An examination of information centers in the organizational structures of a university

Atchison, Lloyd Victor 01 January 1970 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the role and locations of “magnetic centers” which evolve, or are established , form the flow of information and the lines of authority on a university campus. It is believed that the certain individuals are centers of information, “magnetic centers,” and they draw messages from other individuals at all levels in the communications network of the structure of structures of an institution. By doing this they exert influence through a filtering process of the flow of information they receive and disseminate. These magnetic connectors may or may not be recognized by other individuals within the organization. Based on the assumption that there are certain individuals who could be classified as magnetic centers the following questions were considered: (1) Are there magnetic centers in the structure or structures of a university?; (2) Are these individuals magnetic centers established because of their position or because of other characteristics held in common?; (3) Are the centers permanent in the structure? If there is more than one structure, which structure appears to be more permanent?; (4) Which structure dominates in the number of recognized magnetic centers?; (5) Do the recognized magnetic centers have common procedures for getting information?; (6) Are there magnetic centers which are not recognized by other individuals in the structure or structures? Are there ascertainable reasons for their non-recognition?

Preparation of thiochalcone from thioacetophenone

Reilly, Thomas Joseph 01 January 1957 (has links)
This thesis covers the practical research done on the condensation of thioacetophenone with benzaldehyde and the library research covers the chemistry of thioketones and the thioflavanones. Most of the thioketones have been made by dissolving a ketone in ethanol, usually absolute although 95 percent was also used, saturating the solution with anhydrous hydrogen chloride at ice temperature, then admitting hydrogen sulfide for several hours. This method was first used by Fromm and Baumann when they made thioacetophenone from acetophenone. David Shirley also gives theis process in his book “Preparation of Organic Intermediates” published by Wiley and Sons in New York. SOmetimes a metallic oxide dehydration catalyst such as alumina is used.

Identification of the products and mechanism of decomposition of thiazate

Williams, Paul Edward 01 January 1961 (has links)
This work is an additional facet of the research undertaken by Dr. Herschel Frye of the Department of Chemistry of the University of the Pacific while he was a graduate student at the University of Oregon. Frye succeeded in making an analytical reagent for zinc and other transition metals similar to dithiszone but water soluble. His approach was to to sulfonate the benzene rings thus giving water solubility because of the ionic nature of the sulfonic acid. The new reagent-tensed thiazate--was quite successful in its purpose, but the sections of the compound were somewhat different than dithizone. The purpose of this thesis is to explain the nature of the decomposition of thiazate.

3-amino-2,5-dihydroxy-5-sulfo-benzoic acid

Tomomatsu, Hideo 01 January 1960 (has links)
It seems possible that efforts to discover essential chemical differences which might exist between normal and malignant cells will eventually reveal the secret of cancer and thereby lead to new approaches to safer and more selective chemotherapy. One objective of this study is to find that part of this molecule that causes it to concentrate in the tumor and thence make a smaller size compound which has similar concentration characteristics to tumor as tetracycline. For this purpose, an attempt was made in this study to synthesize the right side ring of Chlorotetracycline, the structure of which is shown below. [see PDF]

An experimental investigation of coloring matter in Canna Indica flowers

Vogt, James Clinton 01 January 1961 (has links)
The research was carried out for the purpose of isolating and identifying the coloring matter in flowers of the canna indica (canna lily) variety. It was done by extracting the pigment from flower petals with methanol, amyl alcohol, and other solvents, and crystallizing the pigment as a salt. Physical properties such as solubility, color reactions, spectra and others were examined for this pigment. Chemical properties and degradation products were also examined in order to identify the chemical structure of the pigment.

Rates of acidic hydrolysis of triptych boroxazolidines

Stump, Ronald Keith 01 January 1963 (has links)
Upon looking at the results of calculation of the rate constants given in Table 2, there are revealed some general trends as to the influence of the substituent groups on the values of the rate constants. If the rate constants of the reaction are considered at a fixed temperature, the rates of reaction in Group I decrease as the substituent is gradually changed from methyl to isopropyl. As soon as the substituent is changed from alkyl to an ether type, the rate of cleavage increases nearer to that of the parent compound again. The rate of cleavage of the nitrogen-boron bond for the third group increases very drastically, indicating that the halogen weakens the bond.

Certain differences in academic ability and achievement between credential and other students of the 1961 graduating class at the University of the Pacific

Stutzman, Carl Raymond 01 January 1963 (has links) (PDF)
In recent years the teaching profession has gained a position of unceasing public prominence which has brought with it increasing demands of professional competence. While the competencies demanded are many in number and varied in nature, the one which. is almost always asked for is that of the ability of the teacher to handle intellectual material. One measure of this ability is the degree of success which the teacher attained in his own academic endeavors while a student in a college or university. The Problem: This study compared the intellectual ability of liberal arts teacher credential candidates with liberal arts students who did not plan on a career in teaching. The problem was to determine the difference in academic ability and achievement between credential candidates and other liberal arts students who were granted the bachelor's degree on June 11, 1961, by the University of the Pacific.

An historical study of Hesperian College, Woodland, California, from 1861 to 1896

Clover, Haworth Alfred 01 January 1960 (has links) (PDF)
Today, one hundred years after the founding of this school, records, programs, catalogues, and other data concerning the school have become scattered throughout California. Data located in historical depositories are sparse and incomplete. Much information lies in the hands of private persons not known or available to the general public. From generation to generation it becomes increasingly difficult to locate data concerning earlier generations and often the data have been unknowingly destroyed. The main purpose for this project then, is to preserve knowledge of this early California school in a single source for the reference of future historians.
