Life beyond the Cemetery: The mathematical identity and academic achievement of traditionally underrepresented male AVID participants in an urban pilot program

This study was designed to investigate the mathematical identity and achievement of one cohort of underrepresented male youth who participated in a pilot school intervention program in an urban middle school. Using counternarratives and a case study method, the experiences of four traditionally underserved high school students were investigated to explore their emerging mathematical identities. Results revealed the intervention program had very limited effect on the participants' mathematical identity. As engagement is prerequisite to student achievement, this study sought to understand what environmental factors (family, peers, teachers, self) affect student engagement and their developing mathematical identities. To explore the environmental factors, the Research Assessment Package for Schools (Institute for Research Reform in Education, 1998) was used to establish levels of engagement among family, peers, teachers, and self. Results indicated among the four environmental factors, family was most influential in their mathematical identity. Peers ranked second in terms of influence, self-engagement ranked third and teacher engagement ranked in the fourth position. To understand the impacts of race and culture on mathematical identity, the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity was administered to explore levels of race (cultural) centrality, and regard (public and private) as well as explore their identities as being members of their respective groups. A cross case analysis was conducted on the four participants to determine the impacts of race (cultural) centrality and regard (public and private) on their mathematical identity. Results revealed each member had a high race (cultural) centrality score and a high private regard score and a moderate public iii regard score. Participants were aware of stereotype and stereotype threat; however, it did not appear to affect mathematical identity. This model integrates racial and/or cultural identity and the engagement of family, peers, teachers and self to better understand the conditions that contribute to the mathematical identity of traditionally underserved young men. / Math & Science Education

Investigating Academic and Psychosocial Outcomes of First-Generation African American Postsecondary Students who completed Early College Access Programming:  A Qualitative Case Study

This qualitative bounded case study examines both the benefits and challenges faced by first-generation African American students who have completed early college access programming (ECAP). Not all children have equal access to higher education, therefore educators have been trying to bridge the gap in education for years. Due to socio-economic challenges in society, there has been a colossal increase in the need for diversity and inclusion within postsecondary institutions. Students from various ethnicities and backgrounds bring different experiences to education and the education learned through those various experiences are valuable. Inequalities in college access experienced by first-generation African American students is the lens for this study. This study addresses the effectiveness of early college access and its effects on first-generation African American students' postsecondary academic and psychosocial outcomes. Driven by critical race theory, this study analyzed student perceptions of their participation in ECAP and whether it supported their academic achievement in college. The study consisted of 10 interviews with Achievable Dream alumni enrolled in six universities across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Results were analyzed using inductive coding to identify components that affect academic achievement. Findings suggest that participation in early college access programming established an educational foundation which led to positive outcomes in academic achievement throughout postsecondary education. Identification Methods That Achieve Parity for Students Underrepresented in Gifted and Talented Programs in Virginia

The purpose of this study is to investigate the identification methods that achieve parity for students underrepresented in Gifted and Talented (GT) Programs in Virginia. There are underrepresented gifted and talented students (GT) throughout the United States of America, including the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students of every ethnicity and socioeconomic status can need GT services. There is a need to increase equity in GT programs to show a representation of students that mimics the total representation in the school division. Data were collected from all 132 school divisions in Virginia and the school divisions that were not underrepresented for Black, Hispanic, and two or more-race students (Non-Hispanic) (NH) were studied further. There were 12 out of the 132 school divisions that were not underrepresented for Blacks, 16 out of 132 for Hispanics and 42 out of 132 for two or more-race students (NH). In those 70 school divisions, GT plan reports were researched for identification methods used to be accepted into the GT program. Identification methods included: which of the four area of giftedness they were admitted into, which of the seven multiple criteria were used, and which standardized test/s were taken. In this study, the identification process used in GT programs in Virginia to ascertain favorable practices to achieve parity in minority representation was researched. This updated research study was as close as possible to the Palmer (2009) study. There was an increase for all three chosen racial groups since 2009. The increase could only be one standardized test. All other results were inconclusive. / Doctor of Philosophy / This study on the identification methods used for a student's admission into Gifted and Talented (GT) programs was conducted to see if the methods used to qualify them for services had anything to do with the underrepresentation of Black, Hispanic, and two or more-race students (Non-Hispanic). There is a problem with the overrepresentation of Whites and Asians and an underrepresentation of these minority races in GT education and it needs to end. There are GT students that require GT programs to enrich or advance these students learning. The school divisions with equity for these races were studied to see what they were doing right to achieve this goal. Researched were the seven multiple criteria used to identify GT students, what area of giftedness they were placed in, and the standardized test taken. These measures were checked for similarities in the school divisions in Virginia that may give us information on what made them equitable. The results included 28 school divisions with equity for Blacks and Hispanics and 42 for two or more- race students (NH). There are still an abundance of Black and Hispanic students not qualifying for GT services. Two or more-race students have equity now. None of the criteria could be attributed to this underrepresentation.

What Influences Qualified Women Administrators in Virginia to remain in Division Level Positions while others Pursue the Position of Superintendent? – A Qualitative Study

In education, women administrators are underrepresented in leadership positions, especially as superintendent. The study examined the following: characteristics and experiences of women superintendents to those of women administrators who aspire to be superintendent and to those women who have decided not to pursue the superintendency; the factors influencing women administrators' decisions to pursue or not pursue the position of superintendent; and the impact of identified factors on the decisions made by study participants. This qualitative multiple-subject study with an interview protocol was designed to consider the historical perspective of women in education, characteristics of women administrators, and a feminist poststructuralist framework; it included the identification of internal and external barriers and criteria for enhancing the advancement of women administrators. The study addressed the following research questions: 1. How do the experiences and characteristics of acting women superintendents compare to those of women aspiring to the superintendency and to those of women administrators who choose not to seek the position of superintendent? 2. What factors influence women administrators' decisions to pursue or not pursue the position of superintendent? The seven findings suggested that 1) educational leaders influenced decisions to become administrators; 2) style of leadership, method of conflict resolution, and decision-making practice is collaborative; 3) interpersonal skills, good communication, and approachability are (p.204-205) skills required for the superintendency; 4) the decision to pursue the superintendency is influenced by a number of factors, including role models, mentors, and the intensity of the position; 5) balancing a career with family responsibilities is potential barriers for women seeking the superintendency; 6) negative perceptions of female leaders were potential barriers for women administrators seeking and obtaining the position of superintendent; 7) individual school boards and communities influence how women and men are viewed as leaders and whether or not women superintendents are perceived differently. This study has identified implications for future studies and for advancing the careers of women administrators by eliminating barriers, challenges and negative perceptions regarding their pursuit of the position of superintendent. / EDD / Women educators are traditionally underrepresented in leadership positions, especially the position of the superintendent. This study examined the characteristics and experiences of women educators in three categories: those who are superintendents, those who aspire to be superintendents, and those who have decided not to pursue the superintendency. Further, the study examined the factors which influenced the women’s decisions and identified their impact upon the decisions. The qualitative study employed an interview protocol to determine the impact of historical factors, personal characteristics, and a feminist perspective to identify internal and external barriers to advancement, as well as criteria enhancing advancement. Research addressed these questions: 1. How do the experiences and characteristics of acting women superintendents compare to those of women aspiring to the superintendence and to those of women administrators who choose not to seek the position of superintendent? 2. What factors influence women administrators’ decisions to pursue or not pursue the position of superintendent? Findings included the following: 1) Women educators are influenced by their leaders; 2) Women’s leadership style is usually collaborative; 3) Interpersonal and communication skills foster leadership in a superintendent; 4) Several factors (role models, mentors, intensity of the work, etc.) influence the decision whether to pursue superintendency; 5) Family responsibilities often present barriers to advancement; 6) Perceptions of women can be a barrier to advancement; 7) Communities and school boards determine women’s advancement opportunities. Implications for future studies and for advancing women educators’ careers have been identified in this study.

Creating, Implementing, and Evaluating the Use of a Food Science and Technology 5E Based Curriculum Impact on Underrepresented Minority Youth Engagement in Science

