole of the Twelve, in general, and of the Book of Malachi, in particular. Special attention is given to the comparison between the text of Ml 3.13-21 and the Book of Joel, specially concerning the use that both texts make of the motif of the day of YHWH. This work comes to the conclusion that the pericope studied reveals stronger contacts with the rest of the Book of Malachi than with other texts of the whole of the Twelve, something that speaks in favour of the consideration of the last component of the Twelve as an independent writing.

Heracles and the lion : Analysis of a black-figure lekythos from the Gustavianum collection / Herakles och lejonet : Analys av en svartfigurig lekyt från Gustavianums samlingar

Lundholm, Lovisa January 2022 (has links)
This study analyzes the appearance of the myth of Heracles and the Nemean lion on a lekythos from the Uppsala University Museum Gustavianum collection in Uppsala. The lekythos is a small oil vessel generally associated with fifth century B.C. burials. Heracles and the Nemean lion’s commonly found depiction in this context is not obvious on a superficial level, requiring further analysis to answer the question how the motif can be related to the object’s specific context. To investigate the complex relationship between myth and object the study uses the theoretical approach of a myth’s depiction on object’s being highly relevant to how the myth is viewed and consumed, being determined by its context and observer. The thesis approaches the individual artifact through an iconographic analysis and analyzes additional black-figure lekythoi produced between 550–475 B.C. to establish a chronological context of progression in the motif. The study uses ancient literary sources to further establish a societal context. Through the analysis the examination can determine a probable date of the lekythos and a context surrounding its production. Furthermore, the study concludes that the relevance of Heracles is partly based on his relevance in society overall and his role as a figure representing the male ideal and immortality.

The Music of Anton Webern

McKenzie, Wallace Chessley 05 1900 (has links)
In this study, the Anton Webern's music is considered in two groups: that which was written before Webern adopted the twelve-tone technique, Opp 1-16, and that written in the twelve-tone technique, Opp. 17-31. This division is not intended to represent an attempt at periodization of Webern's music, for the changes of style in Op. 17 are not that significant. But the fact that Webern employed the twelve-tone technique in all the works he wrote after Op. 16 makes this a natural point of division for a study of this sort. Besides the music of Webern, two peripheral areas are included in this study. No attempt has been made at an exhaustive biography of Webern, but facts relative to his life, and impressions about the person are presented. Also, to create a proper perspective for the study of Webern's which existed during the time that Webern lived and composed, is presented.

Dan P.McAdams’s (1993) The stories we live by: personal myths and making of the self, providedthe theoretical tools. Steinar Kvale´s (1997) The qualitative research interview provided themethod. The conclusion was that membership in Alcoholics Anonymous allowed theinformants a sense of healing, conversion and reconciliation from their earlier alcohol abuse.Through this confident community the informants were provided with the narrative meansto improve their life story and truth by a renewed identity and spiritual awakening. Keywords:
