Com o título Perspectivas Analíticas e Interpretativas na Obra para Piano de Arnold Schönberg e constituída de volume único, traz cinco capítulos dedicados à obra de Schönberg, com destaque especial para o conjunto de peças escritas para piano solo. Em Arnold Schönberg: legado de contribuições para uma nova estética musical (Cap. 1), a obra de Schönberg, como um todo, é brevemente apresentada. Ainda nesse capítulo, um item destinado especificamente ao piano traz informações sobre o pequeno, porém fundamental conjunto de peças que configuram sua obra completa para piano. Nos capítulos centrais (Cap. 2, 3 e 4), aspectos ligados aos elementos que estruturam a linguagem do compositor foram explorados de diversas maneiras: em O motivo como elemento gerador e unificador do discurso musical da Peça para Piano, Op. 11, no 1 (Cap. 2), o tratamento motívico é investigado, trazendo à tona aspectos inovadores da linguagem atonal-livre em comunhão com procedimentos encontrados na tradição tonal;em O Método Dodecafônico, sua descoberta e a aplicação na primeira obra inteiramente dodecafônica: a Suíte para Piano, Op. 25 (Cap. 3), o Método de Composição com Doze Sons é investigado pelo estudo de suas origens, de aspectos técnicos específicos até a localização do conjunto serial no Präludium da Suíte, Op. 25. Forma e tradição na estruturação do discurso musical das Cinco Peças, Op. 23 e da Suíte, Op. 25 (Cap. 4) abre com uma breve análise das Cinco Peças, Op. 23, abordando o princípio estrutural em que cada uma está sedimentada, além de apresentar um esquema sintético de sua estrutura formal. Na Suíte, Op. 25, procede-se a uma comparação com a forma suíte do período barroco. Investigam-se os movimentos de dança e descortinam-se suas ligações profundas com essa forma tradicional. Em Aspectos relevantes na interpretação e execução da obra para piano de Arnold Schönberg (Cap. 5) suscita-se o paradoxo referente à imensa quantidade de estudos e investigações a respeito de sua obra em oposição à pequena freqüência da sua execução. Com base tanto nos escritos do compositor, quanto nas análises feitas nos capítulos anteriores, revelam-se elementos que podem auxiliar o intérprete-pianista da obra de Schönberg. Dois anexos com partitura integral complementam o trabalho: o primeiro com o Drei Klavierstücke, Op. 11, no 1, e o segundo com o Klavierstücke, Op. 11, no 2, este último a Konzertmässige Interpretation von Ferrucio Busoni. Mediante as Considerações Finais, apresento questionamentos decorrentes de toda a investigação realizada. Segue-se a Bibliografia, que fundamenta essa pesquisa / Abstract: This thesis, presented to the Fine Arts Post Graduate Program of the University of Campinas / UNICAMP, intended to fulfill part of the requirements for obtaining the Master in Fine Arts, in the field of Music. With the title Analytic and Interpretive Perspectives in Arnold Schönberg Piano Oeuvre and composed of a single volume, brings five chapters dedicated to Schönberg's work, with particular attention to the pieces written for piano solo. In Arnold Schönberg: legacy of contributions to a new musical aesthetics (chapter 1), Schönberg's body of work,as a whole, is briefly presented. Still in this chapter, an item specifically destined to piano brings information about the small, but fundamental group of pieces that configure his complete work for piano. In the central chapters (chapter 2, 3 and 4), aspects related to the composer's language structure were approached in different manners: In The motif as a generator and unifying element to the musical speech of the Piano Piece, Opus 11 nº 1 (Chapter 2), the motivic treatment is investigated, bringing to surface the innovating aspects of the atonal-free language in communion with procedures found in tonal tradition; in The dodecaphonic Method, its discovery and application in the first completely dodecaphonic piece: the Piano Suite, Opus 25 (Chapter 3), the Twelve-Tone Technique is investigated through the study of its origins, from specific technical aspects to the localization of the serial assemblage in the Präludium of the Suite, Opus 25. Shape and tradition in the structuring of the musical speech of the Five Pieces, Opus 23 and The Suite Opus 25 (Chapter 4) begining with a brief analisis of the Five Pieces, Opus 23, approaching the structural principle in which each one is built, in addition to present a sinthetic scheme of its formal structure. In the Suite, Opus 25, incurring in a comparison to the suite's form in the Baroque Period. The dance movements are investigated and its deep connections to this traditional form unfold. In Relevant aspects in interpretation and execution of the piano piece of Arnold Schönberg (Chapter 5) allures the paradox concerning the immense quantity of studies ans investigations regarding his work and the small frequency of its execution. Supported by the composer's writings, as well as analysis done in the previous chapters, elements that may help the pianist-interpreter of Schönberg's work are revealed. Two annex with full scores complement the thesis: the first one with Drei Klavierstücke, Opus 11, no 1, and the second with Klavierstücke, Opus 11, no. 2, the later with Konzertmässige Interpretation von Ferrucio Busoni. An analysis of factors influencing Grade 12 results