Increasing underrepresented minority youth (URMY) engagement in STEM education remains at the forefront of our Nation's educational battle. The aim of this study was to create, implement, and evaluate the impact of innovative food science and technology (FST) lesson plans on URMY engagement in, and attitudes towards science, and their awareness of the field of FST. The 2011 United States census recalls that URMY make up only 13.3% of the STEM workforce. This study identifies URMY as individuals representing one or more of the following demographics: Low income, African American, Latino(a) American, and Indian American. Eight 5th-6th grade youth participated in a seven-week program, The Enliven Program (TEP), which is a STEM education program created for the purpose of this. The Enliven Program focuses on youth engagement in science learning through the implementation of a FST curriculum. The lessons delivered in TEP utilized the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) 5E instructional model as its foundation. This model focuses on five phases of student centered learning: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation. Data was collected using a fixed-mixed methods design. A qual-quan approach was employed to measure youths' positive behavioral and cognitive engagement in science learning. Measures of positive behavioral and cognitive engagement demonstrated that youth were positively behaviorally and cognitively engaged in the science learning activities. Furthermore, relationship building played an instrumental role in maintaining youth participants' positive attitudes towards and engagement in TEP activities. The results display an overall increase in youth's desire to do science and self-concept in science. / Master of Science in Life Sciences / The aim of this interdisciplinary study was to create innovative teaching methods, based on existing food science and technology (FST) curricula, with a broader goal of increasing engagement in science among underrepresented minority youth (URMY). In this study, the sample of URMY were individuals, in the 5<sup>th</sup>-6<sup>th</sup> grade, representing one or more of the following demographics: Low income, African American, Latino(a) American, American Indian. Eight youth participated in a seven-week program, The Enliven Program (TEP), a STEM education program, which focused on implementing engaging science activities, with the purpose being to examine engagement of youth in science learning. This program utilized the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS) 5E educational model as its foundation, forming each lesson using a 5E lesson plan template. This model focuses on five phases of student centered learning: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation. Each lesson focused on the implementation of FST curriculum through the use of food and culinary arts techniques. In TEP, youth also had the opportunity to interact with professionals in the field of food science and technology. Measures of positive behavioral and cognitive engagement demonstrated that youth were positively behaviorally and cognitively engaged in the science learning activities. Furthermore, building rapport and a relationship with youth as a group, and on an individual level, was essential in maintaining youth participants’ positive attitudes towards and engagement in TEP activities. Results reveal an overall increase in youth’s desire to do science and self-concept in science.

Community Colleges, Catalysts for Mobility or Engines for Inequality? Addressing Selection Bias in the Estimation of Their Effects on Educational and Occupational Outcomes

For the last 25 years, research on the effects of community colleges on baccalaureate degree attainment has concluded that community colleges drastically reduce the likelihood of attaining a bachelor's degree compared to the effects of four-year institutions on this likelihood. The thesis of this dissertation is that community colleges have been misjudged as institutions that tend to perpetuate social and economic stratification; what previous studies on the topic have found is based on systematic differences in the student populations. Community college students are consistently more at risk of failing academically than four-year students. Then, the positive impact that four-year colleges have on their students compared to the impact of two-year colleges is to a great extent due to the fact that four-year students tend to have more resources and means to handle college requirements than two-year students. The main challenges to analyze two- and four-year sector effects relies on identifying community college students who resemble four-year college students and then compare their outcomes. This dissertation expands on previous research that has only looked at the effect of community colleges on students' educational outcomes by including labor market outcomes. The analyses conducted in this study primarily relied on propensity score matching (PSM) and the Heckman two-stage estimation procedures to reduce bias in the analysis by accounting for non-random selection into the treatment. In addition, the analytic samples were disaggregated by gender and ethnicity. To estimate the effects of interest, a nationally representative sample that is longitudinal and panel in nature was used: The National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88).Results revealed that neither the two- nor the four-year sectors were able to help students with very low probabilities of graduation from a four-year college. A new financial aid approach that bridges merit-based and aid-based perspectives is proposed. Community colleges, by welcoming a greater proportion of first-time, full-time undergraduate students, many of whom are underrepresented in higher education, and by helping their students to perform similarly than four-year college students in the outcomes analyzed, are conceptualized as engines for mobility helping surpass economic and social stratification of opportunities in American society.

Influence of Talent Search Program on College Readiness and Success

Precollege programs, such as Talent Search (TS), are widely used to increase college readiness skills, particularly among underrepresented students in higher education. The college examined in this study had implemented the TS program, but little empirical evidence existed about the efficacy of the program. The purpose of this ex-post facto quantitative study was to evaluate the effect that the local TS program has had on college readiness and success as measured by incoming freshmen placement exam scores and students' first-year grade point average (FYGPA). The theoretical framework for the study was Conley's 4 dimensions of college readiness designed to help students succeed beyond high school. The research questions explored the differences in the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) reading and writing placement scores and FYGPA for TS program participants and non-TS participants. The balanced sample included all 120 local college students who had finished their freshman year. Independent sample t tests were conducted and no significant differences were found in FYGPA or COMPASS reading and writing scores based on program participation. To provide guidance to the local site administrators, the extant literature on precollege interventions and holistic approaches provided best practice recommendations for a white paper that included additional services not currently offered by the local TS program. Positive social change is supported through assuring appropriate precollege support that may lead to increased academic success for students, hence increasing the number of college graduates among this group.