Of the nine South African provinces, Limpopo Province has produced the worst Grade 12 results in the ten years between 1996 and 2006. Yet Thohoyandou and Mutale districts in that province performed outstandingly well from 1994 to 2006. This study aimed to find out what influential factors made the difference within these two districts between high-performing and poorly performing schools, by comparing those that performed well with those that performed badly. Data were gathered by means of questionnaires completed by a total of 87 teachers, and structured interviews were conducted with principals. The sample of 24 schools was divided into two types, ‘high performing’ and ‘poorly performing’. By means of the questionnaires, a total of 114 variables were explored, encompassing a number of different factors, from which a total of 18 hypotheses were derived: three concerning teacher factors (qualifications, home language), 10 concerning school factors (locality, number of classrooms, assembly hall, library etc. and teacher-generated problems), one concerning parental involvement, two concerning teacher motivation and management (frequency and scheduling of staff meetings), and two concerning learner motivation and management (including performance with notes and summaries). The data from both groups of schools were compared in order to test the 18 hypotheses on the influence of different variables upon Grade 12 results, the null hypothesis being, of course, that there was no influence. Before this was done, pairs of variables were also compared and subjected to chi-square testing for each of the two groups of schools to see which of the factors might be related to one another in some way, thus impacting on interpretation of the results of the hypothesis testing. For each of the two groups of schools, results from the questionnaires were analyzed by means of: <ul> <li>Frequency analyses and descriptive statistics extracted from the tables of results where they were of possible interest. Variables such as the gender of teachers were, for example, included.</li> <li>Contingency tables with chi-square analysis testing the independence of the variables where possible relationships between the variables could emerge.</li> <li>Contingency tables with chi-square analysis where the connection was not significant and independence of the variables from each other could therefore be assumed.</li></ul> The chi-square analysis tested the difference between the variables at a 0.5% level of significance. Results of the various analyses were not particularly conclusive. Those with the most reliable levels of significance suggested that the most important variables were those relating to interpersonal relationships, specifically those involving different types of contact. Where staff meetings were scheduled and not particularly frequent, Grade 12 results were better. These results were also better where there was frequent contact between parents and teachers. The results of this study and in this sample area suggest that a school’s management style is more important to Grade 12 performance than the provision of funding and facilities. The Twentieth-century Canon: An Analysis of Luigi Dallapiccola's Canonic Works from his 'Quaderno musicale di Annalibera'

The compositional technique of cross partitioning is one of Luigi Dallapiccola's most used twelve-tone devices. Through a detailed analysis of three contrapuntal canonic movements from Dallapiccola's Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera, I examine his use of cross partitioning as a motivic tool and as a referential collection. The development of the BACH motive and the derivation of tone-row statements reflects on Dallapiccola's extensive use of cross partitioning and his compositional principles used to achieve a sense of polarity. Upon a preliminary analysis based on set-theory analysis set out by Joseph Straus I draw an interpretive analysis through Alegant's cross partitioning model as well as develop my own set of parameters for interpretation in regards to polarity which is based on intervallic stability.

Twelve-Tone Identity: Adorno Reading Schoenberg through Kant

Theodor Adorno’s view of Arnold Schoenberg can be seen in light of his criticism of Immanuel Kant. Critiquing Kant’s concept of Enlightenment and his dualist philosophy, Adorno also critiques common misconceptions about Kant's work in bourgeois society. Similarly, in Schoenberg's oeuvre Adorno finds radical musical creation but also a reversion to formulaic composition in its reception by Richard Hill among others. In both Kant and Schoenberg, Adorno identifies a tripartite movement: (1) A radical work (philosophical or musical) is created by a member of bourgeois society. (2) The work adopts the function of a societal critique. (3) However, bourgeois society is incapable of understanding the work as critique and erases its radical nature. Seen in light of Adorno's thought, the thesis explores the transactional nature of idea production and reception in society.

This study focuses on challenges and prospects of the teaching of the Doppler Effect to grade 12 learners. The challenges of teaching the Doppler Effect were established and these findings influenced the development of activities. These activities were tested, refined and re-tested in an iterative cycle and finally provided prospects on teaching the Doppler Effect. Educational Design Research (EDR) was used to bridge theory and practice in education. This study was done in the Vhembe district in the Limpopo province. In the first cycle, questionnaires and interviews with 32 teachers and a subject advisor were used to establish the baseline with regards to the challenges of teaching the Doppler Effect. After the analysis of the data which forms the first cycle of EDR, the content and methodological problems faced by teachers when teaching the Doppler Effect were revealed. In the second cycle of the EDR, learning activities were developed that was informed by the analysis and tried out in 2 schools by learners and their teachers. Completed activity sheets were marked and the results were used to determine if there were a correlation between the activity sheets and the written test. Problems were documented and changes to the activities were again made and tried out in 10 schools by 216 learners with the help of 10 teachers. The data collected from the learners` work sheets were analysed. Pearson`s product moment correlation has shown that there is a statistically significant relationship (r = 0.65; p < 0.01) that exists between these design-research activities and solving of problems on the Doppler Effect. An instructional manual was developed comprising of the final activities. This was distributed amongst the district officials and teachers to assist them in the teaching of the Doppler Effect in the Vhembe district. / Physics / M.Sc. Arbetets fokus är på atonalitet och tonalitet och hur dessa tonspråk påverkar fyra individer med en musikutbildning känslomässigt. Frågeställningens bakgrund består av tre grundparametrar som belyser känslor, tonal och atonal musik samt hur olika tonspråk tolkas till visuell media. En audiovisuell artefakt har skapats bestående av två olika kompositioner; en atonal och en tonal komposition som sedan har synkroniserats med en egen producerad kortfilm. Undersökningen har sedan genomförts med ett test där fyra respondenter fick lyssna och titta på den audivisuella artefakten. Detta test följdes sedan upp med en semi-strukturerad intervju som behandlade de fyra respondenternas upplevda känslor och deras förhållande till känslospektrumet; ångest, spänning och oförmågan av att slappna av. Utifrån resultatet av undersökningen påvisades en skillnad i upplevda känslospektrum mellan den respondent som besatt en erfarenhet och en vana av atonal musik och de övriga respondenterna. Det intressanta i denna upptäckt handlar om möjligheten att det inte är utbildning i sig som är avgörande för hur olika individer tolkar olika tonspråk, utan att en väg för att uppskatta atonal musik är en kombination av erfarenhet, vana och utbildning, för att kunna skapa en förmåga att se bortom generella stereotyper för musik. The purpose of this essay is to investigate what practical function religion or spirituality has for six members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Furthermore, the aim is to investigate and analyze the members' religious turning point and compare their views on religion and spirituality before and after sobriety. The methods used are qualitative semi-structured interviews where the collected material in the form of audio recordings will be transcribed to then carry out a narrative analysis on the transcribed material. The results show that religion or spirituality fulfills a practical function for all respondents and that their view of religion and spirituality has changed to a more positive approach. The respondents' turning point came in connection with the early steps in the twelve-step program where everyone created an individual religious or spiritual view.
